View Full Version : Virtumonde virus hijacked my computer...help!!!!
Hello, I'm very much a computer illiterate when it comes to this stuff so please be patient if you are going to try help me. I have a Dell XPS system with microsoft NT home edition operating system. The antivirus software is McAffee and I do have Spybot Search and Destroy that I run regularly. The McAffee never seems to catch anything.... Unfortunately. The Spybot S&D does and I'm happy that it fixes things but this time it won't clear this virus. It keeps reappearing and is listed as a file that can't be removed but needs a reboot to clear it. Also, after shutting down (re-booting) I've lost all icons on my desktop!! I've run the kapersky scan....(I can't get to It to send to you) and the HJT and it is added here. Please help!!!!

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.
For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.
Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.
Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.
I downloaded the ATF cleaner... it ran and cleared up a lot of space...
then I started to download Combofix But it says save to desk top and an icon will appear...
I have no Icons on my desktop... I'm working off of a internext explorer window that automatically opened up by Spybot S&D when I restarted my computer 2 days ago... I'm afraid to close anything down for fear of not being able to get back on again????
What do I do? I know that Combofix downloaded because I tried it a second time and the computer said it was already there.
I dont even have a taskbar on the bottom of the screen anymore... no start button!!

Ok... I tried to re-download combo fix then it asked if I wanted to run the file after down load...since I can't access it by Icon I said yes.
Then it started to close browser windows and I'm at a warranty disclaimer window that says it will automatically reboot to complete the removal process.
asks if I agree or not???

well It scared me when everything rebooted... but now i have Icons back... and I have a combofix log for you.
One other note... when combofix was running McAfee was alerting me that combofix was trying to change things... And then an alert from Spybot showed up: System startup user entry SpybotDeletingD7331 just an FYI?!?!

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
Expand the "Tools" menu.
Click "Resident".
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Ok I did what you said... After the Log file generated my desktop went blank.
I had no icons or task bar. I pressed Ctrl/Alt/Del to get the task manager which came up saying that the log file was still running. I clicked the new task button and everything restored itself?!?!?! was that supposed to happen???

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware

Make Internet Explorer more secure
Click Start > Run
Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
