View Full Version : Newbie - I've been hit by virtumonde
Hi,
I have managed, (I think), to get rid of the virtumonde virus which I somehow obtained - by doing various scans/removals with the "system restore" option turned off. The scans are showing no sign of virtumonde - but I am left with a problem.
I keep getting explorer.exe pop ups which are trying to make a connection to the Internet. I dare not go online as I don't know what it is trying to connect to.
Residue of the virus seems to be still there and has taken over explorer.exe ???
How do I clean up. Should I restore the PC, (seems a bit drastic).
Please help.
P.S.
What are the HJT logs everyone posts ???
Like I said, I'm a complete newbie !!!
Appologies - just read the "read me".
I will attempt to get the logs tonight. Am I still okay to use the Internet on the infected PC ???
Hi,
I thought I had managed to remove the virtumonde virus which I somehow obtained - by doing SpyBot scans/removals with the "system restore" option turned off. It's back and worse than ever...
I keep getting command prompts and explorer.exe pop ups which are trying to make a connection to the Internet. I dare not go online as I don't know what it is trying to connect to.
Residue of the virus seems to be still there and has taken over - particulary at start up ???
How do I clean up. Please please help.

Hi
Navigate into C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder and rename HijackThis.exe file -> somethingElse.exe. Post a fresh hjt log after renaming is done.
Hi.
Many many thanks for your assistance.
Renamed file as requested and and took a HJT scan again using newly named file...

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)
Hi,

Save this as
CFScript
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Hi
Soundman.exe is sound card related process. More info about it can be found here (http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/?files=SoundMan).
I've appeared to have picked up more virus'and infections :o(
Those findings are the ones we removed with ComboFix. They're in Combofix's quarantine folder and will be deleted a bit later. Other bad items are in system restore and those will also be deleted later. Other findings are false positives. :)
Disable Windows Defender's realtime protection.
Open Windows Defender
Click on
Tools
Click on
General Settings
Scroll down to
Real-time protection options
Uncheck
Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)
Click
Save
Exit the program.
Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/
Close browsers and fix checked entries.
Reboot and post a fresh hjt log. How's the system running?
How am I looking.
Performance of the PC has increased and no pop-ups appeared. I have a new Internet Explorer icon appeared - but that could be because I have created a new dial-up session from work ???
Anyway, here's the latest HJT log...

You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#firewalls) to choose one
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
Fantastic - you're a star !!!
I'm currently running AVG, SpyBot and Windows Defender. If I use all the other virus/trojan detectors you recommend, will it affect the performance of the P.C. ???
I was going to install Skype messageware which is P2P - could this potentially open up any backdoors or would the stuff you recommend protect me.
Thanks very much for your assistance again - you're far more helpful and quicker to respond than any I.T. helpdesk I've come across.
If I use all the other virus/trojan detectors you recommend, will it affect the performance of the P.C. ???
Hi
Shouldn't have negative impact. The ones on the list shouldn't interfere with your current protection set either.
I was going to install Skype messageware which is P2P - could this potentially open up any backdoors or would the stuff you recommend protect me.
P2P can cause many kind of troubles. Please see File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282) sticky.
Sorry to be a pain - can you have a quick check to make sure I'm okay.
I have done a bit of tidying up on my PC and installed the progs you suggested, (except adaware). Is there an alternative to adaware as it is huge, (20meg). If I use it, can I disable it from start up and just use it as a manual scanner as it appears to be quite resource intensive, (according to threads). Is there an alternative. Many thanks again...
Thanks for the info on Skype - it doesn't look particulary safe. I was going to use it for the webcam function to talk to my friends.

Hi
Yes, you can run Adaware manually. No need to put it in start ups :)
Thanks for the info on Skype - it doesn't look particulary safe. I was going to use it for the webcam function to talk to my friends.
Skype should be safe if you're going to use it as described. It was P2P in general that made me to post that link. :)
Anyway, let's take a look in the logs you posted. Please empty recycler bin (do this on every user accounts separately). Also, it looks like something (maybe Teatimer?) brought some entries back.
Start hjt, do a system scan, check:

Hi,
Did as you said...
I've also upgraded to AVG 8.0, (slows the machine down a bit doesn't it !!!).
Should I use TeaTimer ???

Am I looking better ???
Hi
Things are looking good now :) If you want to use TeaTimer I suggest you reinstall Spybot (first uninstall thru add/remove programs).
I haven't used AVG 8 myself so can't tell if it takes more resources than earlier AVG version.
Thanks again Blade for all your assistance and advice.
I have reinstalled AVG 8.0 and unchecked "toolbar monitor" and unchecked "link scanning" which has made things faster, (advice from AVG forums).
Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help. :)
Note:If it has been five days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread.
If it has been less than five days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or your helper a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
