First of all thank you for this website! I have learned so much about malware and how to avoid it by lurking here. But I guess it can happen to anyone...
I got this "blackbird" and it has crippled my system. It created another administrator log on, and changed or deleted vital files for me to open programs and run them. I was finally able to get hijack this to run. Here is the log. by reading it I think I need to re-load windows to make this computer truly safe. I will do that if needed but I really don't want to loose all my pictures and mp3's. I am also concerned it may spread or come back through thumb drives, or mp3 players, or an external hard drive I was going to buy in an attempt to save my files. Thank you ahead of time for your assistance.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.
For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.
Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.
Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

alright! Thank you for your time. I am running atf cleaner (already had it) and I have to right click it and click "run as" then chose to run it as my log in, but disable the check box where it says to protect my computer from whatever. Holy crap! That just took forever and it freed 824 mb!!! OK, firefox cleaned only 7,624 kb.
Ok now combofix is finally running. I had it on my computer in my documents but that copy of it was unable to run. I still have to right click and crap to run anything... I downloaded on another computer a new copy of combofix that I am running now. I put it on a thumbdrive and swapped it to my infected machine because I am afraid to let my infected machine see the internet. I was unable to complete the part about the windows recovery console. I already have that installed on that machine so I figured i'd run it without. Ok here's the log.

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/Combo-Do.gif
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Also post a new HijackThis log

Alright, got the thing with combofix to work. Had to run it twice because of an error on the first run with the CFScript. I am not sure which log I saved. Sorry. Hijack this ran much easier, I didn't have to go to safe mode this time. I noticed "winlogan.exe" is still there so I didn't mess around on the other computer. Hey, should I turn off teatimer while we do this? I have to keep clicking to accept changes. Thank you for your time.

Alright. I disabled teatimer. I got the hjt part done with no problem. I downloaded MBAM on my buddies desktop and moved it to my machine with the thumbdrive. I then installed it and needed to update it. So I turned off my modem and swapped my internet connection to my computer for the first time this week. I was still unable to update MBAM. I did pull up firefox to make sure the connection was working and it was ok. I decided to run MBAM without updating. I will now post the logs and make another post after I run my machine with the internet hooked up for a while. Thank you Sir!

OK! Now we're getting somewhere! On my log in, I can run programs like I used to. Firefox is running very smooth and quick, although for some reason IE is now my default browser. I guess the trojan changed it for me. Oh and now it wants to update windows when I turn it off. Should I let it?
Just a few issues:
1. when I open IE it is off line. I have to manually allow it to work online.
2. from the log in "Helena" IE does not show pictures. It just shows empty boxes with the little picture symbol in the corner. If I right click and and say show picture it does. But just that one, it continues to not show pics on it's own.
3. if I run it in safe mode I can see that the extra administrator log in still exists. You reckon I could just delete it?
I have it back online now so I am finally running Kaspersky and will post that log.
Big question: Do you think this machine could be trusted when we are done? I really need to pay some bills, but I have been afraid to use this machine. I can't find the windows boot disk. But I'm sure I could get one if need be.
ok kaspersky took forever and I went to bed with it running. When I got up this morning It was on the log in screen so it must have re started the computer. Can't find the log, but when I went to bed it said 60% complete, and it had found 5 viruses, 10 infected files, and 6 suspicious files. If you know where it might have saved the log I'll post it. Thanks!

Your logs are clean
1. when I open IE it is off line. I have to manually allow it to work online.
Not sure what caused this
2. from the log in "Helena" IE does not show pictures. It just shows empty boxes with the little picture symbol in the corner. If I right click and and say show picture it does. But just that one, it continues to not show pics on it's own.
Maybe your security programs are blocking this
3. if I run it in safe mode I can see that the extra administrator log in still exists. You reckon I could just delete it?
I wouldn't do this to be safe
Do you think this machine could be trusted when we are done?
100% Yes. The infection you had doesn't steal personal information.
Don't need to see the Kaspersky log
Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html) protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe) puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
* SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html) offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
Make Internet Explorer more secure
Click Start > Run
Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)
* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955)
Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Hey buddy!
I was updating windows like you said, and I have a problem. I got the new validation tool and then it told me I needed to update to service pack 3. I did not know there was a 3. So I downloaded and installed it and now my computer will not boot up. I can open it in safe mode only. Could this be caused by some value changed by that infection? Thank you again.

Please disregard my last post. I have a HP desktop with an AMD processor. There is a known issue with these and SP3, microsoft has a work-around, and it worked for me fine.
I don't know if it's because I had some malware all along or maybe from the SP3, but now I have been able to install the rollup 2 for XP media center and install media player 11! I have been trying to do that for a long time unsuccessfully. It feels good to have a machine work the way it's supposed to.
One last question and this thread can be closed. I have performed all the recommended steps in your last post (already had spywareblaster, installed ie-spyad, spywaregaurd, and about to update to the newest hosts file) I had planned to download comodo firewall. I have heard it's very good. Should I install comodo or is it now redundant?

Yes that was some bug with AMD processors, glad you got that fixed
Yes Comodo is very good, I would recommend you install that
Any other questions ?

No I can't think of anything else! You have done an excellent job! Thank you Sir for your help! Now I can get back to working on my buddy's computer. I have his computer at my house to fix some junk he picked up on the net... Then mine crapped the bed. http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=28248
Thank you Sir, you are the man!
