I get an error when trying to update. OS W98 SE. Have tried uninstalling, redownloading and reinstalling to no avail. When I get the error the entire PC freezes and I have to reboot. I have uninstalled the program for now until I can determine the cause. Setting Spybot to update automatically means that the program is unusable. Any ideas?

Not the foggiest without the error you are getting.

Have you try updating manually?

I havn't tried updating manually. As for the error- I don't know what the error is. It usually manifests itself as Spybot will be shutdown due to an illegal operation. When looking at the details only zeros are shown next to the modules that are affected and it is impossible to close the error dialog box down. A ctrl alt delete doesn't work and it is impossible to select anything.
Very strange. At the moment I am looking to reinstall 1.4.

Although it appears that some people have been able to run Spybot.1.5.2.20 on Windows 98 systems others have had troubles. It seems to me without any proof that the problem may be due to memory constraints.

If you want to return to Spybot 1.4 and do not have the installation file, you can download a copy here:
http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd14.exe
Please note that there are new detection rules that cause errors:

There were problems in the include file C:\program files\spybot-search_destroy\includes TrojanC.sbi See "includes error log" for details
To overcome those errors you can try to download the Anti rootkit plugins as outlined in post #3 (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=189174&postcount=3) in this thread:

Thanks for your comments and help. On reflection, I have attempted manual updates- I was thinking about another post which seemed to suggest that you can download a specific update to your pc first and then install it. If that is possible I haven't done that. I have been getting the freeze error even when going through the initial set up routine when installing the program. If I skip that step I can get the program to work and do a scan but I guess with suboptimal spyware data. I will persevere.
