View Full Version : Popups, Malware, Please Help!

My laptop has gone haywire lately. Endless popups, internet will black out from time to time, some sites open in IE7 that wont in Firefox, this definitely isnt normal. I've run Spybot S&D repeatedly and it doesn't find any more infections, but I still get mostly the same symptoms as before. I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2008 and have done full system scans but to no avail. I tried to get a Kaspersky scan as recommended both in normal and safe mode, but in normal mode internet explorer wont open, and in safe mode (even with networking) i couldnt get my internet connection and it couldnt diagnose it in safe mode. BUT I was able to download and get a HijackThis log. The results are posted below. Please help me out with this, I may be a "young computer technician at heart", but hardware is more so my specialty than software:red:
Please note that when I ran HJT I was in safe mode, as it wouldn't work in normal mode when I tried to run it.

Lol that simple eh? Ok i'll try it out. Since I hadn't recieved feedback in a few days I kept running scans and getting rid of stuff and just yesterday things started to work again. Even so though I wana make sure I got rid of it all, so i'll run it as carnivorous17.exe and post it up here again. Thanks for getting back to me and i'll be back with the log :laugh:

Yes your log looks pretty good.
However, let's run online scan:
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)

Savethe file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only! Keep ALL other programs closed during the scan
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Woot woot nothing detected! Although it did skip over scanning some files.. Heres the log though(had a bit of trouble getting it to actually save to the desktop for some reason, but finally got it).

Next we remove all used tools.
Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
