Hi. This is a log from my friend's computer. I was trying to clean it up when mine went down but has now been fixed (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=27991).
This computer had a list two and a half pages long the first time I scanned it with spybot. It is much better now, but still seems kind of slow, and I am having trouble updating windows. Here is th hjt log, please let me know what you think.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Not seeing a lot but the hackers are learning to hide from HJT which is why we ask for the Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) Let's remove what I see and then take a look with KOS.

1) My first suggestion is to strongly consider updating to IE7 if only for the additional Security it provides. Please do not do so until you are clean of malware:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< update the Java program, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,(Default) = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
(next toolbar is not malware, but damaged)
O2 - BHO: &Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn1\yt.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {37B85A29-692B-4205-9CAD-2626E4993404} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {FE063DB9-4EC0-403e-8DD8-394C54984B2C} - (no file)
(next toolbar is not malware, but damaged)
O3 - Toolbar: Veoh Browser Plug-in - {D0943516-5076-4020-A3B5-AEFAF26AB263} - C:\Program Files\Veoh Networks\Veoh\Plugins\reg\VeohToolbar.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BearShare <<< see this
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mllmj - C:\WINNT\system32\mllmj.dll (file missing)
(old Vundo line, let's hope that junk is gone)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart, run this online scan using [B]Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner <<< check link

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here, along with a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

PSKelley! Hello Sir! Thank you for helping me with this computer. I thought no one was going to. I did not post a kaspersky scan before because I just couldn't make it do it. I did perform the things you instructed down to the kaspersky scan in your post, but I just spent a couple hours trying to use kaspersky again to no avail. I just can't get the damn thing to work. I was only able to get it to work on my computer after Rorcharch112 helped me fix it. I can't make it work on this computer, which belongs to a friend of mine.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. We are generally quick here as most forums run three to five days, that's if you get a response at all. Don't forget about this link:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=37

What is the problem you are having with Kaspersky. We use the online scan in most repairs we do and it rarely fails? You are using Internet Explorer, it will not work on Firefox.
We will try another scan that should work.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 9:07:39 PM, on 5/19/2008

I am seeing no malware in this HJT log, can you mention any malware symptoms, how is the computer running.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply along with your comments.

Thanks

Thank you for your response Sir! I did not intend to sound like I was complaining about this forum. I love spybot and I like to lurk in the forums here and find out what's happening to people lately. I am kind of a fan of you guys...:red:

Anyway, I don't know what's up with kaspersky. I was using IE. I even went as far as allowing all the activeX controls that are normally not allowed. All that happens is it attempts to initialize and download the values, but it never does.

And that's I guess what the main concern is with this machine, curtain things don't work when they are supposed to. I also had trouble with windows update. and IE7. Overall the computer is moving slower than I believe it should. I did everything I know to do and it still didn't seem right so I assume there is something more to it. I hope I am not wasting your time. I will get malwarebytes , run it, and post the log when I get home. Thank you again for posting!

Thanks for the feedback, all programs just will not run on all machines, I guess that's the case here, let's see that MBAM reports.

From your description, you may have problems other that malware. A good place to start is to make sure no Windows files have gotten deleted or corrupted, use this tool:
http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/
see if that helps.

Have a look here to see if it helps with Windows Updates:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

If that does not resolve your issue, because updates are so important:
http://support.microsoft.com/

I see you are running an out of date version of Internet Explorer, I suggest you update to see if that corrects the IE issues:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx
That might correct your ActiveX issues also?

It is possible you may need a repair install of the Operating System or even a new Installation. Let's rule out malware fist.

Thanks...Phil

SO do you think it would be safe to try to update windows again? If so I will try to install SP3 and IE7.

Could you allow me a bit more time first, after seeing this:
C:\Program Files\MediaVideoCodec (Trojan.Fakealert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully

I want to make sure you saw this link:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344

Which may mean some Smitfraud infection is hiDDen and I would like to make sure no malware exists before SP#3 is installed.

MBAM also showed infected System Restore files (which are protected and can't be cleaned) we will clean those.

Please provide this information first:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

I'll make an effort to turn the information around to you as fast as I get it. (keep in mind I am EST)

Thanks...Phil

I forgot to mention notepad doesn't work. I have been having to use wordpad in this computer. Notepad's there, it just tells me:
"The drive or network connection that the shortcut "Notepad.lnk" refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."
It did work when I ran smitfraudfix though. The "rapport" came up in it. I will try to use that window to fix the shortcut. Thanks!

Try #326. Restore Notepad.exe Notepad is important in these fixes, let me know if that takes care of the problem.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Let me hear how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Smitfraudfix has done it's job, you may remove it from your computer.

I see references to SUPERAntiSpyware but don't see it in running Programs? If you use this as a trial and are finished with it, it does use resources. You may want to uninstall it unless you own it.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

If all goes as expected, you should be good to go, here is information to take with you.

Some good information for you:

PSKelley,

So things appear to be moving much more smoothly on this computer. Would it be ok to begin installing all the updates this thing doesn't have? Thank you for your assistance.

If you completed the instruction I posted in my last post #17, you are good to go. In your Security Center >>> Control panel, all three items should be ON and green.

If I have not done so, I also suggest you consider updating to Internet Explorer if just for the additional security it provides:
