View Full Version : Need help with Malware bug, probably others

My computer is infected with a virus. Spybot previously reported this as 'MalwareCore' '007 Spy oftware' 'CoolWWWSearch.Leftovers' 'Virtumonde'. Spybot was not able to remove MalwareCore (in use, locked, etc) - better luck with the others. Upon reboot with Spybot running before Windows, it also identifies the virus MalwareCore, but is still unable to remove it.

This infection seems to be the remnant of a much larger infection that now seems somewhat undercontrol. The most visible symptoms are:

- computer running slower

- searches in Google are redirected to 58.65.234.196 and from there routed to various marketing sites. If I try to log onto Google (I have an account) to set preferences, Google's software rejects the logon as coming from a 'robot'.

- the infection seems to have trashed ActiveX. That is, it was working fine before. It will not work at all now, despite attempts to reinstall, etc. This has created numerous other annoyances.

- I have discovered that when the computer boots, the virus creates (or adds to) the value at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir

Specifically, if the target folder does not exist, the Virus creates it. It then creates subdirectories under the target folder entitled

internet explorer (plus sub-subdirectory connection wizard)
microsoft frontpage (plus sub-subdirectories version3.0 --> sub-sub-subdirectory bin)
movie maker
msn gaming zone (plus sub-subdirectory windows)
netmeeting
outlook express
windows media player
windows nt (plus sub-subdirectories accessoriues, pinball)
xerox (plus sub-subdirectory nwwia)

All of these folders are empty (unless something was previously there) but locked - they cannot be deleted, etc.

- When I tried to log onto http://forums.spybot.info/ it said This Page Cannot be Displayed. I get the same message if I try to update WinXP at Microsoft, etc.

I am not sure what other mischief this program(s) has caused.

---------------

I installed and ran HijackThis v2.0.2. The first logfile below is the result of the run immediately after install. The second logfile below was made as the computer re-booted. Note that I had changed ProgramFilesDir in the registry from C:/2 to C:/3

Thanks for any help. In the words of Danny Glover, "I'm getting too old for this!"

If you still have problems I will do my best to help. Here is what I see:
O23 - Service: Windows Action Script - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe (file missing)
Forget the (file missing) the file is not missing, that is a glitch in HJT. I can not identify that service Windows Action Script which is running. Do you know anything about it. If not, let's proceed by trying to get some information:

1) Read the directions posted above and pinned (sticky) to the top of the forum, since it appears you have yet to do so.

2) Provide a Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) as required.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

3) Navigate to that service like this: Click Start > Run and type services.msc Scroll down to Windows Action Script and right click on it. Click Properties and provide what information you see. I want to see what KOS shows first, but we will probably be disabling and deleting this service, I am trying to find out what the trojan is and where it running from, perhaps KOS will tell us.

Thanks...Phil

Phil:

Thanks for getting back to me. Shortly after posting in this forum, I decided to rebuild the computer rather than clean it. This particular computer had gone through many software upgrades, etc - I think the original WinXP install was with reversion 1a. Even the motherboard and hard disk storage had been upgraded a couple of times.

The rebuild turned out fine - the computer is running much much faster than it did _before_ the virus attack, plus lots of other odd anomalies have gone away.

Thank you, again, for your help.
