View Full Version : Virtumonde et al -- a question or two ...

Hi,

My Acer laptop got infected with the Virtumonde program (in each of its incarnations). I tried ridding the thing using Lavasoft's Ad Aware and AVG, and your Spybot S & D. I decided to check if there was additional info about the bot. Indeed, the info said I should log into the S & D forum to find the cure.

I have so far printed out the instructions to rid myself of the blasted thing. While I was looking at all of the other postings about others' troubles, I started wondering whether re-installing MS Win on that partition, might be a better idea?

I ask this more because I have made it a point to have as little as possible on my boot partition. For instance, I keep my office suite on a different partition, and I use, yet another partition for the browser temporary files. By also having my E-Mail go to a removable drive, as well as major downloads which are first saved before being run, I end up having about five gigs of free RAM out of twenty, which I provided for the boot partition. So, for me, I would not lose that much, and, because I do have DSL, reloading a lot of the updating files should go much faster.

My question is, "Will re-installing Win (by reformatting, etc.) get rid of the pesky program? Or, can it survive even that?" I ask this to have an idea of what I can do if following your advice in ridding my computer of that program does not fully work.

BTW, Virtumonde also attached itself to Firefox. What is interesting is I think I got it by visiting a site using Opera, and, I believe Opera is not infected.

Thank you for your time and attention, in advance.

Reformatting will get rid of it

Although we can remove it without reformatting if you wish to

Let me know what you decide

Hi,

As a further thought, is it better to download and install the required tools (HJT, anti virtumonde program, etc.) as stated, by Tashi, from the Internet, or from a drive (like a USB pendrive, or CD ROM which I created) which has all the current versions?

I ask the question because as long as my computer is connected to the Internet, virtumonde continues to try to hijack me, via Firefox. Once sent to that site, a download starts almost immediately, which I do not want. When I am not connected, it tries to further infect my computer. It seems to only care about my boot partition, because AVG, Ad Aware, and Spybot S&D only have shown infections in directories in my boot partition, so my other partitions and attached other drives appear clean. So I believe it might be safer to download those programs from a disk than from the Internet. Am I correct?

Thanks, in advance.

BTW, I am using an older Thinkpad until I fix my Acer Travelmate 4220.

Hi,

First, I thank you, Rorschach112, for your fast reply to me. I believe I do understand all the instructions posted, to rid myself of virtumonde, but, I am not one hundred percent sure.

Am I correct that there are actually two programs needed to fully get rid of Virtumonde: Combofix and Vendufix? If I am not correct, then what other programs do I need to rid myself of Virtumonde? Am I also correct the main purpose for some of the other programs is more for producing a log file which can then be sent to this forum?

If I am correct, then my copying that script and having Combofix run it, is also crucial? Lastly, should I run Venufix before I run Combofix, or after I run Combofix?

Thank you, all, in advance.

VundoFix is the main tool for it, but it often can't get rid of every piece as the malware is constantly changing, that is why people need to post on this forum

Am I also correct the main purpose for some of the other programs is more for producing a log file which can then be sent to this forum?
Yes, the logs show an in depth scan of your PC, helps us remove malware

then my copying that script and having Combofix run it, is also crucial?
Running CFScripts yourself is a bad idea. These scripts are different for everyone. Doing this yourself will only make it likely that you wreck your own PC

You should only run these tools if a helper tells you to, otherwise you can destroy your PC

Do you want me to help or are you going to reformat ?

Hi Rorschach112,

I am convinced. Yes, please help. I figure, if I can get the blasted thing going well, doing it the anti-viral way, then that is better than reformatting. Reformatting would be the last option. :-(

FWIW, the script file to which I alluded is one which was stated in one of the posts in this forum. From what I read of it, it seemed more of a generic search and destroy, which could be used for others. I will defer to your wisdom.

Thank you.

It is safer this way

Few things for you, post all the logs in the one go please(may need two posts for them though)

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

CLICK HERE (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download the HijackThis Installer:

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi Rorschach112,

First, if we are going to be in touch with each other, why not call each other by our real first name? My name is Julian. I will sign off as such.

Second, since the Virtumonde seems to be interested in Firefox, as it tries to hijack that, immediately, would it be a bad idea to first uninstall both Firefox and Opera, before allowing the computer to be connected to the Internet (DSL)? I ask this also because the various programs which will report how and where Virtumonde is affecting my computer will mostly depend on IE, and, I figure it might be easier for these programs to work if they have less to check out.

I can always reinstall the two browsers after I know that my computer is clean.

What do you think.

Regards,

Julian.

Hello Julian

You can call me Mark or Scratch :)

No need to uninstall Firefox, it wont affect the scans at all if that is removed

Hi Rorschach112,

Well, I started following everything you said I should do. I had already downloaded the cleaner program, and the hijack program. So, I first ran those two with my computer literally unplugged from the modem (DSL). I figured, since I did not need to be online to run those, it did not matter.

Once the hijackthis program finished, I saved the report onto my stick drive (solid state -- Memorex two gig) as a "Notepad" doc. Then I plugged my computer into the modem and proceeded to go to Kaspersky.com. There I did everything you said, and it did everything you said it would. It checked everything used as storage which was connected to my computer, which was great. It found three (3) viri in five (5) locations. Because of the time it was taking, I walked away from the computer, to come back and read that it had finished.

That is when I had trouble. I could not access anything. I could not save the log file. In fact, even after activating the Task Manager to see what was happening, and then closing it, no refresh occurred on the computer screen. The final result was that I had to forcibly shut down my computer. Therefore, I can only include the HijackThis report.

The HijackThis report follows:

I hope this helps. What do you suggest now?

Do this

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Mark,

I was just reading the Combofix tutorial and realized that my Acer Travelmate 4220 laptop came with two aspects: one, a special partition which can be used as an emergency redo of the system, bringing it back to the original; and, two, CD ROMs which I created, as part of the request by the computer's instructions, to have that same setup on an external medium.

There are four or five CD ROMs. How should I handle this in providing what is needed?

Thanks.

Julian.

Just run ComboFix and leave the recovery console step

Hi Mark,

I followed what you suggested, but, I first updated my antivirus an antispyware programs I have, on my ACER, and then ran ATF-Cleaner, to be sure I have things okay. Next, I ran Combofix. When it finished, I saved the report as prearranged with you. Of course I saved it to my stick drive so I could easily send you the results while using my IBM Thinkpad (old model, but, still good enough for XP pro).

It was nice watching a program run well, as Combofix did. It was upsetting that after I saved the report, I was not able to log off my system nor shut down by any other way except forcibly.

The following is the report created from Combofix:

Hello

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bcwhxgfs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpnevents.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\vpnva.sys

Folder::
C:\FOUND.003

Registry::
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks]
"{4F2194FF-4E9C-4948-A5FB-E5D7A05AAB9E}"=-
Driver::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/Combo-Do.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Reboot and post a new HIjackThis log

I do hope this helps straighten things out.

FWIW, why have you not asked me to run Vundufix?

I await your next set of instructions.

BTW, this time I was able to shut my computer via the "normal" manner, instead of forcibly. :-)

Kind regards,

Julian.

Your logs are clean

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html) protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe) puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)

* SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html) offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

Click Start > Run
Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955)

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Hi Mark,

I will, of course, do as you suggest, and uninstall Combofix. Why is it necessary to uninstall it?

After reading the rest of your post, I realized and recognized a few things:

One, I do use a set of good anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, and I constantly do update them. I use whichever versions allow me the greatest protection and scanning. I will add additional ones, as ones you suggest.

Two, I do know I must delete older versions of programs and packages I have: JAVA is one, Adobe Acrobat is two, and Spybot S&D is three. Of what I am not certain is the fact that there is more than one place where JAVA is stored on my harddisk (the same with Adobe Acrobat/Reader), and which was placed there when I installed JAVA. I believe the last place was a subdirectory of "Sun" (A little different with the Adobe Acrobat/Reader.). How do I know what to delete and what not to delete, other than deleting those files which I definitely know are old? What if the files state the same dating, but just a slight difference in version number, as SB S&D version 1.5 and SB S&D version 1.5.2. Is it safe to remove one of them?

Three, I have had the unfortunate experience of at least two anti programs tying up my computer's resources to the extent to make it run slowly and not be able to easily access the Internet. This is why I chose not to use the "Tea Timer" of Spybot, and why I chose not to use Antivir. Will any of the programs/packages you are suggesting do likewise?

Four, just for info sake, Virtumonde had also attached itself to Firefox, so that is not much safer than IE. Also, because so many anti-virus and anti-spyware programs will only allow their internal updater when using IE, it forces me to have IE as my computer's default browser. I refuse to keep switching back and forth in stating one browser is my default at one time and then needing to state a different one is my default, at another time, all because a program or a site refuses to work with a different browser. I do not like this, but, that is how the MS Win environment is set up. For the record, I not only use Firefox as well as IE, I also use Opera.

Five, this is OT. I have been using Ad-Aware SE Personal, updating it by downloading and copying the definitions from the Lavasoft site. I use that version of Ad-Aware because I can completely configure it, whereas, I cannot do that with 2007 Free nor with 2008 Free. Recently (past few weeks) when I run Ad-Aware, it does fine, and suddenly not only stops but becomes a non-responding program which I have to forcibly (via Task Manager) end. This happens at varying stages in its scanning. I posted this on the Lavasoft Support Forum, but have not been answered yet by anyone there, as what to do. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your time, attention, and help.

Kind regards,

Julian.

ComboFix is dangerous and it isn't something you should use, so you need to uninstall it

Yes it is safe to uninstall those, you should remove all old versions of java

Will any of the programs/packages you are suggesting do likewise?
Having TeaTimer and not Avira running is dangerous. They shouldn't cause problems

Four, just for info sake, Virtumonde had also attached itself to Firefox, so that is not much safer than IE
Firefox is safer than IE. If you download cracks and keygens it doesn't what programs you are using, you will get infected

I posted this on the Lavasoft Support Forum, but have not been answered yet by anyone there, as what to do. Any suggestions?
No. Make sure all programs are closed when running scans

Anything else ?

Hi Mark,

First, my ACER is running smoothly now. Thank you, ever so much. I set a Restore point soon after I got the "green light" from you as to my system being clean. I first cleaned out programs and some other files, then I did a Defrag. After this, I created the System Restore Point.

Second, when I had Antivir installed, it was so actively checking the input port from the Internet that ZoneAlarm was constantly active and my system was slightly slowing down due to Antivir asserting itself all the time. AVG also monitors the I/N and E-Mail, etc., but does it passively -- only when I am actually browsing or working with E-Mail; thus, everything runs normal speed. Again the program is, "Antivir"; it is NOT, "Avira."

Third, when I did run Tea Timer, I was constantly interrupted by requests and warnings, many of which turned out to be not just innocent things but things which might be actually needed by my computer system. It could accidentally become too tempting to delete something, in a warning, which could turn out to be necessary for something else in the system. Without Tea Timer, the only time SB S&D tells me of something bad, is if I either run a scan, or something is flagged.

Fourth, I will again try to make sure all programs are closed when scanning. Just maybe that is the problem with Ad-Aware SE? Thanks for the reminder.

It has been a pleasure knowing you.

Regards,

Julian.
