I tried looking for this on google but could not find any hints of what this problem could be.

Since upgrading to the newest Spybot like 2 months ago, and it currently is updated with the latest updates - I have been experiencing a strange occurrence. Everytime I boot up my PC (Win XP SP2), ever since the last big upgrade/update, it now keeps opening my C:\Program Files\Spybot window in the taskbar.

What is causing this and how do I stop it from constantly loading that directory window?

Thanks for any help.

Did you rename the default installation path from the following to something else?
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
Where do you have Spybot installed?

Ah that might explain it. I did install the new one in \Spybot - Search & Destroy
but I guess I have the old one in \Spybot (ie the directory that is on the taskbar at boot).

I guess I assumed the new install would just overwrite the old one.

Should I uninstall both and reinstall the new one or is it safe to just use the uninstaller file in the \Spybot directory?

Thanks again.

jim0808:

You can try the uninstaller in the C:\Program Files\Spybot directory but it is possible that it will take pieces of the new installation with it; just like the new installation is affecting the old by loading the C:\Program Files\Spybot directory.

If that happens:
Uninstall both.
Delete both of the following directories:
C:\Program Files\Spybot
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
Run this very small fix (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/remove-spybotsd-settings.reg) located in the following FAQ to clean up registry entries:
