Hi, Thanks in advance for your help!
My daughter's laptop has become infected. I don't know what she was doing when it started. I reinstalled operating system about 3 weeks ago due to problems. I know enough to be dangerous so I attempted to remove viruses before getting stuck and coming here. I'll provide a brief background.
- Symantec Anti-Virus and firewall found
Trojan.LowZones associated with randomly named exe files
Downloader.MisLeadApp associated with QdrModule16.exe
After multiple attemps with Symantec in normal and safe modes I was unable to remove virus. I saw that a randomly named dll was being loaded in registry Run area and attempted to delete key & file but it would recreate.

- I downloaded Combofix and ran. It appeared to get rid of Qdrmodule but still had problems with random dll virus. Symantec did not find any more viruses except files in Combofix quarantine - QooBox?

- I downloaded Sybot and ran. It found many tracking cookies and Virtumonde. When clicking "fix" it went blank screen while trying to fix Virtumonde. Long story from here.. but net is turned of wireless access to home lan, I went to Safe Mode on her username (AC) and ran Spybot - found Virtumonde. Fix w/ reboot and it appeared to remove it. I restarted in Safe mode under Administrator and it did not find Virtumonde. I rebooted normally and Spybot started automatically - it ran and did not find anything.
I opened Internet Explorer and Bam! - back to beginning. Random open windows, warnings that system is infected and to download something, etc. I also found entries in registry to load randomly named dlls again.

- I found this website and followed instructions. I had some problems running kaspersky as I couldn't click links in note without opening other web browers and popups. I was able to type in url and get to site to run. Ditto with hijackthis. Below are logs -

I really need help on this one! Thanks again.

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking Forums.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

Please delete the version of ComboFix.exe you downloaded and ran earlier.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Be sure to save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Step # 2 Download CCleaner

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the ccsetup.exe file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location.
Under Install Options, choose all the default settings except I would recommend that you unclick/untick install the Yahoo! Toolbar, unless you want it. You can also Uncheck the 'Automatically check for updates' box.
Click Install then finish to complete installation.

Step # 3 Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner

Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleaning the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log
CCLeaner Install List

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

I have a "toshiba recovery and applications" cd which will reload the factory image on the hard disk. It's not a standard XP CD and doesn't have an i386 directory. I searched for a winnt32.exe on the disk and could not find that either. I do have a Win XP corp edition CD from another system. Can I use that to install Windows Recovery Console? even if it has different product key than toshiba laptop?

Or, for that matter, if I can't load Recovery console, I am OK w/ risk of losing restore point and having to reload. I haven't good experience with it in the past anyway!

Let's try installing the Recovery Console this way:

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/KB310994.gif

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/rc1.gif

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

In your next post/reply, post the following:

1. The ComboFix Log (C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. CCleaner's Install List (from Steps 2-3 of my previous post to you)

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

First of all, sorry for not reading further on combofix instructions on installing Recovery Console - if I had I would have seen info in your last post and not wasted your time!
Looking at logs, I see that a uTorrent directory was created - which probably explains how this got infected - a discussion for my daughter. I checked directory and it's empty now and not listed in installed programs.

A couple other items
I see all the randomly named dlls, ini files in logs but not the 11870.exe which kaspersky found. I had found that file previously and wondered if it was a virus and scanned it with Symantec and it didn't detect anything. It is possible it blinded Symantec or is Symantec just not very good? (btw -Symantec ran on it's scheduled full scan overnight and didn't find anything last night either...)
The firewall occasionally blocks something. (I shut down both before running combofix.)

When I use explorer many additional sites spawning when openning url. I got to this forum OK but when I logged in - the web browser shut down. First time for that. I was able to log in OK next time.

It is possible it blinded Symantec or is Symantec just not very good?

It's possible that the file isn't/wasn't in Symantec's database when you did the scan, so it couldn't find it.

Step # 1: Run CFScript

Please delete the version of ComboFix you have on your computer, I need you to download the latest version of ComboFix by sUBs here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Then, please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

KILLALL::

File::

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gmslqdag.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\icdkjfas.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fjgmvnwf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwbditmh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hxjpvlxp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ljJCvSJy.dll

Folder::

C:\Program Files\uTorrent

Registry::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{B1A64443-6FCA-41CE-8D51-5F8991257555}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{eda6fbbe-8bd9-4a5b-964d-157e1b63675d}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"b4bda793"=-
"BMb78e940f"=-
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks]
"{B1A64443-6FCA-41CE-8D51-5F8991257555}"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ljJCvSJy]

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/CFScript.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log that appears after Step 1 has been completed.
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after Step 1 has been completed.

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

I noticed some new random dlls were created. If opening brower is related to virus - I have additional laptop next to this one and could transfer logs/files on usb drive to clean laptop for posting so I don't have to open explorer brower on infected laptop. Thanks for your help.

If opening brower is related to virus - I have additional laptop next to this one and could transfer logs/files on usb drive to clean laptop for posting so I don't have to open explorer brower on infected laptop.

That's a good idea. :) Let's keep your infected laptop offline as much as possible. You can use your clean laptop to download any tools I ask you to download and transfer them over to the infected laptop to be run. And then transfer the resulting logs back over to your clean laptop to be posted here.

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2 Run CCleaner

CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!

Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:

Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
Clean all entries in the System section
Clean all entries in the Advanced section
Clean any others that you choose

In the Applications Tab:

Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
Clean any others that you choose

Click the Run Cleaner button.
A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
Click exit when done.
If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

Step # 3: Run CFScript

Please delete the version of ComboFix you have on your computer, I need you to download the latest version of ComboFix by sUBs here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Also delete the CFScript.txt from your Desktop, you will be creating and running a new one.

Then, please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

KILLALL::

File::

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lalcnblq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rkokdrtd.dll

Registry::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{cb1eeed4-333c-4bda-9a01-9fa279af09e2}]

Step # 4: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 5 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

You'll need to be online on the infected laptop when downloading any updates for MalwareBytes'. Once (if any) are found and installed, you can disconnect the infected laptop from the Net and run the scan.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:

Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
Click Open.

In your next post, I need to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log that appears after Step 3 has been completed.
2. MalwareBytes' Log
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after ComboFix and MalwareBytes' have been run.

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

I completed all steps without using internet explorer on infected laptop. The internet explorer was opened from previous activity. I closed and did simple check in system32 directory and no additional randomly named dlls had been created. I did not turn off wireless adaptor so laptop was able to reach internet so Malware was able to update w/o problems. Last time, it seemed I had it licked until I opened Windows Explorer so I guessing/hoping being online w/o Windows Explorer isn't a problem. Symantec firewall was active except when running combofix. No firewall notifications popped up except for installation of Java and Malware. A couple items
- When Combofix rebooted and was creating log, A "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." box popped up. ComboFix completed normally and created text log. I wasn't sure what would close if clicking send/don't send so I just left the box open. I complete all steps and box is still sitting open on desktop.
- The 11870.exe file Kaspersky indicated as a virus is still on system
Infected Object Name / Virus Name / Last Action
C:\Documents and Settings\AC\Application Data\Microsoft\dtsc\11870.exe Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.plz skipped
- I just put laptop into Standby when done.

When Combofix rebooted and was creating log, A "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." box popped up. ComboFix completed normally and created text log. I wasn't sure what would close if clicking send/don't send so I just left the box open. I complete all steps and box is still sitting open on desktop.

Go ahead and click don't send and then reboot your laptop.

The 11870.exe file Kaspersky indicated as a virus is still on system
Infected Object Name / Virus Name / Last Action
C:\Documents and Settings\AC\Application Data\Microsoft\dtsc\11870.exe Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.plz skipped

We'll get rid of the file in this part of the fix. :)

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Be sure to re-hide your files once you are finished cleaning your computer.

Step # 1: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the file I have marked in Red(if found):

C:\Documents and Settings\AC\Application Data\Microsoft\dtsc\11870.exe

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html)

You must be using Internet Explorer, Kaspersky does not work with Firefox

Click Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:

Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:

Select My Computer

The program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

I deleted 11870.exe without problems. There was only one other file in directory dtsc - a file named "ID". Should I delete that file and/or directory dtsc?

Laptop booted up without problems. I opened web browser and it appears to be working normally. No spawned web paged, Google worked quickly (it had been abnormally slow).

I noticed kaspersky found a virus in Symantec Antivirus directory - I have not reloaded Symantec Antivirus scanner though the Symantec Firewall is still running. Is it possible the virus in the Symatec directory was preventing Symantec antivirus from finding the virus elsewhere?

Laptop seems to be operating normally now, though I have not re-enabled Symantec Antivirus.

On second look, I see that Kaspersky found the virus in Recycle directory? I misread log. So perhaps we are about done!

Yes, we are almost done. :)

I deleted 11870.exe without problems. There was only one other file in directory dtsc - a file named "ID". Should I delete that file and/or directory dtsc?

Let's not delete the file just yet, till we know more about it. Do you know the extension (.exe, .txt, .bat, etc) of the "ID" file? If it doesn't show you when you view the file in Windows Explorer, you can right-click on the file and choose Properties and it should tell you the extension of the file.

As for the file that Kaspersky found, just empty your Recycle Bin and that'll take care of the file and you can renable Symantec now.

Thanks
The file in dtsc is just named "ID" without an extension. Under properties it list Type of file as "File" and Descrition as "ID". It was created 5/24 which was same date as problems and the 11870 file. Size 128bytes, size on disk . For the heck of it I scanned that file with Malware and Symantec and nothing. I searched web on the directory dtsc and found many hits on virus problems with same symptoms as mine. One talked of Symantec being unable to update due to this virus. I was unable to find a "legitimate" reference to the directory.

I re-enabled Symantec Anti-Virus and updated. I rebooted and a notification that Microsoft updates were ready to be installed popped up on shutdown. I shutdown without updating. I have automatic download of updates set to download but ask before updating. After rebooting, I checked history logs of Symantec. In Risk History is showed it cleaned a Trojan.LowZones with time stamp of when I enabled Symantec before updating and rebooting. The Filename and Original location fields were blank. Action Taken was "the file was repair successfully". The time stamp was 7:00:44.
On Scan history - it showed a startup scan started at 7:00:40 and ended at 7:01:42 - but indicated 0 infections found.
After this the event log shows Symantec updating and then restarting after reboot without any indications of problems.
So - I don't know if it's real or if something is hiding. I don't have any indications of problems with computer - it seems to be running fine.

I went ahead and ran a Kaspersky online scan and hijack log as I understand these make no changes to system. Kaspersky found something but it appears it's in a Restore point?
two additional questions
- what would be your recommendation for Microsoft update settings for my daughters laptop. She's away at college most of the time. Should I let Microsoft udpate automatically?

- This laptop was hopelessly messed up about 1 month ago. It was infected with many things and by the time I was done hacking around the system was unstable. I copied all her files to CDs and then reloaded the system. I think the way this may had become reinfected was my daughter said she recently reloaded some of her files from those CDs. The question - is there a safe way to scan the CDs before importing any more of the files? Does copying infected files put you at risk or do they have to be executed.

Thanks again for all your help!

My research of this directory has shown this as well. I don't see any problems with deleting the dtsc directory. I would keep it in the Recycle Bin just in case you need to restore the folder. If everything is fine with your laptop after a day or so, you can empty the Recycle Bin and get rid of the folder.

what would be your recommendation for Microsoft update settings for my daughters laptop. She's away at college most of the time. Should I let Microsoft udpate automatically?

I would set it so Windows updates automatically. Microsoft releases its updates/patches the second Tuesday of every month, so unless you or your daughter are free that day to do updates, I would set the computer to automatically download and install updates so you don't have to worry about if you missed an update or not.

This laptop was hopelessly messed up about 1 month ago.

Copying infected files doesn't/shouldn't put you at risk, but as soon as they are executed, especially .exe files then that's when you are in trouble.

As for scanning the CD, you should be able to use MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware to scan it. To do that, put the CD in the CD-Rom Drive, then start up MalwareBytes'. After MalwareBytes' has been updated, instead of performing a quick scan, you'll want to perform a full scan. Once full scan is selected, click Scan and a new window will open up, select the drive that corresponds to your CD-ROM drive (you can unselect the C: drive as well, so that it only scans the CD-ROM drive if you wish) and click OK to begin the scan.

I went ahead and ran a Kaspersky online scan and hijack log as I understand these make no changes to system. Kaspersky found something but it appears it's in a Restore point?

Kaspersky found an infected System Restore point. It is harmless where it is, but I'll show you how to clear it out and set a new clean one in this post.

As for the Trojan.Lowzones, Symantec says that "Symantec antivirus programs use Trojan.LowZones as a generic detection when detecting many individual but varied Trojan horse programs that lower the Internet Explorer security zone settings, and for which specific definitions have not been created. In these cases, a generic detection is used because it protects against many Trojans that share similar characteristics." (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-032611-4546-99&tabid=2)

Since its a generic detection, its possible it wasn't detected by the other tools I had you run. Everything should be fine, since Symantec got it and the next scan it didn't came back and it showed zero infections.

Otherwise everything else looks good in your latest HiJackThis Log and you are good to go. :)

You can remove ComboFix from your computer, to do so do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
