I installed Spybot on my laptop. Have had it on my old Win98se for several years. Now I have XP . I ran the program and got a list of things to fix so I told the software to fix them. then I started to get a list of the different items and didnt know whether or not to allow or deny but could not get out of teh program without making a choice so I allowed them. Anyhow, I panicked and decided to uninstall Spybot and reinstall it but when I tried to do this I got a warning not to but instead to run the recovery program. To make a long story short, the whole install thing came up again but the download never happened and now i have a "download" box on my screen which can not be deleted. It is saying it is in the process of downloading something but nothing is happening. When i went through the install wizard process again, thinking that might fix things, I kept getting the errror message "error sending request. Server name or address could not be relsolved"that was hours ago. It is still there. When I right click on it, it gives the istool.org address, whatever that is. Also, according to the "remove/change programs" list, Spybot has disappeared off that list but the program remains on the computer.Short of uninstalling and reinstalling xp, I cant think of another thing to do. Am just not that computer savvy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

jimsbairn:

re "error sending request. Server name or address could not be relsolved".

A solution to this problem that has worked in the past is to skip doing updates during the installation and update after the installation.

Please read my suggestion in post #5 (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=166620&postcount=5) of this thread:

Thank you for your help! I managed to delete that uncloseable download box after unchecking the 'download immediately" box as you suggested. However the problem goes on. When I tried to update, I could only get so far before getting a set-up message saying that "installation/removal of a previous program was not completed. You will need to restart your computer to complete that installation. After restarting, run 'set-up' again to complete the installation".
Problem is, having restarted my computer several times and running set up again, I get to the same message so am just going around in circles.
So, I thought I would just search for spybot files and send them all to 'trash', but am not allowed to do that because I am told that some other program is using them. So I restored them all but am at a dead end and the program can not be run or removed. Any further suggestions before I hurl this lap top against the wall??

Hello,

Before you run your first scan you need to install the detection updates first.

For more information on updating please have a look at this link on our website:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/update.html
You can also download the updates manually:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Here is the direct download link (http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe).
Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.

OK, Sandra. Firstly, I have no recollection of sending a PM. I thought I just posted on the forum. But to the problem itself, it just won't go away! I downloaded the file from the link you gave me but I cant run the update file because according to the box, the download never completes. the little files were flying for over an hour. I cant open S & D unless I go into program files. Once in there if I hit the Update button ( either one) I get this: "the external update application has been corrupted. Make sure you download the "Updater" file to replace it."
Where do I find that if I cant get into the program?
Another error message somewhere alongthe line ( I am losing track!) said "Cannot find file 'C\{ProgramFile\SpybotS_D\Updates\downloads.ini. System cannot find path specified.'
Discouraged!

Hello,

We recommend a fresh install of Spybot - Search & Destroy.

Please uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy according to the following link:

Then make a fresh install of Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.
