Hello, and thank you upfront for whatever help you can provide.

I downloaded Spybot SD following a link from Kim Kommando's site. Scanned my PC and found I had all sorts of problems. Tried fixing it still using Spybot, and after scanning again report still said I had virtumonde. Finally, I was able to remove it using Spyware Dr. Now when I scan PC with either Spybot or Spyware Dr., reports comes back clean.

My 2 issues are:

1) When I boot up my PC two windows appear: One with some "Windows XP Version" information, and the other is of "My Computer". Can you please help me get rid of them? I guess they are annoying more than anything else!

2) When I scan with Kaspersky report says 14 viruses were found, 23 infected objects, and 1 suspicious one. (Herewith below the HJT and Kaspersky logs FYI.) Given that Spybot and Spyware Dr. say I am clean, is Kaspersky giving false positives, or am I really still infected?

Also FYI, I have a firewal and antivirus installed (Zone Alarm and Avast).

Thanks,
Ferd

Hi

Uninstall Spybot for now to make sure TeaTimer won't interfere fixing. You may reinstall it after system is clean :)

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:

Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Hi

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Hi,
Below please find both logs.
I ran Combofix. After the log file was created and saved, my screen went to the desktop, except that there were no icons, and it just sat there. After some 30 minutes I decided to look at processes inside task manager but there were no findstr, find, sed or swreg. I then decided to restart my computer manually with Shutdown/Restart within Task Manager. When it rebooted the "Windows XP Version" window appeared like it has since I got infected, but the "My Computer" window no longer appeared. I think that's about it. What next?
Thank you again for all the help you are providing.

Hi

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Upload following file to http://virusscan.jotti.org or http://www.virustotal.com and post back the results:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\klif.sys

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldjcqisx.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\qvubiveh.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{1F89D9B1-2F9B-196B-AF23-0989A0135537}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"wubygugx"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run]
"YsGeHsxyxX"=-

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Run Kaspersky online scanner and post back its report & a fresh hjt log (without forgetting above meantioned ComboFix resultant log).

Hi
Following is everything you asked for. I know we are still in the process of fixing my PC, but have noticed that when I start running ComboFix a message appears saying: "WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED". I thought I did (or at least I used to and would manually set recovery check points every once in a while. Does this now means system recoveries also got screwed up?
Thank you!

Hi

You probably mean system restore points with recovery check points? :) Recovery console (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_console) is not same thing as system restore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Restore).

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Delete items in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder

Delete following files:
C:\Gen\Audio Video\Chirris.exe
C:\Gen\Audio Video\impac.exe
K:\Uninstalled\DVD Copies\DivX Players\Nostra1.6.exe
K:\Uninstalled\DVD Copies\DVDx\Version 2.0\DivX Codec\DivXPro502GAINBundle.exe

Delete mail messages found by Kaspersky scanner (thru Outlook by looking for messages with same date as those in report)

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Re-run Kaspersky scanner and post back its report & a fresh hjt. How's the system running now?

Blade, you rock!

My PC is behaving better than it had in a looong time! Heck, even the "Windows Version" window that used to pop up at start-up is gone! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I went ahead and did everything you mention, and then I ran another scan with kaspersky. The report came back with a number of problems in the Recycle Bin, which made me realize I had not emptied it out after deleting the stuff you told me to. So I emptied the bin, and ran ATF Cleaner just to make sure there was nothing left there, and then ran another scan with kaspersky. Below is the log for this last scan, as well as the one for hjt.

And now I would like to ask you a few questions, if I may:
* In this last kaspersky log it is reported that there are somethings on K:\System Volume Information\_restore... How do I get rid of them?
* In the Control Panel, under Add or Remove Programs the following appear: HijackThis 2.0.2, Kaspersky Online Scanner, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Given that I uninstalled Combofix, should I also uninstall these 3?
* Should I go ahead an re-install Spybot SD now? I am guessing it is one of the best protection SW out there. What do you suggest?
* Once my PC is completely clean, would it make sense for me to install and run one of those registry cleaning/fixing sw's, to bring my PC back to its "new" level? If so, which one would you recommend? (Over the years there has been many programs installed and un-installed, which makes me wonder how much faster it could go if there were no problems there. Actaully, is there any other thing I could do to bring my PC to a peak performance level).
* And finally, where can I make a donation. Your help has been outstanding! :angel:

Hi

* In this last kaspersky log it is reported that there are somethings on K:\System Volume Information\_restore... How do I get rid of them?
That's probably your external hard drive or other external storage. You should make system restore reset also for that.

* In the Control Panel, under Add or Remove Programs the following appear: *HijackThis 2.0.2*, *Kaspersky Online Scanner*, and *Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware*. Given that I uninstalled Combofix, should I also uninstall these 3?
You won't need HijackThis in normal conditions but I recommend keeping at least Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It's powerful malware remover which you could run once or twice a month for example.

* Should I go ahead an re-install Spybot SD now? I am guessing it is one of the best protection SW out there. What do you suggest?
Yes, Spybot can be reinstalled now. More hints at the end of this post.

I don't personally recommend registry cleaners. Risks are quite high to get things messed up so badly that results could be worse than in the beginning before registry cleaner run.

* And finally, where can I make a donation.
Instructions for donation making can be found here (http://www.spybot.info/en/donate/index.html). Thank you :)

Then to those other hints..

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :cool:

Hi,

You asked to let you know how things are going with my system. What can I say? It's great! Trouble free!! Like I said before, you rock!!!:laugh:

I have now also gone ahead and followed your tips/recommendations:

- Java: Done

- Windows updates: Done

- IE more secure: Done (even though I use FireFox by default, when it doesn't work with some websites I do sometimes use IE)

- Comodo BOCLEAN: Installed it and running. BTW, since I am not an expert at this I have not changed anything in its configuring window, and don't know if I should.

- SpywareBlaster: Downloaded it but have not yet installed it. The reason being I wanted to ask you a basic question before doing so: Is it not a bit of overkill? I mean, I already have installed & running Avast Antivirus, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Comodo BOClean, and Spyware Dr. Since I do not want to get infected again, I will follow your recommendation, but just wanted to check with you first.

- IESpyad: Have not done it because, again, I seldom, use IE and it very clearly states that this only works with IE. Should I go ahead and install anyway?

- Hosts file: Done

At this point in time I am so freaked out that I will go ahead and do whatever it takes to not fall back onto the infected road!

Thanks a ton!

Glad to hear that system is running well :)

- Comodo BOCLEAN: Installed it and running. BTW, since I am not an expert at this I have not changed anything in its configuring window, and don't know if I should.
Default settings are ok.

Basically SpywareBlaster is kind of alternative for mvps hosts file. Since you had installed it I think you'll be fine without SpywareBlaster too :)

- IESpyad: Have not done it because, again, I seldom, use IE and it very clearly states that this only works with IE. Should I go ahead and install anyway?
If you don't use IE then it's not necessary. For FireFox I recommend Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/installation) and NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/722)

Hello,

Have installed both recommended add-ons. I keep getting windows popping up advising me of errors on web pages trying to be loaded, but I guess this is part of the many new security installations we have put in place. Does this sound normal to you, or do you think it would be convenient for me to write down the details and inform you?

I have not had time to run a final kaspersky & hjt just to make sure I am 100% clean now, but I am assuming I should be OK.

Thanks again

Hi

If you have installed NoScript and try to use Firefox for browsing you have to enable jscript running access from NoScript (should be located in lower right corner).

Hello,
I am not able to locate jscript running access on the menu from NoScript's "S" located in lower right corner. The good news is that as I tell NoScript which sites to trust browsing becomes easier & faster.
My PC is a bit slow (truth be told, I am not sure it is slower than before infection), but I figured it is just due to its age: 4 or 5 years now.
I guess we are all set here. Once again, thank you very much for your help and support.

Yes, you won't find jscript setting in NoScript I meant that method you already tried - telling NoScript which sites are trusted ones.
