• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

Not sure if you can help with this..

Over the last few days I have been installing and uninstalling several apps:
Snoopfree, Quicktime for update and cleaned my registry with CCleaner and JV16

Today, normal bootup but trying to get to progs via START button results in freeze of that window and dropdown list.

I can access apps via desktop icons and taskbar icons but windows will appear behind the frozen ones.

The reason I'm here is that SpyBot seems to be the only app which will not launch from either the teatimer icon on the task bar or via .exe in Prgram files.

I have reinstalled with no success.

I suspect I have made some registry voodoo
Unfortunately I have not got a sys restore point or a good backup of the recent changes as I used both CCleaner and Reg clean Doh. IDIOT.
I got complacent.

AS an extra when I try to install Quicktime the install freezes.
Have run chkdsk and sfc with disc and no change.

Any help?
I really do not want to do a full reinstall.
I have a registry backup with ERUNT from 25-2-06 (do that every 2 weeks)

Could that help?
Thanks

I have no idea what could be causing the problem. The only thing that I can suggest is to uninstall and reinstall as follows:

Uninstall Spybot-S&D:
  • Make sure that TeaTimer is not running by checking for the TeaTimer System Tray Icon. If the icon is there:
    • Right click Spybot's TeaTimer System Tray Icon > click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident. TeaTimer should close.
  • Go to Windows > Control panel > Add or Remove Programs > Locate "Spybot – Search & Destroy 1.4" > Remove.
  • Using Windows explorer, verified that the following folder has been delete. If not, delete it:
    • C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Make sure that all the registry entries that Spybot-S&D added during installation are removed, there is a .reg file available on the safer-networking.org WEB site that can do that. See the following article:
  • Delete the Configuration.ini file.
    • The Configuration.ini file is stored in one of the following folders:
      • Windows 95 or 98:
        C:\Windows\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy
      • Windows ME:
        C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy
      • Windows NT, 2000 or XP:
        C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Delete any shortcuts to Spybot - Search & Destroy.
Reinstall Spybot-S&D 1.4:
  • Execute spybotsd14.exe.
  • Do not change the default installation path of:
    • C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy

Well, Well,
Seepless night,
GFriend furious :o

Thankyou for your help
Did uninstall SBSD as per usual

Then reinstalled registry with ERunt.
Windows working well.Reinstalled SBSD of course!

Was able to install new Quicktime with no problem

BUT: Spybot hung on Registry Back-up step with new install.

Is there a way to back up registry from normal start console?

(ps get Erunt if you dont have it)

Thanks

Skip the "Create registry backup" step and finish installing Spybot. If you still want to back up the registry after Spybot is installed, go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings > Click on the "Wizard" button at the top of the settings screen. After you "Create registry backup" click "Next" until you get to Step 7 of 7 and the click "Start using the program". Since you are already running Spybot the wizard terminates.

Thanks again

Did as you suggested, no luck, SBSD hangs in the wizard with the "create registry backup" button.

Any suggestions?

There are two files created when you do a "Create registry backup":
  • regLocal.reg
  • regUsers.reg
The directory they are created in depends on the OS you have as follows:
  • Windows 95 or 98:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Backups
  • Windows ME:
    C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Backups
  • Windows NT, 2000 or XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Backups
The two files are exports of specific registry keys as follows:
  • regLocal.reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software]
  • regUsers.reg
    [HKEY_USERS]
I don’t know why the creation of these files would hang except possibly some inconsistence in the registry itself that is causing the export to hang.

There is an alternative. You could create the same backup manually as follows:
  • Going into Run > Type regedit > OK
  • Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • Select (highlight) Software
  • In the File menu select Export.
  • When that export completes select (highlight) HKEY_USERS
  • In the File menu select Export.
Personally, I have never heard of anyone using these back-ups. Once you've run your system for any period of time they would be outdated and would probably do more harm than good to use (at least in their entirety). I would just forget it.
