Hi

Have you tried to do system restore back to point before this thing happened?

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Hi,
I've booted up in safe mode and created a new user account, I still have the same problems with the new user account when I've rebooted in normal mode :(

Hi

Let's take a look into your registry.

Do this in normal mode.

Click start -> run. Write following bolded text into the running box:
CMD /C Reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrenTVersion\Explorer" /s>"%Userprofile%\Desktop\Report.txt"

Repeat with this one:
CMD /C Reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /s>"%Userprofile%\Desktop\Report2.txt"

After that you should have two new text files on your desktop: Report.txt and Report2.txt. Please attach those two files as file attachments to your next reply.

I'm still getting the error message, it won't let me run it, error message states "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."
This is becoming frustrating!:)

Hi

Is the registry program you downloaded and installed regscrub XP? Where did you get it? I'm afraid you have to do repair installation for the system.

so do you think the best thing to do would be to get an external hardrive and try and save what we can to that and re-install windows?
can we move the files we want to keep while we run the pc in safe mode?

Hi

You could try to do repair installation first. Check here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx) for instructions :)

hi, i didn't have a master disk as it was a pakard bell and had an in-built recovery system, what I did was do a partial recovery. That seems to have done the trick. The only problem being that it has restarted my free norton(which i hate) and that i will have to go and relaod the drivers to play games! I still have all my personal files though. I downloaded it from www.download.com and I think it was Regscrub. I didn't run it, just tried to install.
Many thanks for your help an I'll make a donationto the cause!!
