I posted a thread last week on an issues with Windows automatic update and was asked by Tashi to provide the following new thread.
Issue is windows update wont enable - appears to be related to virtumonde virus which clears and then returns. I performed kaspersky scan , then spybot from safe mode and cleaned and then HJT- saved log and booted. Was able to get automatic update to enable but after about 30 mins later got a CA alert about viruses and need to reboot. Aftrer rebot update not enableable again. I dont know how to link to original thread - it was called "windows automatic updates wont enable after virus". I m now get malicious adds popping up.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy. If you still need help, please do this:

Before you start, you are storing infected email, delete it:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst/Personal Folders/Junk E-mail/02 Oct 2007 08:22 from Elsa Acosta:Something hot/she.zip/she.exe ------> Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.bzp
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst/Personal Folders/Junk E-mail/02 Oct 2007 08:22 from Elsa Acosta:Something hot/she.zip ------> Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.bzp
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst MailMSMaill: infected - 2

You have multiple infections including virtumonde and this junk: XPAntiVirus. Let's start like this:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Follow the instructions in this tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic111715.html

3) When you finish, post a new HJT log and we will kill the rest of the junk.

Thanks

Ok
I get rid of the junk email
disabled Teatimer.
I performed stuff in XPANTIVIRUS removal - there were no files but there may have been registry settings changed. The registry fix seems to have clobered my CA ETRUST license code - that was good!
I could not get PANDA scan to run - kept getting agteway timeouts and buffer overruns.
Below is a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< update Java, se this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

You still have some junk in this HJT log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 12:31:19 PM, on 3/06/2008

Let's start with MBAM...

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks

I removed old java and updated to 6.6. Add/remove programs would not remove these - it did not offer the remove option. I had to use msicuu2.exe to remove all old Java. This all worked OK.
Ran MBAM scan - the log file is after the fixes were applied but some fixes required a reboot which I did. Got a msg application c:\...urqogvnf.dll is not valid windows image and same for hkwnnfor.dll. Then I ran HJT.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's do this:

Got a msg application c:\...urqogvnf.dll is not valid windows image and same for hkwnnfor.dll.
Looks like MBAM had to reboot to remove that junk, after a couple of restarts, if you get errors, post them "word for word".

C:\WINDOWS\FixCamera.exe <<< do you know what this is? If not, scan it here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and post the information.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [25325372068765623419003855169751] C:\Program Files\XP Antivirus\xpa.exe
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzdn32 - C:\WINDOWS\

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\XP Antivirus\ <<< delete that folder and contents

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log, the information I requested and any other comments you think will help.

Thanks

fixcam seems to be something to do with my webcam - what it does I have no idea.
cleaned up the registry settings
no folder called XP Antivirus present - so not deleted
ran atf cleaner
new log attached

Comments machine running better. update service now operational - updated onnenote 2003 sp3 and office 2003 sp3.
I have a user account thats supposed to be admin but seems to have been modified or restricted. seems to run slower as well eg explorer/tools/folder options is gone. Also most programs in "add or remove programs" are not showing the remove button.

Any ideas?
In general PC seems to be free from viruses.

Thanks for returning your HJT log and the feedback. The HJT log looks free of malware. You understand this junk does mess up settings and others stuff in Windows and sometimes the only way to fix it is a repair install of the operation system:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=repair+install+of+windows+XP&btnG=Google+Search
and sometimes a reinstall is needed:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=reinstall+of+windows+XP&btnG=Search

Before you do that you can look here to see if you can find a fix for the issues:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=repair+add+remove+programs&btnG=Search

I have a user account thats supposed to be admin but seems to have been modified or restrictedYou might try closing that user accout and setting up a new one.

eg explorer/tools/folder options is gone.
are you talking about Internet Explorer? If so you might give this a try:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/en-us

You can also ask for help with issues you can't resolve here:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

Let's run another Kaspersky Online Scan, I think we still have some junk to remove, I know we have infected System Restore files to clean yet. Use these settings:

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Thanks for returning the KOS results, you still have some nasties, we may have to run another tool? Let try it manually and see how it goes.

1) Make sure you can still see all files and folders.

2) Navigate to these files in red and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfyjualy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nqxmfsfb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sfiywcqt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tetqrlpv.dll
D:\downloads\downloaded stuff\Smiles.exe

3) Empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop and Restart the computer.

4) Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart and run a new KOS, no need to post it if it is clean, just let me know.

Thanks

These are all infected System Restore files and for some reason they are showing on two drives.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore
D:\System Volume Information\_restore

Make sure to clean them on both drives.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
