Hi,

My antivirus software CA Security Centre tells me I have the Vundo.aat virus but it keeps removing it and it keeps coming back, I've tried Spyware terminator to get rid, it doesn't work.

Following lots of other advice I've run HJT, the log is below, any help MUCH appreciated, this is doing my head in:

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Posted above and pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum are the directions, please read them and then post the required Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS).

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Great, thanks.

Just a quick question, I have tried running Kaspersky Online Scanner previously and it took a looong time, 3 hours to get to 49%, so in the end I killed it half way through due to the fact that I had to turn off my other adware and virus protection while it was scanning.

My question, can I run the scan, i.e. after its loaded all the virus definitions etc without being connected to the internet? I would be much happier having no protection if its not connect to the internet.

That's unusual, unless you have a hugh number of files on the computer or are scanning areas other that what I posted. The scan takes just over an hour on my computers.

You do not have to be online once you download and update, in fact it is best you stay offline as much as possible.

If you should have problems finishing, let me know and we will go another route.

I shall kick it off overnight tonight and just let it run to completion. I do have a lot of zip files on the laptop which seems to be where the scan was spending much of its time.

I'll post the output tomorrow evening when I get back from work.

http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the combofix log, a new HJT log and your feedback, how is the computer running now.

combofix does not update so there is no reason to keep it:

Click START then RUNNow type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The HJT log looks good except for the adware you seem to have kept?

I am not sure what you are saying here? Sounds like you are talking about two machines?

Hi Phil,

Is the Adware you're talking about the Crawler thing?

I'll get rid of that as its an annoying toolbar that was installed when I installed Spyware Terminator.

I got a bit confused with my "keep it running" sentence, its just one laptop.

Been running for a couple of hours now with no virus catches and no loaded CPU so looks like its Job Done.
