View Full Version : SpyFalcon removal (help)
I am unsure as to how SpyFalcon was first installed onto my system. At first I went to Start > Programs > SpyFalcon > Uninstall to try and remove it, but that did not work. I have tried to remove it by using Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search and Destroy, but have not been able to completely remove it. Below is the hijackthis log. Please help me with this problem, thank you very much.

Hi
Please follow the instructions here to remove SpyFalcon :-
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43659.html
When the smitrem tool has finished it will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C:
On your computer it will be C:\smitfiles.txt
Please copy & paste the contents of the smitfiles.txt into your next post here ...
Also run hijackthis and post a new hijackthis log
cheers
steam
I am still getting popups as well as the text bubble from the task bar saying "System Alert: Adware and Spyware Your comuter performance is slowed down. Your Internet connection speed has decreased. You recieve more spam emails than ever. Use Spyware scan to find out the reason." It comes in the form of a exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle that continously blinks.

I followed the link you gave me, and it told me to go to http://www.pandasoftware.com/ and to do an ActiveScan. I was unable to paste it here as it is too long, and i was unable to atach it as it is too big. i have the .txt if you want me to e-mail it to you (if it would help).

HI
Please zip the panda scan report and send it to me here :-
steamwizAThelp2go.com ... replace AT with @
Then .....
The smitrem tool only did a partial clean, please run it again and post a new log from it...
I also want you to run ewido...
Download ewido security suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)install, update and run it.
Please set up as :-
1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
2. Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
5. You may need to manually update the definitions which you can get HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)
6. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
Boot into safemode...and scan with Ewido
7. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
8. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
9. Once the ewido scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen called Save report.
Important - You need to click "Save report" and Save it to your desktop, or you wont have a log
reboot
Run another Panda scan
post a new hijackthis log + the ewido log + smitrem.txt + panda scan log (if possible)
cheers

Hi
I'm not sure what's going on here....
Your first 2 hijackthis logs showed the infection ... but the last one is clean ... so that's good...
=====================
first you ran smitrem ... it said you were clean but still showed bad files...

smitrem should have deleted those files...

=================
I think we've got it now, but please run the smitrem tool again and post the log...
Followed by another ewido scan, and post that log as well...
Then we'll deal with your Pandascan log.
cheers
steam
i did a smitrem scan (log below). but was unable to do an ewido scan because for some strange reason whenever i try to run it, it stops responding. but i am not getting any popups and the fake windows update icon is also gone.

HI
This time the smitrem log is clean :bigthumb:
Strange about Ewido.... but there's no need to run it again now...
Did you try to run ewido in normal mode or safemode ?
If you do need ewido at any time in the future, you may have to uninstall it and download a fresh copy.
steam
it's good that the smitrem log is really clean this time :)
i tried to run ewido in normal mode, but it didn't work...really strange.
so what about the pandascan log?

Hi
The vast majority of the files found by Panda are in the Norton protected recycle bin...
These cannot be deleted from windows, you need to open a command prompt and delete them from there...
Please do this :-
Go to Start > Run > type command & click OK
A command prompt will open....
Type the following exactly
del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\*.*
Make sure there is a space after del & before \\
Press enter
Wait for the command to execute, then type exit & press enter
Now run the Panda scan again ... the log should be very small this time, so you should be able to copy & paste it into your next post here...
steam
i can't execute it. below is the result i get.
del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\*.*
del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\*.*, Are you sure (Y/N)? Y
del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\NPROTECT.LOG
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I don't have Norton,so let me know if it works...
1. Right click the recycle bin and click empty recycle bin
2. Right click the recycle bin again and click empty norton protected recycle bin
steam

Hi
Please do this :-
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Make sure you Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files ... this will make the recycler folder visible... (re-hide these files/folders when finished...
Delete all the files in the ...
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT ...folder (do not delete the folder itself)
If there are any you cannot delete, then just delete what you can and let me know...
Then... try the Panda scan again...
steam
i don't know where the folder is... i tried searching for it, but i only found NPROTECT, which was an application, not a folder.
steamwiz
2006-03-25, 12:58
OK
Follow this path...
Click start > My computer > C: > RECYCLER > NPROTECT
This NPROTECT is a folder with files inside... delete everything you can from inside the NPROTECT folder...
Let me know...
steam
there might be a problem... i went to my computer > C: , but there was no RECYCLER (and therefore no NPROTECT).
steamwiz
2006-03-28, 22:43
The RECYCLER folder is a hidden folder, did you follow the instructions in post #16 to "Un-Hide protected operating system files" ?
Or you should be able to do it this way...
Highlight the following bold line, right click it > copy
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT
Go to the address bar & right click > paste .... press go and you should now be in the NPROTECT folder...
Delete everything you can from it...
steam
ok, i deleted everything except for 2 system files (unsure whether or not its ok to delete), and the NPROTECT.txt (it said unable to delete becaus eit was being used by another program).

2 system files ? ..... what were the names of these files ?
Run the Pandascan again now and copy & paste what it finds... it should be very small now.
steam
i am not at that computer right now. but the system file names were just numbers. should i delete anyway? and then run the panda scan?
steamwiz
2006-03-30, 22:24
Hi
Just run the Pandascan now, when I see the new log, we can make a decision about those two files...
steam
i e-mailed it to you.. too big to fit here.
steamwiz
2006-03-31, 22:36
Hi
You still have a million files in either C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT or C:\RECYCLER
Please do this...
Go here again :-
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT
and delete everything you can from the NPROTECT folder ...
THEN....
Empty your Recycle Bin ... if you have more than one account on the computer, empty the bins on all accounts ...
The other things that the Panda scan shows are tracking cookies, everybody gets these... Spybot S & D, Adaware and EWIDO should get rid of them all between them...
Try to do this and then run the Panda scan again, it should come up empty .... if it is still too big to post, don't e-mail it to me, just let me know in your next post ...there won't be anything new in it... that last log was 1meb in size
steam
steam
yes i am still here. sorry, i have been a bit busy. i am doing the panda scan now and will post the results later.
the panda scan is still too long...
steamwiz
2006-04-07, 23:07
HI
paste this into your address bar ...
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT
How many files are in the NPROTECT folder ?
Highlight everything in the folder...the nummber of files will be shown just above the START button...
I can't remember if you had several accounts on the computer, or whether you have more than one harddrive, or several partitions... but go to every account, harddrive and partition and empty the recycle bins first ... then check that NPROTECT folder, make a note of how many files there are (just for reference) then try to delete every file in the NPROTECT folder.
steam
right now it is 263 (+ the NPROTECT.txt which i can't delete). when i deleted all of them and id the panda scan there were 1500+ files. and when i was doing the panda scan the number of files started to increase inside the folder. so whenever i did soething such as open IE, start the panda scan. new files would appear after i deleted everything.

Oh dear... none of this should happen...
It looks like another messed up Norton installation, I sometimes get the impression that Norton causes more problems than all the malware put together, the number of people that can't connect to the internet, or specific sites, and Norton turns out to be the culprit, runs into thousands, and when you try to uninstall Norton, more problems start, nothing is easy with Norton... you are definitely better off without it.
will you check this please...
Delete the files from the NPROTECT folder, then look in your recycle bin ... are they in there ?
empty your recycle bin, then check the NPROTECT folder folder again...
Are they just moving backwards and forwards from one to the other ?
