After disappearing off for the weekend I have found the monkeys in my house have inadvertantly clicked yes to installing lots of bad things on the house pc, claiming complete ignorance it falls for me to sort it out...

The virus downloaded seems to be the zlob downloader.

I have gone through the "before you post" suggestions, to no avail. So far I have

Done a Kaspersky Online Scan (the results of which should follow)

Done a "safe mode" boot and run Spybot Search & Destroy (latest updates included) three of four times, which returns a persistant unwellcome guest in Zlob.Downlader.vcd, with the following dll's stubborn to shift and still present even when spybot says the problem is fixed - gnowmebk.dll_old and vregfwlx.dll_old

I have also run hijackthis (the results of which should follow)

Help would be massively apppreciated, the team there ridded me of a virtumonde virus earlier in the year after weeks of trying to battle it myself, with this one, I knew immedietly its out of my league to deal with and would really appreciate the help

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file & a fresh hjt log in your next reply. How's the system running?

hi blade, I have installed and run the tools that you mentionned, Malwarebytes Anti Malware tool needed a system reboot and I'm just running it again while I'm typing this. At first it seemed to have a problem getting rid of the two registry keys but it says its got them shifted now

The systems performance hasn't been adversely effected, internet was plagued with constant pop ups and warnings, my profile lost any ability to access the c drive and many of the program options were removed, my wallpaper had become a large unpleseant spyware warning, and it seemed the zlob downloader opened the door to a cache of nasty virus's, which spybot seemed to take care of.

that said the functionallity of the computer seems to be remedied now with the two removal tools you have given me. And all seems to be much more healthy, no nasty warnings, profile back to normal

Hi

Good. Looks better than the previous log :)

Please uninstall Spybot for now to make sure TeaTimer won't interfere fixing. You may reinstall it after system is clean.

Disable WinPatrol's realtime protection.
Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol in the system tray
Choose exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:

Close browsers and fix checked.

Hi Blade

ok the HJT log is on this message, I have done as you suggested and removed those two things on hjt, hunted around for that folder in the C drive but I think its already been erradicated. The PC seems much healthier, however spybot does seem to keep warning me of changes (which I deny) however I think that was the two things the HJT has removed.

I have noticed from my normal profile on the computer I have no access to the C drive and I am unable to use the log off features on the start menu (it only gives me the option to turn off computer, not to switch users/log off/etc) Not sure whether this would be symptomatic of something else on the computer or whether the virus that was on here has stripped me of these privelleges?

That's why I instructed to uninstall Spybot until fixing is complete :)

I have noticed from my normal profile on the computer I have no access to the C drive and I am unable to use the log off features on the start menu (it only gives me the option to turn off computer, not to switch users/log off/etc) Not sure whether this would be symptomatic of something else on the computer or whether the virus that was on here has stripped me of these privelleges?
download this zipfile (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/tools/VArestorepolicies.zip) created by Miekiemoes to your desktop.
Unzip it. Then RIGHTCLICK the VArestorepolicies.inf and select to Install from the Context menu.

Then, log off or reboot to apply the changes.

Note: Above will set the display in the Startmenu to Windows default. This in case you have modified this previously and already "disabled" some StartMenu items there.
It will also delete some policies which you *may have set yourself previously.

Hi blade,

Ok now the profile seems to be restored, I have access to C and have the ability to log on and off the account. There doesn't appear to be any other obvious signs of infection, is there anything i should do now?

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#scanners) to choose one

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Hi Blade, I have taken all the measures you have suggested though iespyad was a touch confusing. The computer now seems to be running without virus, and after updated spybot checks and malwarebytes checks nothing has popped up.

Thanks for all of your help in sorting my computer out for me, your help has been invaluable and it's been good to be guided through a stress free virus removal. I'll check back on this thread in case you have any other suggestions for me, but I think the virus has been removed and the computer is now clean.
