Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

You may have another hidden infection also?
http://www.castlecops.com/tk51216-QXK_Olive.html

I can not tell from just the HJT log, that is the reason for the Kaspersky Online Scan. If you want help, read the directions and then do this.

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

2) Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here along with the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfaudfix.

Thanks

Hi there, apologies for the delay in responding. I followed your instructions re Smitfraudfix etc and the report attached, but Kaspersky refuses to complete it's scan always stalling on a file associated with the SIMS 2 games?? I've run it 5-6 times now and it gets no further than 86-88% - even after 9 hours it hadn't moved on, and always stalling in the SIMS 2 directory??

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, proceed like this.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\ <<< update Java, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, read and follow the directions carefully.

I don't think I gave you this information, this is FYI:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=24810
http://www.castlecops.com/t187654-free_spyware_scwnload_a013_com_unknown_questionable.html

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Windows Defender: Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

6) Spyware Doctor <<< turn it off so it can not block us!
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

7) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

8) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some items will be gone, removed by the script)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the combofix log, a new HJT log and tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks...Phil

Hi again (and thanks so much for your continued and such rapid help!). I wasn't sure if you wanted both hjt logs from before and after the fix so I've posted them both in sequence:

The PC (it's a laptop) seems to be running fine, and a little bit quicker than before, but I haven't reactivated any of the processes we turned off or tried connecting to the internet yet (I've been using my PC to post here and get all the down loads etc). One thing I have noticed is that windows up-dates has now turned itself on and is no longer disabled.

Thanks for returning your information, I am sure you see the 016 DPF items with cut off information, I am hesitant to remove valid DPF's (Active X) If you wish to see what they are, use this tool: http://www.castlecops.com/ActiveX.html
For instance, O16 - DPF: {01A88BB1-1174-41EC-ACCB-963509EAE56B} - search of the CLSID number.
01A88BB1-1174-41EC-ACCB-963509EAE56B shows it is one of these:
http://www.castlecops.com/atxlist-336.html or http://www.castlecops.com/atxlist-1706.html
You can check the others if you wish and use HJT to remove any you do not want.

[QUOTE]One thing I have noticed is that windows up-dates has now turned itself on and is no longer disabled.[/QUOTE
]The malware does not want you to get updates, you may find other settings changed and need adjustment also.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

OK, I'll leave those DPF's for now if that's going to be OK and none are obviously malicious? But I have installed RC:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Good job, RC may come in very hand during an emergency, here is some information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654+

These instructions will uninstall combofix:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

We are checking now to be sure no malware was missed. I would like to try for a Kaspersky Online Scan, use the instructions I posted earlier. If you still can not run the scan, then try this one:

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks

Thanks, a little more manual work to do...

1) Delete this trojan in red
C:\WINDOWS\enrx.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Vapsup.fpv

2) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< clean the contents of the folder in red
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

3) Empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop and restart the computer.

Hi again, thanks very much for all your help so far. I've reactivated all the process etc we disabled and all seems to be running well. As a double check I ran a Spy-Bot check and that was clean but a Spyware Dr check still found 2 problems:

1. Application.NirCmd (26 infections!!)

2. Trojan.Generic

A further KAV scan produced:

Thanks for the feedback, somehow System Restore made a backup of that infected file:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP5\A0000360.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Vapsup.fpv

Clean SR files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Spyware Dr <<< I have no idea what that is? Is it this?
http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/

I don't use it and wonder that it can find stuff when Kaspersky (may be the best there is) can not.

I found this: http://www.pctools.com/mrc/infections/id/Application.NirCmd
http://www.smartcomputing.com/QABoard/QAMain.aspx?search=fq&fqid=3269454&lnqs=df&qapg=1&guid=
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Application.NirCmd+&btnG=Search

Is this a trial version? Would not be the first time a trial found stuff to get a sale.

My suggestion would be to follow up our scans with a full system scan with McAfee and Windows Defender.

Interesting that Spyware Dr is not well know - it is indeed a trial version that I down loaded when SpyBot was stuggling to deal with my virtumonde problem. It appears to have good reviews and be well rated by several sites though and no mention of it being one of the rouge progs available that find stuff just to get your cash?? I did notice this in the small print however:

"updates may also differ to those supplied to registered users."

As in up-dates for the trial version will deliberately find stuff to make you pay!!??

"The program can't check for definition updates. Error Found: Code 0x80072ee2"

You can remove Smitfraudfix from your computer, what is being identified is the tool, not malware, did you read this in the beginning?

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

For instance: c:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Desktop\Anti-Spyware\SmitfraudFix.exe\REBOOT.EXE Generic PUP.g(Potentially Unwanted Program)
McAfee finds REBOOT.EXE as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and it is part of Smitfraudfix, the program can not run without it.

Here is information about the error message you are receiving from Windows Defender:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Code+0x80072ee2%22&btnG=Google+Search

If you can not update the program, you may want to uninstall it in Add Remove programs and install it again:
