View Full Version : Add Remove Programs won't open
I am using XP and when I go to the control panel and open Add Remove Programs it says to wait while list is being populated but it never opens. Not sure if this is caused by spyware or malware. I will wait to run the logs if this could be the cause.

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe)
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only
* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Other than that looks just fine. I suggest defragging hard drives since it may sometimes help with this kind of cases too.

That is something I will do over the weekend. After I do I will get back to you and let you know if it helps. Actually I am not sure if this is a coincidence but at the same time as the program wouldn't open I was having my external hard drive crash. Once I realized the drive wasn't operating right I disconnected it and it would take a little while but the add remove program finally opened. Do you think the non opening program was related to the failed drive? Luckily the drive was less than a year old and was covered by warranty. I did lose quite a few files.

That's highly possible. Anyway, defragging occasionally is recommended action to do.
