View Full Version : Windows explorer restarts repeatedly, seen hints of Virtumonde on Scans!!!

Hello, this is my first time posting.
I've tried so many different ways to clean up my computer, but I must have installed some real bad nasties. About a week and a half ago my computer began slowing down significantly, Windows explorer was restarting and Internet Explorer opened up and brought me to the usual "Your system is corrupted, download blah blah blah to scan." SO, I tried everything in MY power. System Restore didn't work. Tried using spybot but it seems that the malware just keeps coming back. I don't know what else to do, that's why I'm here. I scanned with Kaspersky two days ago, and I used AVAST today to get rid of some supposed trojans, but computer is running just as bad. Let me know if I need to do a scan again with Kaspersky.

Hi

Please uninstall Spybot for now to make sure TeaTimer won't interfere fixing. You may reinstall it after system is clean :)

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Looks like you posted old hjt log. When running HijackThis.exe right click over filename and select run as administrator. Please post back new log.

Hi

You're currently running both Norton and Avast. It's not recommended to run multiple antivirus programs in same system. Decide which one you want to keep and remove other one.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log. Run DSS again and post its log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:

Cracks are bad stuff and you got probably infected by one of those. My advice is to stay away from them.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Hello! Wow, it seems my computer is running much more efficiently now. Doesn't slow down or restart, and I'm not being directed to any pop-ups. Thank you so much for everything. It seems so easy, but I could have never done it by myself. You guys have really got a good thing going here, and I don't think I or anyone else could fully express my gratitude.

So, on the last bit of stuff you told me to do, I have some questions.
I have vista, so I'm not sure if you can still use the run command to uninstall combofix. If you can, I couldn't find it and therefore didn't get to uninstall that. Also, when I updated Windows, it installed updates and then asked if I wanted to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1, which takes up a lot of space. You probably know what it is. Do you advise that I download it or not? Again, thank you for everything

Ok, I uninstalled combofix. I wasn't too sure about SP1 either. I heard it has caused more problems than it has fixed. I downloaded spywareblaster. Yes, Avast is good choice. Other good free ones are Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/) and AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition).

Hey, I did a virus scan with avast, because it felt like my computer was acting up again. it found at least 14 infected files, and deleted most of them, but I'm afraid there are still some left. I don't know how they came back, but they obviously did. What would you like me to do? There are no pop ups, just the wishy-washiness of my computer. The log looks clean. You could do one more scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) to see if it detects something not visible in hjt log.

Hey Blade,

I scanned with Kaspersky, and absolutely nothing showed up. Not even any suspicious files. I guess I am clean. No cracks for me! Lol. But it seems that my computer is still running way below normal. I did a Pit Stop Optimize run, and it showed an excessive amount of things that are way below normal for an average computer. Is there anything that you might be able to guide me to, which would allow my computer to speed itself up? I know this is out of the realm of defeating viruses, but you guys are so much more learned than I am. I appreciate all that you have done for me, and I don't want to be over-staying my welcome with the safer-networking forum.
