View Full Version : Help - is my system clean now?

Holdfast

I had a very nasty scare earlier with a very sophisticated paypal phising site (I think another thread lower down the board also mentions something similar).

My system automatically rebooted while browsing a site earlier today and then after restarting everything seemed OK.

I only realised it was not after getting sent to a paypal phishing page (with a normal looking paypal URL) AFTER I entered my username and password on a redirected and very authentic paypal login page (again, complete with normal-looking paypal URL). I subsequently changed my password on paypal and ebay (the only two secure sites I used after the presumed time of infection) from a separate computer and hopefully that side of things is sorted. Hopefully.

I'm sure I got hijacked and the hosts file redirected me. In an attempt to clean my system I've tried repeatedly AVG, S&D, AdAware & CCleaner with restarts in between to try to flush anything into the open and I think my system is now clean - most of them didn't pick up anything apart from a variety of tracking cookies since deleted and certainly no viruses were detected. At least, testing out ebay and paypal with deliberately fake passwords doesn't lead to the phising page any more.

What I need to know is if my system is clean yet or I need to do more. I'm particularly worried as to whether I have a keylogger or something else still on my system.

I'm not a techy person, so please help me! HJT log below...

Argh, the problem still happens!

I go to paypal and get this login screen:

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/6224/loginwu7.th.jpg (http://img525.imageshack.us/my.php?image=loginwu7.jpg)

If I then type in a fake email & password I get this phising site:

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6470/phishjr4.th.jpg (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phishjr4.jpg)

Note, it all appears be signed by VeriSign, etc.

HELP!

(I've saved the HTML source for the phising page if anyone needs it)

I've also repeated getting a HJT log, in case there are any differences now compared to before. Please note, I haven't browsed any sites apart from Yahoo, "Paypal" and here since my previous HJT log....

Apologies for not adding this to my previous post, I can't seem to edit posts in this forum

Hello, thank you very much for your reply.

Since posting previously, I read this board further and diagnosed my problem as the same affecting another recent poster here - I had the MBR rootkit virus which I was able to detect using the GMER tool. Dangerous to self-diagnose & treat I know, but I needed to clear my system ASAP.

I have managed to remove that using a specialist mbr removal tool and have subsequently received clear reports from GMER, Kapersky Online, and all the other more regular apps - Adaware, Spybot S&D, AVG Free, etc. I cannot really understand the HJT log, but it doesn't seem to include anything concerning. The system remains clear following repeated restarts, with no problems with paypal redirection or indeed any other sort of virus, leading me to believe that everything is now completely cleared.

I have also ensured all updates to all software have been applied (checked via Secunia's online scanner) - I had some slightly outdated media players mainly - and old versions of Java have been removed and my IE settings are as secure as I can realistically make them while keeping usability.

I have also purged all previous system restore points and created a new one and have backed up important files just in case of future difficulties.

While I didn't quite use this forum as it was intended, it definitely helped me solve the problem and I'm very grateful for all the expertise on display here.

This was the first virus/spyware problem I've had since I've been online (only since about 95, but still, not a bad track record of safety), and I'm still not entirely sure how this rootkit virus was able to get through the security I have, but I think my system is now clean and probably more secure now than it's been before.

If there is anything else I should do to keep things safe in future, I would be very grateful. Thanks again for having such a good resource here.

Nice to hear that system is well again :)

I could add to those you meantioned Hosts file installation. Using it myself and haven't regretted my choice :)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Among that basic carefulness is naturally needed. Read this (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279) Tony Klein's 'So how did I get infected in the first place?' text.

Thank you! Esp. the tips re: preventing a slowdown when using a hosts file

While I managed to solve the problem before you replied, it was very much down to the expertise on display in other threads here and I will be making a donation in recognition for the sterling resource it is.

Thanks again.
