Hi guys, I'm running Vista Starter, and Spybot doesn't want to run!
The shortcut is automatically set to admin rights, i continue on the Control for the program without a filename... a black screen (SDMain?) comes up, then nothing happens!

Intel 1.8ghz proc (i think), 512 MB RAM. anything else? ;) - ChrisWar666

Hello ChrisWar. Have you read the suggestions made by Zenobia?

That happens when you doubleclick the Spybot shortcut?

i continue on the Control for the program without a filename
Is that User Account Control?

Hi guys, sorry for the delay in responding but I've been busy taking care of a month-old puppy... and the wireless connection i 'borrow' at home has been dodgy...

Anyway, to the problem:
drrag: The problem is I can't even get into Spybot, teatimer -is- running, and the security centre (if you mean the vista SC??) shows that spybot is not updated....

zeno: I'm going through the start menu on a shortcut automatically configured for admin, but also happens when i right-click the SDMain file. updated to a 1.5 beta after i posted, but now it seems to not load at all, even without admin privileges. going to try 1.6....
Yep, twould be the User Account Control screen. it's after that that the black window (i guess sdmain) shows up, disappears and then nothing happens.

Any ideas? - Chris

Edit / p.s.: Also have AVG 8, which I understand mistakes some immunizations for threats, but that wouldn't stop Spybot opening, would it??

Chris: The latest version of Spybot-SD (stable) is 1.5.2.20. Beta 1.6 is a beta, which means it is not perfect. If you want to consider trying out for v.1.6 I would recommend that you wait until the RC (Release Candidate) is released.

You have tried the Run as Admin" correct?

I would suggest you upgrade to 1.5.2.20. Then update and immunize. Can you uninstall the version you have now?

Not sure if this is the problem, but it's worth mentioning, just to check. If you're rightclicking SDMain.exe in Program Files, then that isn't the main
spybotSD.exe. SDMain.exe is the Spybot-S&D security center launcher.(I checked and doubleclicking it does open a black window, though Spybot does launch after that for me.)

And your start menu shortcut,is that a custom shortcut you set up,or did you just set Spybot in All Programs to always run as Admin?

If it is a custom one,is it possible maybe you created a shortcut to sdmain.exe on the start menu, thinking it was the main SpybotSD.exe?

spybotSD.exe is now hidden in Program Files.

Are you running any firewall that prevents Spybot from starting?
It wouldn't start at my PC with ZoneAlarm - I had to de-install both and re-install Spybot first and then ZoneAlarm...

lion: A firewall will not prevent any program from starting up. It will, however, enable it permission whether to access the Internet though.

I've never heard of any HIP programs such as Comodo Pro that might hinder the activation of Spybot.

Chris, when you double click or "Run as Admin", do you see the loading bar?

I know how a firewall is working, Mr. WiseGuy

I can only tell what I have experienced - Spybot was not starting and TeaTimer was not working when I installed Zonealarm before Spybot.
After deinstalling Spybot and ZoneAlarm and installing Spybot first it worked.

So, drrragostea, you see it is never too late to learn...

Thank you for the compliment.

Lion, as I see too there's always more to learn.

OK, I was using the RC, then I had this problem and decided to try the beta (it was a 1.5 beta only).
Thanks for the firewall help, I checked (and rechecked and rechecked and rec...) but it was all ticked (looked like it wasn't that).
drrag, running as admin -just- showed the black screen, the loading bar didn't appear.

Zenobia, thanks for that! I've corrected the shortcut (I can't remember if it was mine or SB's..)
I did set the SB shortcuts already existing to run as admin, but how it moved from spybot to SDMain I don't know!
As above, do/did have a 1.5 spybot, was showing hidden and system files, but didn't know about there was -another- system files option in vista! have now seen the file and it seems to be running now, hope it'll work after!

You're welcome.Hope it kept running okay. :)
If you had/or have a Spybot 1.5 beta, those are quite old,the Spybot 1.5.2 version is a final release:
http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
The latest beta out is 1.6:

Twas shortlived.. last night when i made that post i managed to open up the spybot interface in admin mode, it acted as though it was a fresh install (technically a fresh install for the beta, not for SB), taking me thru the setup/tutorial screens.
As it was late (11! i know, i'm getting old ;)) i went to sleep. shut the laptop up, which puts it to sleep. opened it up today, and SB's gone back to not opening. Will have to see if it works after a reset.
I have a 1.5.2.2 beta. will probably try and get the 1.6 beta (i like to try, even if i'm not -that- clever) - Chris

I hear you,my eyelids start to droop around 11:00 p.m. now,too.

The non-beta final release of Spybot is version 1.5.2.20.If that is the version number listed under Help, then About, then you should have the most current final release.

Is the black sdmain window still appearing when you try to start Spybot?

ChrisWarFi

Here you go Zen, have some Brasilian coffee :D

Mmm I didn't go through Help | About (can't start the program..), I went through Props | version number of the spybotSD executable.
I adjusted the shortcut to point to spybotSD instead of SDMain...
I also downloaded the distributed testing service, and i'm getting (Could not start service!)... seems to work when i use the stand alone tho!

I think I mentioned that I have AVG 8, which is what prompted me to see what spybot picks up regarding adware...

ah well, any help, again, would be appreciated :) - Chris

Here you go Zen, have some Brasilian coffee :D ...
Compared Energy Drinks, Starbucks (I don't know if it is Brasilian coffee or not) will cure those droopy eyelids (or give you a heart attack):
Starbucks:
Starbucks Brewed Coffee - Average Caffeine Level: 210mgs in each 16 ounce cup (13.2mgs per oz.)
Starbucks Doubleshot - Average Caffeine Level: 120mgs in each 6.5 ounce can (18mgs per oz.)
Energy Drinks:
Red Bull – Average Caffeine Level: 80mgs in each 10 ounce can (8mgs per oz.)
Amp – Average Caffeine Level: 71mgs in each 8 ounce can (8.8mgs per oz.)
XS - Average Caffeine Level: 85mgs in each 8.4 ounce can (10mgs per oz.)

Thanks, lol.Looks like I need it,of course you can't go through Help,About if you cannot start the program. :red:

I haven't tried the distributed testing service as yet,so I'm not familiar with it.

Okay,in SpybotSD.exe Properties the file version listed should be 1.5.2.20 on the details tab for the latest version. Spybot 1.5 versions below that number are outdated beta versions, and should not be used,as 1.5.2.20 is the latest final release.
If your file version is below that, then you might want to uninstall the older version, and install the latest final version.
http://www.spybot.info/en/howto/uninstall.html
http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
If your file version on the Details tab in SpybotSD.exe Properties is 1.5.2.20,then you have the correct version.
If you want to beta test, you'd need a current one, which is 1.6 and up,as I understand it.

So,after adjusting your shortcut the sdmain window doesn't open anymore, but Spybot still will not start?

Lol,md,no Starbucks close by.But Tim Horton's coffee can keep me up for a week or so,if I get an extra large. :D:

ChrisWar666
2008-06-16, 18:32
md, that proves it! Coffee pawns everything else ;) (i can't/don't want to drink energy drinks. red bull says it's taurine is synthetic... but i don't trust them! :D)
looks like starbucks coffees come from various places, but they -do- have a brasilian blend (maybe only sold in packets...) :P

Yep, it is 1.5.2.2, but I'm sure i downloaded the beta version before 1.6... strange!
That's correct, adjusted my start menu shortcut, then (when it doesn't want to work) my computer thinks for a bit, then goes silent again.
When it does want to work, it thinks for a bit then shows the loading bar and loads normally. Ran a scan afterwards and everything's ok, looks like it was just AVG picking up spybots immunization (although bizarrely, i quarantined in AVG and spybot didn't detect any un-immunized entries...)
Also Spybot is set-up to request admin permission from within the program, by default, so we(I) don't need to set to always run as admin.

Thanks for the help, but still not sure why it works sometimes and doesn't others!

Zenobia
2008-06-16, 20:01
There were no unprotected items listed in Spybot's Immunize section after you quarantined what AVG found?

Please try booting into safe mode, and starting Spybot, let me know if the program seems to load okay then and/or if it loads quicker.

Have you been having any other noticable problems with your computer?

ChrisWar666
2008-06-16, 21:03
Hi again Zen. Will do a safe mode boot when I get home. Spybot didn't show anything unimmunized after the quarantine, but that could be something to do with the startup pattern of SB (look at the other post about someone really ANGRY with SB; everytime SB starts the hosts file is rewritten, not sure if it does so with other immunes..)

Other problems.... not really, just a bit of lag in games (more to do with bad connections and bad graphix card than adware, as HL1 & 2 lag when they have to process complicated things offline, and the sims 2 doesn't show textures correctly..)

- Chris

Adware found by AVG: Generic, ISearch, TitanShieldAntispyware, NewDotNet. All in HKLM/Soft../micro../IExplor../ActiveX Compatibility

Zenobia
2008-06-16, 22:21
No,if any Immunization is undone,Spybot doesn't automatically readd immunization. It's done manually,by clicking the Immunize button with the green cross next to it.

drragostea
2008-06-17, 02:13
Just also a quick note. Chris, the TitanShield and etc. are false positives. I'm not sure if AVG has fixed that, because I haven't been using it for some months.

Story was that if you quarantined or deleted the "warnings (registry keys)", Spybot and SpywareBlaster will have some entries unimmunized.

Zen: Ok, well I reimmunized anyway. I can't remember how long the scan took in normal mode, but in safe it took 20 mins. (Didn't find any problems, just some usage tracks)

Drrag, yep I know, I did a little bit of research afterwards and found that, but what I thought was strange was that after quarantining in AVG, spybot didn't see anything that was unimmunized (i'm talking about the columns protected / unprotected).

still not loading sometimes, and (sorry i just remembered this now :P) sometimes the teatimer icon doesn't show in the systray, but it's functioning anyway...

When starting Spybot in safe mode, did you have any problems starting Spybot,or did it start right up?

ChrisWarFi
2008-06-18, 15:10
Well, in safe mode there were no problems. Just opened in normal mode again without problems, downloaded some updates, so i'll run a scan in normal mode in a little bit, to find out how long it takes (even if it does have a few more detections).. - Chris

2008-06-18, 20:15
Could I see a startup list,if you are able to open Spybot okay next time?
Open Spybot,click mode,advanced mode,then Tools,System Startup,then click Export,then Save.
Go to View Report->View Previous Report->doubleclick SpybotSD.System startup report.txt, after it opens in Spybot rightclick, select Select All,rightclick again and select Copy, then paste it here.

2008-06-19, 01:20
Here you go Zen, while trying to get SB to work previously I was shutting down most things (including AVG because of some bad detections on their part..)
- Chris
p.s. right-click? such a laborious way (CTRL+A | CTRL+C | ALT+TAB | CTRL+V :p:)
Edit: Hmmm? Teatimer on LU? I'd prefer on LM.... any idea how to move it? [/lazy]

I see you do have Zone Alarm. Is that the free or Pro version?

Sorry, not quite getting the Teatimer question.Do you mean you`d prefer it be at HK_LM?

ChrisWarFi
2008-06-19, 02:56
Hiya. It's the free version.

And yes, surely it would be more effective in LM than CU, at least on multi-profile computers.. Unless I missed an option somewhere... - Chris

Zenobia
2008-06-19, 10:11
Not all users might want to use Teatimer,so the startup entry is put into HK_CU.Teatimer can just be activated on other user accounts by going to Tools->Resident,and checkmarking Teatimer.

Odd that you have a somewhat similar problem to lion1860's,and you both have Zone Alarm.

I know it seems unlikely for a firewall to cause problems with Spybot starting, but then again I've had weirder things happen to me before,so I try to take such things at face value.
Are you able to log off the Internet? If so,maybe you could just temporarily shut down Zone Alarm, and see if Spybot starts normally without problems then.

ChrisWarFi

Mmmm ok. First of all I'll have to find out when SB isn't working, to then turn off ZA and try it.
I'm on a laptop so i'm ok leaving the net ;)

Usually,Spybot loads right up for me after the UAC prompt, and doesn't take time before I see the loading bar. So,if Spybot has been slow starting as well as sometimes not starting, you could try shutting down Zone Alarm any time just to see what happens. :)

ChrisWarFi

Hiya Zen, was looking at some other posts before posting my details. Turning ZA off (unfortunately) does nothing with regards to this problem, it's not loading ATM, and I turned ZA off (i guess it goes all the way off, didn't look in process/services as they give a warning that it will disable its internet protection) but it still wouldn't load.
The Teatimer icon is showing in the systray...
Ran a scan (in normal mode), with a few updated defs and it took 31 mins, instead of safe mode's 20.

Hi. :)
I'm getting a bit stumped.
Not sure what would cause Spybot not to startup sometimes.

If it starts fine in safe mode,it would seem to me maybe something running is causing problems, and it starts fine in safe mode because that 'something' isn't running then. But I cannot figure what it would be. But then, you also indicated you were shutting down most other apps when starting Spybot,so that may not be it at all.

Here you go Zen, while trying to get SB to work previously I was shutting down most things (including AVG because of some bad detections on their part..)

You don't really have an overabundance of startup items, and even some of those are disabled in startup,I see.

You have no problems starting any other apps on your computer?

ChrisWarFi
2008-06-20, 01:51
I'm already stumped ;)
Mmmm it started fine -once- in safe mode, it may not start again. If you want i can try again, but not sure if it would help much.
Yep, the first few times I tried shutting down almost everything, but later I still had most things open, usually just shut down the HP thingy.
Yeah, I disabled some things to try and speed up my computer, also disabled some services, if you know of any that SB needs?

The only problems are graphix related, the rest of the stuff starts normally (other than the teatimer icon not displaying sometimes... but showing under processes). - Chris

Zenobia
2008-06-20, 02:10
Teatimer does that on my computer too, sometimes.TT is always running in Task Manager when I check, though.

Spybot just needs the SBSD Security Center service for Windows Security Center,as far as I know.
http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-3465.html

You could try opening Spybot in safe mode a couple more times if you would like to.Just to see what happens. No need to do a scan each time, unless you were planning on scanning anyways.

ChrisWarFi
2008-06-20, 02:27
Yeah, I had that on automatic anyway. Will see if SB works in safe mode all the time, but there's not much else we can do. Would Process Monitor be any use? - Chris

re:Process Explorer.Well,it might, but I would not be much help to you. That's something that might be more bitman or md territory. But,you could give it a try and see what you come up with.

Mmm strange, two things:
Tried to start SB, didn't work. Thought it a bit strange that 75%+ of RAM was being used after closing down most processes, opened the 'other' processes (system ones i think), and shut down some useless things like search indexer and print spooler. Opened spybot again and surprise surprise, it worked!! could it have something to do with RAM?? (512 MB with vista, i know its low but that's how they sell it!)

second thing, last night spybot wouldn't work. Tried to get into a game called planeshift (planeshift.it) in an area that causes problems for my comp (and others) due to lag (=resource strain). this area, like spybot, sometimes works for me, sometimes doesn't. This time it didn't work for me! Not sure if it's connected but i'll try to research more! - Chris

Hmmm can't edit posts after logging out of a session :(

The second item appears to be unrelated (unfortunately!) just had the game not work, and tried spybot but it worked. Still have to try the safe mode tests - Chris

I was thinking of that, which was partly why I was asking if you were having problems with other apps and how your computer was running, etc.
But if you do have Vista Starter Edition, then from what I could find,512 MB of Ram is over the minimum requirements.Minimum is 384 MB ram, recommended is 512 MB,maximum is 1024 MB.That info is under system requirements here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/starter/default.mspx
Plus,I was thinking that if not enough ram was part of the problem, you would think Spybot would run slow when scanning also. But 31 minutes isn't too bad of a scan time in normal mode.
Though if shutting down some other processes helps, perhaps you might be on to something. You could try a couple times shutting down less important processes and running Spybot, and see what happens.

I also asked for help,so I'll tell you some suggestions after I go get them.

Okay,md usa spybot fan suggests that you might want to uninstall all copies of Spybot (if there are more than one) and start over. You might want to unimmunize and uncheck Teatimer and sdhelper first.
How to uninstall:
http://www.spybot.info/en/howto/uninstall.html
When you reinstall, you should probably let the shortcuts be generated from the installation. You can just set the default shortcuts to Run as Administrator(properties-advanced).

Looks like Spybot is installed to C:\Arquivos de Programas and most of your other programs appear to be installed in C:\Program Files. That probably wouldn't cause any problems, but to be on the safe side,md says you might want to install to C:\Program Files.md thinks everything will install to C:\Program Files if you install in English, and after the install you could switch the language if you need too.

Hi Zen :)
I kill less important processes anyway, doesn't help free RAM much, but it makes me happier that there's less c**p around ;P.
The problem with the game is due to bad graphics (integrated) and low(ish?) processing power.

md/Zen: Hmph! That's just a trick to make me beta-test, isn't it?! ;) Ah well, guess it's time to take the plunge.
I only changed the shortcut to try to get SB to run properly, as when I tried to locate the file I couldn't (did have hidden files on, but this critical system file stuff from vista is what had me), so I redirected it to what I thought was the file (SDMain).
No need to do Run as admin, SB automatically requests elevated privileges :)

Directories: No no, the computer (OS)'s just bilingual, some interfaces in English, some in Portuguese. Arquivos de Programas & Program Files are one and the same. I had a scare with this as well, trying to find one or the other. Not sure if it's a vista feature or not, but -all- OS-created dirs have the same thing (Users & Usuários), it's just folders specifically created by a program/user that have to be exact (no-one actually translates program names, but it would be something like "Anti-spyware" OR "Anti-Espião").

It's just started raining here in Rio, so I'll install 1.6 b now :( - Chris

Chris (ChrisWar666 (http://forums.spybot.info/member.php?u=41826) or ChrisWarFi (http://forums.spybot.info/member.php?u=42473)):

... Directories: No no, the computer (OS)'s just bilingual, some interfaces in English, some in Portuguese. Arquivos de Programas & Program Files are one and the same. ...
I think it's strange because both are shown in the Spybot System Startup report in post # 27 (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=203478&postcount=27) and the startup entry for TeaTimer is the only one pointing to C:\Arquivos de Programas. I would assume that if that were a case of "... some interfaces in English, some in Portuguese ..." that a single report would not detect the difference.

That's why I questioned the fact and because I assume the pointers in the shortcut to SpybotSD generated during installation would most likely point the same directory (C:\Arquivos de Programas) as the startup entry for TeaTimer which is C:\Arquivos de Programas and you are the only person that I recall having a "it works sometimes and sometimes not" problem.

Where does the SpybotSD.exe shortcut point to?

Hi md. I did a little research, didn't find much in English (as everyone would see program files in English Vista), but did in Port. Apparently Program Files is the "Physical" name, while the language specific name is "Virtual".

I guess the fact that teatimer references AdoP has to do with the install date, at that time I hadn't put (tried to put, don't know what I did!) English on here, so it installed "knowing" the Portuguese name, so teatimer references AdoP.
Mmm! Zonealarm does actually think they're different files, it must hard-wire the "shown" path, not the virtual path.

Yep, SB's start menu shortcut -does- point to AdoP, but Vista recognizes this as Program Files, so it loads from there. Anyway will uninstall/reinstall tonight :) - Chris

How is it going?
