Hi. I'm new here, found you guys through googling the message I've used as a title. Saw illukka in action & was hoping you guys could help me. I don't think my thread belongs in this forum but I'll give it a shot.
My problem began when I was trying to clear the processes in my task manager.
I googled one of the "image names" (I forget which one & it has mysteriously disappeared from my recent google searches) & was directed to a website that told me the "image name" was sometimes used by microsoft but most often used as a "family keylogger". It suggested I download Spyware Doctor, run a scan, and remove the program. I did & it turned out dozens of trojans and hundreds of viruses (which I was skeptical about). While it was scanning, my AIM crashed & the message "the application or DLL c:\windows\system32\wsys.dll is not a valid windows image" was displayed three times. Once for AIM, once for the task manager, and once for googletoolbarnotifier (which I know nothing about.)
I restarted my computer several times, each time was presented with the same three messages. I would open Mozilla but it would stop responding. I finally restarted my computer for about the 5th time. I stopped receiving the messages & everything seems to be operating fine.
I'm still worried and I was hoping you guys could offer any explanations on the mysterious appearance & disappearance of those messages. I was also wondering if you guys could suggest some tools to clean up my computer, check for viruses & stuff.
Lastly, I lost my system restore disk not too long after purchasing my Dell which was like 8 years ago = \

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe)
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only
* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsys.exe process belongs to STARR keylogger (http://www.castlecops.com/s4271-WSYS_EXE.html). Do you know anything about it?
There's also visible sign of a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Wow, thats kind of a lot to take in. We pretty much need the internet at all times. My mom was actually ranting about an unexplainable $299 purchase charged on her card last month, we accused my thief of a sister. We don't even have the disks the computer came with, which makes reformatting impossible (without finding another way to purchase the disk.)
A friend of my dads once said that, no matter WHAT you do to a computer, nothing can ever be completely erased from the computer. It'll always be there, something along the lines of that. Wouldn't that make reformatting useless? I told my mom we might as well just try to get a new computer (shes a cheap sonofabitch, though.)

It's true that hard drive data can be restored. However, reformatting kills the infection for good.
