View Full Version : Unknown malware - search engine spoof, etc.

Something switched my default search engine from Google to a quickly-changing spoof site. The names rotate, but include asearchbox(dot)com, searchinglines(dot)com, and a few others. I took a screencap of the asearchbox one (hope the link to my Photobucket is legal to post), and you can see at the bottom the real URL all the links are trying to send me to.

I use Avant browser, and it resisted the change, but the main Windows (XP+SP3) Internet Options was compromised. I deleted the new search value and restored Google as the default there, and I've regained some control. I'm still having random slowdowns, and the PC is taking forever to boot.

One other quick thing: I had mistakenly left a CD-RW disc that I had used for a backup in my disc drive. I believe the malware somehow was writing to the disc, and was using it as a boot CD. Is that possible? I realized my error, used my Cyberlink program to erase and reformat the disc, and ejected it. Should I trash the disc, or is it safe for future use once my system is clean again?

Hi

Nothing malicious there. You don't have much programs in startup so that shouldn't be the problem.

Is this in purpose set to be run on every startup:
O4 - Startup: Shortcut to procexp.exe.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Software\Process Explorer\procexp.exe ?

You might want to disable it by fixing the entry with hjt (disable TeaTimer before that) to see if it makes any difference.

Have you defragged hard drive(s) lately? If not, do so.

Here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html) you find hints to make system quicker.

Thanks once again Blade! My PC has been running great since you helped me removed Virtumonde (etc) a couple of months ago.

Yes, I have Process Explorer in my Startup group. I only have 512M of memory, and having the icon in the tray helps me to know when I'm pushing the machine too hard. :laugh: It doesn't seem to take up much memory, and it starts faster from the tray if I need to open it when the system bogs down.

Since I removed the CD-RW from the disc tray, the slow bootup has stopped. Any idea if that was part of the problem? It's the first time that has ever happened.

Thanks again for checking my reports. Like I said, I deleted the rogue entry that had taken over my default Search option, but I wanted to make sure that was the only thing that had been switched.

I'll try a defrag and the rest now that I'm sure there's nothing bad hanging around.

Good to hear that problem got solved :)

If I recall it right Windows goes thru all drives with media inside after bootup. That said, if you have CD in CD drive then system reads that too.
