View Full Version : Pest Trap and Other Problems

My PC was infected by Pest Trap. I have used Spybot and 'Hijack This' to remove Pest Trap and other nasties, however I have residual problems.

My desktop was blacked out, with a bogus spyware warning and hyperlink to www.hypoteches.com. I removed a file called C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html, now my desktop is whited out. Whatever residual virus is in my PC is obviously looking for the this deleted file but can't find it - hence the white out.

I additionally have x2 bogus red buttons with white crosses in my tool tray. They continually warn of spyware and offer to download an anti-spyware application. I have permanently hidden them, but want them removed.

I may also have a WINFIXER infection, by SPYBOT doesn't detect this.

PC-Cillin detects the following file on boot-up, despite me manually deleting it every time:

C:\Documents and Settings\Paul Gibbs\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B2F2VJ24\nc[1].anr

Using XP and IE Explorer.
PC-Cillin installed.
SPYBOT Resident installed.
All MS updates now loaded.

Looking forward to some expert advice.

Regards, Paul

I have continued to run SPYBOT, HIJACK THIS, and also SMITREM.

While I successfully deleted PEST TRAP previously, my PC has just been reinfected. I'm operating PC-CILLIN and SPYBOT RESIDENT. Will download XP & MS IE SP2 when my machine is clean. How do I prevent reinfection in the mean time?

My PC is also being reinfected with SMITFRAUD-C despite SPYBOT Search & Destroy detecting and fixing file: C:\WINSTALL.exe

I also continue to be attacked by TROJ_ANI.K. Despite manually removing the file, it continually reappears on boot-up:

C:\Documents and Settings\Paul Gibbs\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B2F2VJ24\nc[1].anr[/INDENT]

Which of my problems is this trojan producing?

I'm also getting a pop-up wanting me to buy an anti-spyware application. Some detail below in an attempt to identify the rogue.

I also continue to get assorted cookies from sites I haven't visited such as Doubleclick and HitsLink. How do I stop these?

Remidied desktop white-out mentioned in initial post by unchecking Desktop Uninstall in the Diplay Properties / Customize Desktop / Desktop Items / Web dialogue box.

Looking forward to your advice.

The saga continues...................

I have now downlaoded and used ewido anti-malware to scan and delete rogue entries. This appeared to detect a trojan that none of the other applications detected (highlighted in orange below). Log file attached.

I have also re-run HIJACK THIS. Log file attached.

Still continually getting pop-up for spyware application. Seems to reappear more when I open this SPYBOT website.

Eagerly awaiting your advice .

Have continued to run onboard SPYBOT and PC-Cillin, and used House Call from Tend Micro site (which picked up another TROJ file).

Seem to have eliminated everything, but would like a confidence check from your check of the log file.

Latest HIJACK THIS log file below, will re-run ewido if required.

hi Paul G,

looks like your doing a good job all by yourself. first could you disable spybots tea timer, then enable it after the fix.

we will use hjt, then boot into safe mode to run ewido. first check for any updates to ewido. you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a restart of your computer. chose the first option from the list: safe mode.once in safe mode run ewido.
----------------
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lich] lich.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [a3ee4366.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Paul Gibbs\Local Settings\Application Data\a3ee4366.exe
------------------
boot into safe mode, run ewido, reboot normally rescan and post a hjt log

Hi Shelf Life,

Have carried instructions as directed.

Appears as if the nasties are gone, however, still got a pop-up for anti-spyware software (mentioned x3 posts ago in orange). Perhaps this latest fix got rid of it?

Log files below as requested.

hi Paul G,

since this is a spyaxe et al clone. run the SmitRem fix (by ©noahdfear)just to be sure. youve already done most of it anyway. download SmitRem, update ewido, boot into safe mode and run them both.

Back again. Many thanks for the advice.

Log files below. However, the last few times I ran SMITREM, it didn't write a log file (??). All seems clear.

Can you offer any advice on SPYBOT Resident operation. I'm unsure about the alerts it gives every time I boot-up IE: Whether to allow registry updates to occur. Obviously want to block malware but not normal WIN XP / IE functions.

Additionally, the buttons (Close and Accept ???) at the bottom of the small window are obscured. Any fix for this?

Kind Regards,

Paul G

hi Paul G,

those logs look good to me. about spybot, to be honest i dont use it much, and ive never used its real time protection.
i spend alot of time in linux also. there has to be some info around here though. link:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=281

you could ask about the resident protection in that forum
