Hello:

Greetings from Costa Rica! Let me explain the kind of infection (Virtumonde) my notebook is undergoing:

1. Symptoms:

a) Since last May 31, the computer began to pop-up banners and open Web pages never requested. The only way to close these was through ALT>F4 keys, but many times the buffer overflowed, and the machine must be reseted.
b) Automatic updates are OK.

2. Actions performed (before applying Safer Networking protocol):

a) Yesterday, I performed a scan using McAffee and Vundo virus was found (three folds). These last were stored in a quarantine folder.
b) I could install the last Service Pack for Windows Vista (no problem with this installation).
c) Also, I ran Windows Defender.
No matter the tests above mentioned, the symptoms are recurrent.

Beside the tests suggested by Safer Networking (Kaspersky, Spybot and HijackThis), no further actions have been taken. Please, take a look at the reports inserted below. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me. :)

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Hola de la Florida en los E.E.U.U.
I am not as familiar with Vista, but I will do my best to help you clean your computer. We will use the same tool since you are familiar with it and it is the same infection. Remember to run the tools as administrator.

C:\$Recycle.Bin\ <<< delete the junk in the Recycle bin, and so you will know very little shows in the HJT log but the junk is located here: C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\ <<< in that folder in red. I am learning that the hackers do not appear to have as many places to hide as in WindowsXP?

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Hola Phil,

Glad to know you’re at the other end! :bigthumb:

Below I’m including some behaviors observed, tasks performed along with the tests (Combofix and Hijackthis), you kindly asked. In this new case, Vista has the Vista Recovery Environment (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial147.html) already installed in drive D:\.

a) Libraries invoked by Vista during Start up process that couldn’t be found:

- C:\windows\System32\wkcumjer.dll
- C:\windows\System32\RqRIbYpo.dll
b) Files in “C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\” folder that couldn’t be manually deleted:

-WPDNS (Empty file folder)
- ~ROFM_00000C78 (file – 1KB)
- FNmlknpo.ini (configuration options- 357 KB)
- FNmlknpo.ini2 (INI2 file – 357 KB)
- FXSAPIDebugLogFile.txt (txt file – 0 KB)
- opnklmNF.dll (application extension – 365 KB)
- xelpodjg.dll (application extension – 90 KB)

c) Recycle bin was cleaned with UltraSentry (http://www.ultrasentry.com/)

d) I disabled McAfee automatic detection (this includes: spam, suspicious command sequences analysis, spywares and viruses)

Muchas gracias por su asistencia.

Raymond

Thanks for the feedback, understand that I know this infection very well, having removed in many, many times the last few years. The issue is I do not know Vista and it appears the methods hackers are hiding the infection in the TIF (Temporary Internet Files) or the Temp (Temporary Files). I am not sure why combofix is not finding it, are you signing in as administrator when running combofix? It may be the files are hidden from cobmofix?
I am not sure and the tool creator will have to adjust so it finds the junk where ever it is hiding.

I personally am just a little frustrated because I have no Vista to work with (no plans to purchase Vista either) so I have no idea how the infection will respond to the methods that always work well on Windows XP. Here are where the infections were in the first Kaspersky Scan and I will show them all:
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\cskctynw.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\hpjsojyc.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\mnlvnqjk.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\opnklmNF.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\opnopmml.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\qvsnaydj.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\rdywehkr.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp0000fd9f
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp00015733
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp0002200d
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp000857b0
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp202a3912
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\ufejrbcb.dll
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\witjpvqi.dll

We could try CFScript in combofix but I hesitate because Windows sometimes has files in the temp folder that are put there by Windows and are needed. I would not want to force the deletion of everything in the Temp folder with a Script. It may be I will quit trying to clean Vista until the tools and knowledge catch up with that operating system.
I should also say in earlier systems, Vundo had the ability to morph and recreate itself, I have not seen that in Vista yet?

Let's have a go at this manually and see what happens. Understand, if a file is bad, it must go. If you have to boot to safe mode and delete it there, you see the list of bad files that were there.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< check for an update for Java, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Windows Vista: Click Start.
Open Computer.
Press the ALT key.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\Users\JACQUE~1\AppData\Local\Temp\opnklmNF.dll,c

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
May vary on Vista, navigate to:

C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\ <<< delete the contents and at least everything on the list above.

C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temporary Internet Files\ <<< delete the contents

Notes for Windows Vista users from the tool creator:
On Windows Vista that "Windows Temp" is disabled, to empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator"
Prefetch has been disabled on Windows Vista. As I'm not sure the effects that emptying prefetch on Windows Vista will have for the time being it I won't enable that function.

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7) Let's run this program now and see what it finds:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

8) Post that information and then as soon as possible run a Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) using these settings:

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here. Tell me how the computer is running.

Gracias

Hi Phil,

Thank you for your efforts. Please, keep in mind that I backed up the most important documents in this computer. Also, I’ve all the installation CD’s/DVD’s at hand, so have peace of mind if something goes wrong (thank you for your concern). Moreover, I trust in your abilities so… let’s go ahead.

According to your last requests, I performed all your directions but, looking at the last Hijackthis report (see below Hijackthis Report #3a), I found that another new suspicious (?) library emerged since the last Hijackthis #2 scanning (... I guess). Below, in the report, I highlight it in blue color. What’s your opinion, do you want I mark it for Fix too, before proceeding with step # 5?

Thanks,

Raymond

Indeed you are correct, but there are two of the vundofiles:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\Users\JACQUE~1\AppData\Local\Temp\opnklmNF.dll,c
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BM9554c07b] Rundll32.exe "C:\Users\JACQUE~1\AppData\Local\Temp\srbfgnuy.dll",s

plus the two dead lines:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

That should have removed easily. You must be sure you are running HJT as administrator.

Please follow through with all of the instructions including the MBAM scan and the KOS scan. MBAM may remove what we miss.

Start at the beginning of my instructions, add that new item to HJT and follow all the way to the end of the instruction. The HJT log, MBAM report and the results of the KOS combined will show what we accomplished and have yet to do.

Gracias

Hi Phil,

About step #5:

A) I couldn’t delete manually some of the files in the “C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\” folder.
B) Also, I couldn’t get access to Temporary Internet Files (although I logged on as Administrator) so, I had to delete all these files through the Internet Explorer browser (Tools>Internet Options>Delete…Browsing History> Delete all…)

About step #6:

Although ATF-Cleaner free up more than 32 Mb of space, reviewing the “C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\” folder, and after running ATF-Cleaner, the unmovable files remain in the same place.

About step #7:

During MBAM scanning process Windows Vista crashed and the computer resets itself automatically (a DOS blue screen with a lot of swiftly warnings). Soon after, I restarted the same MBAM test, but now in Secure Mode. This time the process finished successfully (please, see below)

At this moment I’m running KOS in the infected machine, but Kaspersky renew their site (and ActiveX controls, too), so it must download all the virus definition anew. As soon I get the KOS, I’ll post it to cross-reference the results (Note: Until now, no pop-ups or unsolicited Web pages emerge!).

Below I’m inserting MBAM Report (in Spanish...sorry) followed by Hijackthis_3b Report. Also, looking at the “C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\” folder only one file looks suspicious (xdtwfqxl.dll) but it seems "orfan", what do you think?

Many thanks for your teaching,

Raymond

Thanks for the feedback, you said:

I couldn’t delete manually some of the files in the “C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\” folder.
If this is like earlier operating sytems, for some reason Windows installs some files in Temp that can not be remove. If you force them they are always recreated during the next reboot, that being the case also with Vista, you will never get all files out of the Temp folder. Those files will always be from about the original date of startup/installation and all other Temp files are removable and should be cleaned on a regular basis.
You know now that a Kaspersky scan will show the infected files .

Scan saved at 05:32:56 p.m., on 10/06/2008 <<< looks clean of malware, looking forward to seeing the KOS results. Remember...no need to post them if they are clean which they may be if you killed all Vundo files.

Gracias

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your response. Below, I’m inserting the KOS report (Step # 8) and an infection (the “xdtwfqxl.dll”, I mentioned) was detected. But this time I could delete it manually irectly from the Temp folder, without any resistance (?). Phil, I don’t know to much about Vista (normally, I only have to connect a projector and run pictures or a PowerPoint presentations on it), but I really miss those happy days when life was simple and you only had to deal with a beautiful black screen and an elegant DOS 5.1 prompt stamped on it, and the most terrible informatics threat was the ping-pong virus.

Well, in order to be consequent with the rationale of your analysis and after remove the “xdtwfqxl.dll”file, this early morning I proceed to run another KOS (its about 65% completed now). Also, I notice that now Kaspersky doesn’t offer you the chance to choose between standard and extended antivirus database, all the KOS are extended now and only shows you a report of the infections found.

I’m waiting for this last (?) KOS, in order to post the results and see if –finally- the computer is OK now.

Saludos,

Raymond

So...you are saying you were able to delete this file?
C:\Users\Jacqueline\AppData\Local\Temp\xdtwfqxl.dll

That being the case, you computer should be clean. I can tell you this, I own three computers, Window 98SE that runs like a new computer but also rarely is taken out of the garage and two Dells, one with XPPro (my workhorse) and one with XPHome (basically new though over a year old) and I am happy with WinXp and will never purchase Vista. Before XP runs out of it's shelf life I believe a new Operating System will have been released and I also wonder if Vista will not become the ME of this generaltion? I know four folks who own it and three are unhappy. It may wind up being a bit easier to remove malware from, but it is every bit as easy for the hackers to infect,
My two cents!

If the next KOS comes back clean, let me know and I'll post some good information for you and close your topic.

Thanks...Phil

Oops, I posted eight minutes after you, remember that all of this information will not apply to your operating system.

1) Remove combofix:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Viva!!! :wav:

Finally, and thanks to you, the notebook is clean now. I agreed with you about OS. In fact, I don’t understand the logic of Vista very well. I feel much more comfortable with my mature XP Home Edition but many times, new softwares bumping you to scale the OS, too. I remember when -twenty years ago- you could edit and found any string in any hard drive only using Norton 8. Well, cest la vie!

Phil, thanks to guide me again through this job. I don’t have enough words how to acknowledge you. I’ll be writing you a PM as soon I came back from college.

Gracias de nuevo,

Raymond

PS: In Vista, in order to Run a command, you use the same Find field. This is: you click on the Start icon, and then introduce your command directly into the Start Search dialog box, followed by Enter key.
