Recurring trojan Rootkit.RunTime3/WinCtrl32

[LNR 4 Life]

After a recent malware attack, I used Spybot and Super Anti Spyware to remove most of the dangerouse objects. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get rid of this one. When I open my internet connection, my McAffee stops and cleans a trojan it calls Tcad-Crypted. A scan with SAS shows Rootkit.RunTime3/WinCtrl32, it gets quarantined and deleted. After restarting it comes right back. Also my Internet Explorer hangs up loading certain pages, Kaspersky happens to be one of them so I can't post that log. Oh, and the clock in my taskbar is stuck in 24hr mode, but if I open the time & date gump, it displays properly there.

Hi

Please uninstall Spybot for now to make sure TeaTimer won't interfere fixing. You may reinstall it after system is clean :)

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Thanks for responding. Today there was a windows update installed and when I restarted after I got a message from the malicious software removal tool that said: Spammer: Win32/Cutwail.gen/B Removed

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.


Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

Close browsers and other windows. Click fix checked.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.


Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.


Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.


Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (If available, otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK.
Under
select a target to scan
, select My Computer.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.Once the scan is complete:
Click on the Save as Text button.
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post if the AV content will fit into one post only. Post a fresh hjt log (without forgetting above meantioned ComboFix resultant log) too.


Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

If having a problme doing the above

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.
* Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings.

Ok, I think my IE might be corrupted still in some way because I still can't load Kaspersky website. It just hangs up and crashes my IE without ever loading the page.

I have to leave for work, but I will run the second on line scan you've asked for and post it's log as soon as I get home.
The only two problems I seem to be having are certain websites won't open in IE, but that could be an add-on problem since I have them all disabled atm, and my clock is still in 24hr mode, not a disaster but still annoying.

No need to run ESET scanner since Kaspersky worked :) Before we go further I'd like to make IE work.


Download the HostsXpert - Hosts File Manager (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html)

* Unzip HostsXpert - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert - Hosts File Manager
* Run HostsXpert - Hosts File Manager from its new home
* Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
* Click Restore Microsoft’s Host File and then click OK.
* Click the X to exit the program.
* Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

If that still doesn't make Kaspersky site work then I recommend to try reinstalling IE 7.

So, the problem with IE appears only on some specific sites? What sites (among Kaspersky online scanner address)? Are you able to access Windows update for example?



Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply


Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save it your desktop:
Extract it to your desktop and double-click GMER.exe
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.
