View Full Version : w2k - start any app faults explorer.exe

I am flumoxed over my sudden infection of my w2k yesterday. The evidence is that no application will execute after login (including startups)... each attempt to run any app crashes with the "explorer.exe - application error" exception dialog. Any attempt to execute any app, either via icon, or via right click on the desktop yields this error message. The only thing that functions is shutdown or reboot, lather rinse repeat. I've used this system for eight years with no problems. Have made no recent configuration changes. As alien as the sensation is, this feels like an infection.

If I "cancel" the fault dialog, it opens Visual Studio (per normal), offering me the opportunity to debug the low level. If I back out of that and close VCPP, it goes back to the desktop; all icons available, double-clicking anything yields the same fault. Same with right-click and select anything except shutdown/restart. It does allow that.

Same thing in Safe Mode. No difference, until Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt, which does let me execute command lines. I managed to get a HJT dump, copied below (this is a shoehorned in copy of hjt, not installed from the GUI). I've been through it and see nothing suspicious, except nwiz.exe (I do have nvidia video) and MSMSGS.EXE (I don't use messenger, have not attempted to undo either of these via HJT).

I have a recent ghost clone of this disk, and cabling it in (with the original master as a slave) allows me to boot as normal and access my apps and data... all looks fine (although as of the last restart, can view email in OE but new mail won't allow the focus into the body of the email, and can't mark/copy text in existing emails). In this configuration, it is running the clone as the system disk, but with pagefile.sys on the original master. But attempting to run the clone alone now results in iterative login prompts... login, delay, then login prompt again. Maybe some cross infection at work here, silly me for trying.

I attempted a system repair on the original disk via w2k install CD, seemed to have no effect. Really would like to figure this out prior to a fresh install.

I checked the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT keys for exe and .exe, they both appear unaltered.

I do have another machine on the same network, and it seems to be fine. Have not attempted to access any shares, frankly am scared to death of the next effect.

I've scoured the net looking for something to explain this and come up empty. Any assist you can give would be well received. Thx in advance.
