hi.....Here I am again...i had been thankfully helped by this forum quite some time ago, and thought I had been virus free. I was regretfully mistaken however. My laptop has had some hardware issues, and I'm trying to copy my files before my hard drive takes a dirt nap. The profile I usually use for windows is overstuffed with all my data, so I created another profile to try and copy the files to my external hard drive via msdos commands. I had been able to sign onto the the internet with the other account, the only problem being the frequent system crashes I would encounter. After creating the other account, I cannot log onto the internet to even check my email with either and I think it's because of all the stuff running in the background. If I disable my connection, my regular computer functions operate normally. It's the same thing that was happening when I sought out help here the first time. I thought I had followed my advisors instructions exactly and completed every task he had assigned. But I think now that perhaps I missed something, because i heard that if they are not eradicated totally, they can return. I am currently unable to use my own computer, so I am using a friends, so I ask you to please be patient with me as I will not be able to check my messages as often as I would like.

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

hi...I just wanted to tell you thank you :heart:and that I haven't abandoned the cause...I haven't been able to sign onto the internet, but I think I found a way around that. I can boot into safe mode with networking and log on the administrators account and sign on that way...I don't like to do it for very long because it seems to run the fan the entire time and i would hate to burn anything up. I wanted to ask you if I should run the combo fix from my usual account, or if it mattered which one i used. I will run CF as soon as I get home and try to repost a HJT log ASAP....Thank you SOOOOO much for being patient with me....

Firstly...I ran combo fix from my primary account and it hung when trying to resart the computer...I opened my task manager and did not find any of the processes you had listed...I left it alone hoping it would eventually finish on its own...but it still hadn't after about 30 min after I got the "Please wait while windows is rebooted" message. I couldn't even open task manager again and had to manually reboot with the power button. When I started up again, I signed into the secondary account (also an administrator) and the combo fix dialog box came up and provided me with a log file. Becasue I know certain infections require the computer to be rebooted, I reran the program again from both accounts. I got a log file each time but the computer never rebooted. I apologize for not including the CF log but I wasn't sure if i should post them all...or only the first and/or second one, and I didn't want to overload you with information. I did however include the HJT log. That's the secondly. I ran the program from both accts and compared the logs. I noticed a few differences. I marked those differences with asterisks. The first log is from my primay account.

WOW...I have had some major hardware issues since my last post...The very next time I turned on my computer after running CF, I got a message that said...."S.M.A.R.T. dectects imminent hard drive failure, please back up all data and run the SDD hard drive test from F2 setup" Would it be possible for my computer to be so badly infected it would cause the hardware to eventually fail?? My computer acts as if it's been possessed by evil spirits :mad:and I suppose a virus is sorta the same thing, but can they "KILL" your computer?? I would VERY much like to understand this as much as I can. Anyhow....I had saved both logs separately, but one seems to be missing, and I'm not sure which this is.

I'm in the process of backing up all my files...but should I be worried about inadvertently transferring something to either my new hard drive or new extended memory....?? I know how hard some of this stuff is to get rid of...if you ever really get ALL of it...I've transferred the majority of my most important files...pics...docs...contacts etc...I'm still copying stuff I would like to keep, but wouldn't necessarily go bonkers over losing...I'm sure I've overlooked a few things I would like to keep that are in random :snorkle: places. I plan on doing a very thorough check before I shut down my computer again...but would you suggest I continue copying everything I want to the new hard drive and then install a clean XP as I had originally planned...or should I just backup my most important info...complete the cleaning process, then continue backing up my secondary files, barring a failure of my hard drive of course...or does it really matter?? :scratch:
I don't want to misuse the invaluable help here if I can help it...

Hi

You can choose if you like to continue cleaning.

You can't backup everything as you are infected, just the most important stuff.

If you backup everything and restore them, you will get re-infected.
