:)Hi..I'm a musician (female) and a computer idiot..I figured the Tavern would be the best place to advertise that after a couple of virtual drinks..I'll get to the real ones later.

Fascinating software this Spybot, just started using it and I'm highly impressed with this team. Tried acouple of other products but all they seemed to do was add more problems. Spybot is the only one that hasn't.

Well..every forum needs at least one computer idiot to ask the really stupid questions and I don't mind if you dont..:greeting: so I'm gonna hang around and see if I can get edumacated on this here stuff :D:

Gem~

Thank you Eric!..I do have one prob..I've run Spybot (with instructions) and it now tells me I'm "clean" (green) and have run CWshedder which says the same...BUT..I usually always run AOL as a browser and never IE ..but i keep getting full page ads from IE (when running AOL) for everything from John Deer tractors to spyware programs (nothing sexual ..yet) ??? any idea..??

On Spybot I signed up for Beta tests AFTER this continued..and I turned off my "system return" thingy just in case..I also have "HiJackThis" but have no idea what is good or bad?

Gem, I must warn you... DO NOT turn off System Restore in attempt to remove an infection!

What is your OS? Is your AOL browser updated?
What version of Spybot are you using (HELP>ABOUT)?

The AOL browser tends to use the same codes as IE, so technically it's no different than running IE itself.

Mozilla Firefox tends be safer and faster than IE. I would suggest you give a try.

One question. Do you experience pop-ups only during a AOL browsing session? Do you experience it when there is no online activity?
--

Do you have a firewall turned on? What about an anti-virus?

!ok..I looked again to uncheck it and it was already unchecked ..I probably didn't do it right the 1st time lol, but System Restore is enabled. I did that because I thought you were suppose to before running spybot? But I'm not sure.

What is your OS? Microsoft Windows XP Home edition
Version 2002
Service pack 2
76477-OEM-0011903-00102
Computer: Intel[R]
Pentium[R] 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM

Is your AOL browser updated?
I haven't checked for an update but I never refuse one when it is offered, I don't remember the last time that it was?

What version of Spybot are you using (HELP>ABOUT)?1.5.2.20 latest detection update 6/11/2008

I believe I will, I get all my e-mails from AOL...what will I do there? just go to AOL to read them?

One question. Do you experience pop-ups only during a AOL browsing session? Do you experience it when there is no online activity? I never experience it offline..sometimes I do go to IE instead because it gets to some places quicker and the pop up activity is about the same there. I go to 2 main music sites Boss Central and Soundclick forums and some times I get popups in the middle of reading a post? but never when I'm making one..I've been a member of these sites over 3 years and have never seen this before..just started happening last week.

Do you have a firewall turned on?yes..it is the one that comes with AOL I think?
What about an anti-virus? it's partial coverage on AOL but this computer has been running AVG since a new hard drive was installed about 2 years ago.

I won't attempt to do anything until I hear from you and thanks..these are full page popup ADs ..and they vary in frequency..I can go for an hour and not get one and then all of a sudden it's like 3 or 4 within ..say 7 to 8 minutes? really weird.

Also I checked that the Windows firewall is 'on' (checked) and I'm also using a Laptop going thru a D-link router (DI-624 wireless) that isn't used often but the main PC is hooked to a Webstar (by Scientific-Atlanta,inc) modem. Hope that helps.Oh ..I think everything is set to default?

Gem, this will be a long response :cowboy::

Just a rule of thumb, it is not necessary and it is not required to disable System Restore prior to running a Spybot-SD scan. Also, it is not good... just in case you catch a "baddie", you cannot restore to a "good, known point".

Your Spybot seems to be updated and fine. DID SPYBOT DETECT ANYTHING?
--
AOL Browser is no different than the IE browser. Have you given Firefox a test yet?
You do not have the necessarily use AOL Browser to check your mail. Any browser will do.

mail.aol.com

I don't believe AOL supports Anti-virus anymore. I recall it was powered by Kaspersky but now it's discontinued.

A firewall on is better than no firewall.
Is AVG updated? The latest version is AVG 8.0.
------------

This is the problem, I'm concerned that your computer may be showing a sign of infection. Random pop-ups showing across your desktop is not normal everyday behavior.

Question is that does Spybot detect anything?

yes it detected 21 things (whatever they were ) the 1st time... and I deleted them.

I tried Firefox once a couple years ago but didn't undersatand it very well, I'll give it another go.

as I said ..it detected 21 things in red the 1st time..the second time I ran it was all green, cookies mostly..so I dunno?

Were all of them cookies, Gem ; )?

Can you give some examples of the entries that Spybot found? If you can't find it go the RECOVERY Tab. However, do NOT recover anything unless you want to bring that specific entry back.

When was the last time you performed a full virus scan (AVG)?

When was the last time you performed a full virus scan (AVG)?
AVG is schduled to perform a scan twice daily (full) once in the morning and once in the afternnoon. (4 pm I think?)

When do we get a bartender in here?

I definitely owe you a drink:present:

 A word-for-word name of the entry in red in the RECOVERY TAB will do.

I see that that previous Spybot-SD scan came up clean. Are you still experiencing pop-ups?

Just as a opinion, running a full scan every two days is fine. Running two scans a day might put a strain on your system.

With that done... does AVG report anything?

I'm still experining pop ups..AVG reports trojans and "back door" activity and the like...but I can't give you the recovery tab from Spybot ,there's too much and I don't know how to print it out..there's no option.

Tried taking a screen shot but I made a mess of it..

Also..Im not getting email reports from replys here..I'm having to check them manualy?

In this post I told another member how to make a screen shot. To make this short... you have a infected PC.. It's the pop-ups that signify the symptons. It does matter the contents of the pop-ups... but that it is just showing without warning. Do not click on them....
