View Full Version : virtumonde - me too

rosstrafford
2008-06-15, 21:30
 I've got virtumonde and spybot isn't getting rid of it. I've looked at threads from other virtumonde victims and I sort of understand the many steps, but I'll need help as it looks like the particulars vary from one installation to the next.

I just downloaded HijackThis and produced a log, which I have pasted below...

I have also turned off TeaTimer.

Please help

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

I have also turned off TeaTimer.
TeaTimer is running in the HJT log you posted, follow these directions to turn it off:
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Read and follow all directions carefully.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for helping me pskelly - I can see there's a lot of folks in the same boat.

Sorry about TeaTimer not actually being off (I turned it off in spybot but had neglected to reboot) - it should be off now. After rebooting, spybot tried to rescan, but I stopped it. I hope that's okay. I re-downloaded ComboFix per your instructions and the log is below - - - followed by a new HJT log - - -

Thanks

Thanks for returning you information, as far as I can see this HJT log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 7:30:35 AM, on 6/16/2008 is clean of malware.

but the virus caused IE to bail out when submitting
If you are having an issue with Internet Explorer, I will know that better if you post the message word for word so I can research it. See this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx

Provide any error messages you receive from Windows the same way.

Thanks

I can't give you word-for-word, because I can't get it to fail again - but it was a "can't display the requested page" sort of error - so it might not be the malware after all. Now I'm responding from my office, so I can't do any more installs, de-installs, scans, etc for a few hours.

Later I'll play with the IE settings described in the link you provided. However, I normally use firefox instead of IE, but I de-installed it when I thought it might have been connected with the adware problems. When all is clean, I will re-install firefox again. By the way - I really like the "no scripts" add-on in firefox - but I'm on a relatively new machine, and I didn't get around to installing that yet - I suppose that might have prevented this infection. :red:

...

Meanwhile, all else appears in order. :)

I did not yet re-scan using spybot, but I assume that is my next step. I will do a new scan when I get back this afternoon - unless you tell me I need to do something else first.

By the way, the virus kept turning off my automatic windows update and the real-time parts of my aniti-virus protection (PC-cillin installed by DELL).

The automatic windows update appears to be staying on now.

I did not yet turn PC-cillin real-time protection back on, but will after this is all clean. How do you rate PC-cillin? I can get Norton from my employer if you tell me it's better.

Thanks for that feedback, we will do our best to clear all minor issues as we move towards resolution of the malware issues. At this point, this is the next bridge we need to cross.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Sorry I missed your 10:02 AM post. Malware does mess with many settings, sometimes a repair or reinstallation of the Operating System is required to fix the damage. The tools (created by members of the malware community) are great but mostly concentrate on removal of malware and not repairing the damage it has done.

As far as security programs, I will post information from some experts in the security/malware removal business and you can see what they have to say as we finish.

I personally use AVG 8 (free) volunteers make a lot less $$$ than hackers do:clown:

Thanks....Phil

I installed RC - I have the XP re-install disk from DELL so I installed it that way (so some of your instructions didn't make sense).

I have attached a new CF log and a new HJT log

If you use Windows XP and do not have the Windows CD, ComboFix includes a method of installing the Windows Recovery console by downloading a file from Microsoft. To install the Windows Recovery Console when you do not have the Windows XP CD, please follow these instructions:

These instructions remove combofix from your computer:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
