I breifly described some symptoms and gave a member here specifics about what I'm running (OS) in this thread http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=29484

the HJT version I'm using is v.2.0.2 and spybot is the latest version. These Ads and popups run the gamut from Ebay to farm equipment and many things I have no interest in , thank you for looking.

Hi Watsonica

Looks like navipromo, let's find out:

Download F-Secure Blacklight and save it to your desktop -> ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe

Doubleclick fsbl.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next

You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).

DON'T choose Rename if something was found!

Post the contents of fsbl.xxxx.log to here (xxxx= random numbers, blacklight log from your desktop)

Thank you Shaba, I did as you said and downloaded and used the application and it didn't find anything (so therefore no log) ,I've been continuing to use Spybot upon start up and it only found one thing in red today which I removed, I didn't write it down (I know I should) but it was something that came up before, next time I will. The rest came up green which were cookies and the log cache for IE I think.

Hi

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.

I downloaded dss but something keeps interupting it and it has to close. Earlier I was editing a picture for Shirley who uses (rarely) another user place on the computer and Spybot came up and I let it run..it found 21 things and 11 were in red which I removed:
AdRevolver
Blue Streak
Burst Media
Casale Media
CPXinteractive
DoubleClick
HitBox
MediaPlex
RightMedia (this one I removed from my side of the CP twice already)
Trade Doubler
Web Trends Live

Shirley's side froze up on me and I had to hard shut down the CP, I'd wanted the pictures to be on her side but ended up having to load them on mine and then ACDseePro started acting up. I haven't installed HijackThis on her desktop or I would've produced a log, should I?

I logged back on to my user side and Spybot said it has detected an important registry entry that has been changed
Category: System Startup global entry
Change: value deleted
Entry: Spybot Search and Destroy
Old data: "C:\Programfiles\Spybot_Search_Destroy\ (couldn't see the rest)

I denied the change. I dunno if I did right or not.

Please post then also spybot report :)

Hi Shaba:) Spybot reports no immediate threats but 11 problems (green)

Hi

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thank you..neither I or anyone else does business on this computer..no credit cards or banking and such...is there a way to clean this without having to reinstall or reformat everything? I use the computer mostly for music.

Hi

Yes, we can use this next:

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Delete these:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\120786.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\armian.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\ftpoiom.exe
Empty Recycle Bin.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi

That looks good :)

Still problems?

Hi Shaba:)..no problems..everything seems to be OK..popups and ADs are gone:). I think I'll only use AOL to check my Emails from now on and continue to use Firefox as a browser.

I checked Shirley's laptop to see what shape it was in (lol) her AVG was outdated (I put the newest version back in) and installed spybot..it took 2 different sessions but it got rid of 211 critical threats on that machine..thank heavens she never uses these machines for business lol . She doesn't go online with it a lot and uses it mainly for photos.

With the HijackThis files I've saved I can at least look now to see if anything suspicious changes on the PC . I also intend to keep informed of things through this forum so that maybe I won't be so naive bout all this if it ever happens again.

I really want to thank you for your expert help and patience, I'd have been lost without it.:)

Hi

That's great news :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
4) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://bfccomputers.com/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://bfccomputers.com/index.php?showtopic=1645)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place (http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html)

Happy surfing and stay clean! :bigthumb:

Hi Shaba:)..and thank you again! I downloaded all of those and followed your instructions..I was quite surprised to see that IE was already set up (with the correct settings-prompts and stuff) that you outlined.

Tony Klein's article was actually one of the first thing I read when I found this forum, I definitely wanted an idea why this all happened lol.

I'll have a lot of studying to do on all the apps but it'll be worth it to be able to get back to playing music for a change instead of slaving over this PC! lol..

Will also make a stop by "Malware Complaints" ..these hackers are nothing but ..dare I say..knowlegable thieves and criminals..that's all I can print without cussing from the top of my lungs (lol) and they should be getting all of the attention from the authorities that they really deserve.

Yanno..the crackdown on kids trading music legally or otherwise is one thing..but they're ignoring an industry of dangerous theives that have the potential to destroy lives..let alone the internet. And again..I must thank you for all you've done and I thank the forum members as well.:)

Gem~ <(that's actually my name but somebody spelled it "Jim" when adding me to this PC..I just never bothered to change it lol)
