Hijacker - relinked to dr.webservicehosts.com

Hi,

at first: I'm posting this for a friend who's system has been hijacked and by that isn't able to access any other websites via IE besides dr.webservicehosts.com. So, he isn't able to download any software except for asking another person to do it, burn it on a CD and pass it over. I'm too far away for direct help. So, it might last a couple of days before I can post the reaction of his system on your suggestions. Sorry for that!!

According his info Spybot had been run daily before the hijacking happened, but after he had no access to the web anymore Earthlink support asked him to remove any security software to gain access for his email client (Outlook Express) at least. So, in the meantime Spybot isn't installed anymore. Instead of an online viruscheck, which wouldn't work because of the relinking, he installed Kaspersky AntiVirus 5.0, was able to update it and ran a complete system check before finally running HijackThis.

Hello Dex and welcome to the forum. First I would like to suggest you use Add Remove programs to uninstall this program: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe see the links:

HJT does not have a folder to store logs and backups in safely. Return to C:\Program Files\ and make a new folder called HJT, move the log and HJT.exe into that folder, it will look like this: C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe


I would first like to thank Atribune for the fix and Trevuren and any others who helped with it. Please follow the directions carefully.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad . Make sure to work through the steps in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fix.
Download DSRFIX©Atribune from HERE (http://www.atribune.org/downloads/dsrfix.zip) onto your Desktop.
Unzip and EXTRACT the files to your Desktop.
The program creates and names the new folder to house the files.
DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download Cleanup from Here (http://cleanup.stevengould.org/) (Alternate site if the above is not working Go Here (http://www.spywareaid.com/index.php?file=showsoftware&id=1))

A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
Click OK
DO NOT RUN IT YET

CLOSE INTERNET EXPLORER, if it is open
Open the folder dsrfix
Double click on the dsrfix batch file( the one with the little gear in it )
Once dsrfix has completed it will close on its own

Please restart HJT, put a checkmark next to the following items, and with all windows closed except for HJT, click “Fix Checked” and EXIT the program.

Once its done, close the program.

REBOOT your system.
Please restart HJT and post back a fresh HJT log for review.

OK Dex, your friend has a nasty infection and infected computers tend to attract other infections. I suggest you make your friend aware of this and suggest they keep the computer offline as much as possible until they are cleaned up.

Hello Dex, your friends HJT log sure looks a lot better. There is one line of clutter I would like to remove. I think a good cleaning is in order, If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

This line as I said is clutter and you may remove it now if you wish:
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
