View Full Version : virtumonde -please help
ive picked up the virtumonde virus :( spybot detects and removes it and will evetually clean it from the system after a few goes in safemode. however, it keeps coming back. when i reboot and then start IE or firefox i get something trying to change the registry, which i keep on denying but it returns immediately.
I've read all the intro stuff on here and tried all i can, so can someone please help me?

While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
Do this first...Important
Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a new Hijackthis log.

One of the infections you have is the SDBot worm, this is what we need to do.
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

This tool needs to be run from Safemode to be effective so download it to your desktop then boot to Safemode to run it
To Enter Safemode
Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

actually i do have one more question. I'm running spybot (teatimer disabled from earlier), spyware blaster and spywareguard. plus my mcafee virus scan. it seems a bit overkill, what bit can i get rid of, or is it best to leave it all running?

Your call on what to keep, our suggestion is to keep Spybot Search and Destroy but keep the TeaTimer disabled if you keep Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard. I would keep both SB & SG but make sure the TeaTimer is disabled or they may conflict.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs
Install Spybot Search and Destroy, check for updates and run a can about once a week, be sure after you update to go to the Immunize folder and run it, right now its blocking 1000s or bad sites from installing malware. Do not enable the TeaTimer when you set it up or it will conflict with the next two.
Spyware Guard, just install it, nothing to run or update, it just sits in the background blocking bad changes to your system
Spyware Blaster Written by the same fine folks that wrote SG, no scans to run but you need to check for updates a few times a month and enable all protection, this is another program that blocks bad downloads and sites.
IE SpyAd keeps an eye on your system for changes and blocks them, no scan to run but update it about every other month or so.
Malwarebytes You installed the free version which is more than adequate, check for updates and run a scan a few times a month
ATF Cleaner This will empty out all your temp files and Temporary Internet Files that do build up and tend to bog down your system.
Windows Updates Make sure you have your system to download and install them automatically, you can find that option in the Security Center in the Control Panel.
I know this sounds corny but keep in mind that after installing all these free programs that the weakest link in the chain is the person sitting behind the monitor, so practice safe surfing, don't open attachments from emails or people you don't know. Stay out of porn sites, there a hotbed of nasty infections. Don't download any cracked or illegal software, there all loaded with malware. Don't use any file sharing programs like Limewire and the like, you never know whats going to be attached to the music or video file you download. Don't download any registry cleaners or any programs that pop up offering you a free scan because they say your infected, your not but you will be when you accept the scan. Be wary of a site asking you to download a codec to view the site properly, some are legit but some are not, google the program first before you download it.

I installed and updated all the programs above, and then did a spybot scan which has thrown up 1 entry of virtumonde. The infected file is C:\windows\system32\opnnno0i.dll

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
C:\windows\system32\opnnno0i.dll
Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Post the OTMoveIt log and lets make sure that file is deleted
I had a warning about the file not being able to be moved when i clicked "move it".

You should be ok now. The actual infection is gone, but these infections most times write bad files all over your system . Just that one file by itself would have not caused you any issues but its good its gone.
You can go here and delete that file from OTMoveIt
