I'm going to apologize in advance for asking about Virtumonde. It seems like that's all everyone asks about all day, and I'm sorry my case probably won't be more interesting. So, as opposed to wasting more of your time with buildup, here's my HiJack This information.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

All logs should be copy/pasted into topic and not attached unless requested by helper in that format.
You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is BADLY out of date and likely why you are infected, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

ThanksAlright, Java should be updated now, and I uninstalled the "Viewpoint Media Player". ComboFix frightened me with it's 1 in 100 failure rate, but I've clearly come through it. So that's some good news, at least. And my computer seems to be running smoothly, though I obviously won't celebrate until you confirm celebrations are indeed apt for the situation; you're the pro here.

Here comes combofix:

Please do not quote my instructions, it's a waste of space, I know what I said and you can scroll back if you wish to see.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{177BDEB1-0C70-4CBE-950B-00D0A41B1A9E}]

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post reports)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some items may be gone, removed by the CFScript)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the combofix log from CFScript, a new HJT log and some feedbeck. How is the computer running?

Thanks...Phil

I messed around for a while to make sure the computer was running smoothly, and it is. Very smoothly, actually.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, that sounds good, just a little more to do then, this is the next bridge we need to cross.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Huzzah, correct?

Correct:bigthumb: I personally believe Microsoft should be installing it by default, here is some information.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
RC may come in real handy in an emergency.

This will remove combofix which does not update.
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Let's get a look at one more good malware scan and I'll get you on the road.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Thanks

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. There's not really any good excuse, especially considering it was I who came here for help, so I won't bore you with any. Hopefully you'll still see you're way to helping me. That'd be swell. :D

Here's the log:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. MBAM picked up more junk we missed. We can run more scans if you wish but I suggest you make sure your resident programs like Ad-Aware and Avast4 are up to date and run. I will post information from experts, but I also suggest you have at least one spyware program running in realtime. Microsoft makes this one available free:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx

Some good information for you:

I like it.
I like it a lot.

I also deleted my System Restore points and made a new one, I'll defrag after I post this. It's been a long time since I've done that.

I've also installed the Sunbelt Personal Firewall. I was going to go with the Microsoft one, but then it said it was bundled with Vista, and I decided everything associated with Vista was also associated with genuine crappiness. I mean, that's what I've heard, anyways.

Thanks for all of the help, you've saved my computer.

Thanks for that feedback, I have not used the Sunbelt product but it has a good reputation for that price. Sunbelt is located here in my hometown of Clearwater, Florida: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/
Remember, like antivirus protection, you only want one firewall running, so make sure the Windows firewall is turned off in the Security Center.

Safe surfing:eek:

I live in Florida too.
Saint Pete.

If I stood on my roof and shouted "Thanks for fixing my computer, Link!", you'd probably hear me.
