I got bit by virtumode too. Spybot detected it and said it removed it. I am running symantec AV and that doesn't find it, but after each restart some process trys to write to the registry to register some bad dll "rdvncdkl.dll" (teatimer shows it, but that file does not exist on my system). I think the "bad" dll is C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGywVNd.dll but I can't delete it because it is in use and can't figure out which process is using it.

Before you ask this machine is a laptop that is occasionally used for work (you can probably tell by all the processes). I spoke with the IT guys and after a couple of days they gave up and told me the only solution is to reformat  Those guys are cluless.

Any help would be appreciated:

Hi

After reading your description I assume this is a personal system that you use sometimes for work. If things are not like that then you have to ask permission to follow the instructions below.

Please uninstall Spybot for now to make sure TeaTimer won't interfere fixing. You may reinstall it after system is clean :)

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Well I downloaded combofix to the desktop and ran it. It seemed to delete some infected dlls. When it finished it rebooted my computer. Now every time I log into windows it logs me right back out. I tried to boot from the "Last known configuration" but same problem, I can log in, but I logged right back out. Same thing happens when I try to boot into safe mode.

I am trying to figure out how to get to a prompt to get some data out.

I tried to boot in safe mode and still the same problem. Even if I try to log in as administrator I am still logged off right away. I also tried to boot from the last known configuration and that still did not work. Oh and trying to boot "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" gives me the blue screen of death.

Looks like i'm toast.

Hi

Sounds quite weird. Please try to do repair installation (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm). You'll need XP cd for that.
