View Full Version : Which one of you gave me Virtumonde? j/k
I'm sure I did it all by myself :(. I usually don't run into spyware. Especially something that's this hard to remove. So far I've just ran Spybot S&D a ton of times and my virus scanner. They seem to have gotten rid of everything except Virtumonde.dll. Anyway, I decided I should try this first since you guys seem to help so many others out. I didn't want to resort to anything drastic on my own and mess it up even worse.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [b]Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget to do this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

I downloaded the ATF cleaner and ran it. I tried downloading ComboFix from the first link and it won't run. Says something like "This is not a proper program." I would run it again and get the actual text, but this file is acting very strange. I thought to just delete it and try to download from the other link. However, it says the file is in use by another person or program.
Could any remaining bug have hijacked this file to try to stop me from cleaning everything up? Or did something malfunction and I just need to find a creative way of deleting this file?

Just drag Combofix to the trash and download a fresh copy , then boot to Safemode to run it.
To Enter Safemode
Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

It says I cannot delete the file because it is in use. I have no programs running that would possibly be using it.
When trying to run the program it says: "ComboFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
Boot to Safemode with Network Support, then delete Combofix, still in Safemode, download it to your DESKTOP, and try running it in Safemode
I tried that. Same result :(
The file has zero bytes. So maybe it just got messed up when I downloaded it? I promise I just clicked on the link.
Open Task Manager ( press Ctrl Alt Del ) and under Applications, if Combofix is running click on End Task.
Reboot your system and see if its still running
It's not running under applications, processes, or anywhere I know. The message says in use by another person or program. I've rebooted a few times. I've tried in safe mode, in safe mode on the administrator log in, everything. always says it's being used by another program.
In properties it has 0 bytes. Anyway to kill it?
I have never seen this happen before. Did you let it run or interfere with it while it was running. Sometimes it appears to be hanging but its not, its still running,
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

I never got a chance to run the original ComboFix.exe. It first said it was not a proper Win32 application. Then I tried to delete and redownload but it said I can't delete because another program is using it.
I got combofix to run. I ignored the other 0 byte files and downloaded from the second link. Renamed to ComboFix3.exe and ran it. No problems running it. It rebooted in no time. Here is the log and the new HJT log.

Looking Good :bigthumb: Glad you got it running, this program is a wonderful tool but needs to be left alone to run. It found nothing bad. Now that you have run it you can use my instructions to remove it via the run box.
Malwarebytes is the free version and yours to keep, check for updates and run a a scan once in awhile.
ATF cleaner was written by one of our own people and yours to keep also, run it a few times a month to keep your system clean of temp files and such.
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

I have updated the JRE and everything is running much smoother. I haven't had any scans pop up with anything. I've been a little cautious of doing normal stuff that require typing in passwords, but I've been playing some offline games and they are running faster for sure.
The only strange thing now are the 0 byte files on my desktop that can't be deleted. I was using Firefox 2 with No-Script installed if that might have messed something up. The first link for ComboFix would give me a 0 byte file that can't be ran or deleted. The second link downloaded the real stuff that actually ran.
Those zero byte files should be able to be removed in Safemode, give me the name of the files and and the type
I tried getting rid of them in safe mode, but it wouldn't work. Even logging into the safemode admin account and navigating to my desktop wouldn't delete them. The program was an exe, but had 0 bytes so it wouldn't run.
I got rid of them this way,
1 command prompt
2 terminated explorer.exe from task manager
3 cd desktop
3 deleted files using del ComboFix.exe and ComboFix(2).exe *
4 rebooted
Files gone. I saw something similiar to this on the McAfee website on how to run a command line scanner to get rid of hard to remove bugs.
*Note the actual combofix that ran was ComboFix(3).exe. It wanted to rename to use only alphanumerics, so I renamed ComboFix3.exe. That is still on my desktop in case I needed it again. I will remove it with the run: combofix /u when this all gets sorted out.
Thanks for your help and patients so far. This experience has taught me what little I actually know about computers. And to think I used to think I was a Commodore 64 pro back when I was 8. Things sure have gotten a lot more complicated since then. Let me know if I messed anything else up.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
