View Full Version : Virtumonde help (like many others!)
Hi there,
I have contracted the virtumonde virus. I have spent the last two days trying to get rid of it and when I do, it just comes back. I have been using Spybot, and Spyware Doctor to get rid of it. I have also ran scans using Windows Defender, Lavasoft Adaware 2008. The only two programs to detect it were Spybot and Spyware Doctor. Spybot gets rid of four cases of it, but it keeps coming back as soon as I reconnect my internet (I have cable). This thing is driving me crazy! It disables my automatic updates, I get random pop up windows and worst of all, it makes my computer slow and I can only access certain internet sites. Here is the hijack this log:

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

I have tried downloading combofix to my computer, but it comes up with an error message. It says 'Combofix.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. It offers an error report, here it is:

Give this a try, remove anything you have downloaded and then download it again from here:

You are still going to save it to your Desktop but change the name as you see in this screenshot:

It only worked in safe mode. I am even in safe mode now as the computer is having trouble accessing the internet in regular mode. Here is the combo fix logfile:

Hi Adam, thanks for returning your information, I need to see the HijackThis log in Normal Mode. It is not a good idea to go online in Safe Mode, you have no security running.
You can give this a try.
- boot up in safe mode
- bring up taskmgr (alt/ctl/del)
- Select file: either use the browse button to get to this path and double click on msconfig.exe or type the entire path in by hand
C:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe
This will bring you back to msconfig screen.
- From there you can select the boot.ini tab and unselect the /SAFEBOOT check box.
- Restart your PC and you should be ok
Post a new HJT log once in Normal Mode.

Thanks for the HJT log, read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

The computer seems to be running pretty well again. Automatic updates are staying on as is my firewall. I'm able to access all websites and I don't seem to be getting random popups. I still think the computer is slightly sluggish, but it might improve after a reboot (I've only just gone online after finishing the procedures you have given me). Am I clean yet?

Okay, I uninstalled the old version of java and then installed the latest version. I then put the windows xp disc into my computer and installed the recovery console. I was going to post C:\*CF-RC.txt*, but it doesn't appear to be there. I did a search for it to no avail. Does this file only come up if you install recovery console via combofix? As I said, I downloaded it via the windows xp cd. Is there a log somewhere else that I can access?

Adam, you did not read the directions:sad: if you use Windows disk, you do not need the combofix method.
If you use Windows XP and do not have the Windows CD, ComboFix includes a method of installing the Windows Recovery console by downloading a file from Microsoft. To install the Windows Recovery Console when you do not have the Windows XP CD, please follow these instructions:
It is installed, that is what is important, let's now remove combofix from your computer:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the infected System Restore files:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
That should have clear the items in MBAM, please run a new scan and post the results.
Let me know how the computer is running also.

Hey! I did read the directions: I knew I wouldn't need the combofix method, but I thought I still needed to post the log you asked for! Hahaha! Oh well, it's all installed now.
Now, I have a confession to make which you may spank me on the wrist for! I deleted combofix off the desktop just this morning, not realising that this would delete the program, thus, the uninstall thing you asked me to type in the runbox didn't work! I hope this won't mess things up. :oops:

Oh, I forgot to answer your question (how's the computer running). It seems to be running a little quicker now. When I click on something from the start menu it's not hanging there for 2-3 seconds like it was when it was infected. The programs tend to be less sluggish. Clearing that system restore thing seemed to definitely clear things up a bit.

I don't think deleting the program removed the quarantine? Delete this folder if it is still there:
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine
I can't get information on these, if you don't know them, use HJT to remove them.

Hi Phil,
The jinitiator registry entries pertain to a java fuelled program to access a student database from the university that I work at. I access the program via the web browser and it pops up a window where I access the database. Could this be causing vulnerabilities in my system (I'm suspicious of java stuff now!)? I don't have to access the databases from home, but it's handy sometimes when I'm grading papers to know the student faces.
Oh, and thanks for all the extra info regarding slow computers and keeping my computer infection free. I just read through the first link you posted and it was extremely helpful. I have just stripped back a whole heap of startup entries that weren't necessary, I've deleted my restore points and am about to run the defragmenter.

No Adam, it was lack of information and the fact I had not seen those before that had me questioning them in your HJT log. Java is fine, just keep it updated, I check when I install Windows Updates. I don't trust their updater and if you want to complain to Java about something that would be the item. It has been buggy for a while. If it's not going to work, why make us think is will, a lot of folks got into trouble like that, thinking Java would update for them:sad:
