Need help "fixing" CoolWWWSearch

[Rocky Mtn]

I have used Spybot-S&D successfully for many years. Lately, after a regular scan, I have found "CoolWWWSearch.hjg" in red on my screen. I have tried several times to "fix" the problem, only to find it continually recurring.

Please HELP!

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This looks like a hack by Ukrainian criminals. If I am right, you have been hacked by them before.

1) Make sure your version of Spybot S&D is totally up to date and fully immunized.

2) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

3) Spywareguard: right click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program. Then choose File > Exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

4) Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

1) Remove Fixwareout from your computer, we are finished with that tool.

2) The HJT log is clean, MBAM which is a good tool, found and removed only one infected file. While no program can find everything, rather that run additional scans, I would like to see you update McAfee and run a complete system scan to see what the program you are paying for has to say, it is using a load of your resources.

:sad: Phil, I may have spoken too soon in my last reply. After following all instructions and tasks, I have since run the Spybot S&D "Check for Problems" and am STILL getting the CoolWWWSearch.hjg in red. Repeated scans and "Fixes" are not removing it.

What now ???

Before we go running off doing a lot of scans looking for something that may be an issue with Spybot, let do this. Understand the majority of issues turn out to be situations where Spybot is not up to date and fully immunized, so let's rule that out first. I just updated my version, and here is where you should be: Version 1.5.2.20 Latest detection Update 6/18/2008

I just ran a scan that came up clean and when you click Immunize, you should be showing a total of 36,707 item you are protected against.

So...check this out, make sure this is the case with you also, then restart and run a new scan and post to let me know if you still have the issue.

It seems that updating Spybot 2 Version 1.5.2.20 w/ updates to 6/18/08 - as you recommended - has done the trick ! ! ! :present:
I noticed that on my Immunization screen, it showed protection for 99,847 items (rather than the 36,707 that you pointed out). I figure the more the merrier.
I have run two Spybot S&D scans and, so far, they have come up clean.
