View Full Version : Malware prevents Firefox from downloading and running

Two weeks ago

1. I was trying to use Limewire,
2. IE came up, (which I never used) displaying pop-up ads
3. Firefox wouldn't load
4. Uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling didn't solve the no load problem.
5. I got rid of the pop-ups on IE by doing a system restore.
6. Firefox still won't load.
7. Going back to an earlier version of Firefox (2.0) didn't work either.
8. I ran Kaspersky's online scanner,Windows Defender, Ad-aware, Regscrub, et al, nothing fixes the Firefox no-load problem.

I cannot download Firefox using IE. It aborts. Using Opera I can, but FF won't load.

Any idea of what's wrong and how to fix it?

Hi

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:

Did you try complete uninstall for Firefox?

To uninstall Firefox completely, you want to clear out everything related to Firefox, e.g., the profile or profiles, add-ons and cookies.

Profile info here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder

Note:
Uninstalling Firefox does not remove the user profiles, etc. To get a truly clean re-install, it all needs to be removed...

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

In XP, the profile folder is usually located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Go to the Program Files folder and delete the
Mozilla Firefox
folder there.

After the above:

Download Firefox from its official site.
