View Full Version : Yet another victim of Virtumonde...

I picked up this lovely little thing the other day and it's been annoying at best. None of my search engines work and loading other internet pages is really sketchy, though I can load them just fine in safe mode (where I am now). I can't access my e-mail either. My AVG also picked up a trojan trying to install itself, most likely it's a part of Virtumonde. The files are Trojan horse Downloader.Zlob.XQH, and two instances of Trojan horse Generic 10.A0FZ. All three seemed to try to put a .dll file onto my computer with a gibberish title (snynkerf.dll is one), so I'm not sure what to make of it. At any rate, here's my HJT log.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, first I will mention that I am not familiar with this item:
C:\Program Files\PS TO USB CONVERTOR\CnsMin5.ico
If you are and know what it does and that it is safe, it can be returned from the combofix quarantine folder, let me know about it. If you do not know what it is, ignore this communication.
C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive\VistaDrive.exe <<< do you know what this is? See the Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=VistaDrive.exe&btnG=Search
I will remove it and you should ignore my instructions only if you are positive it is safe.
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\ <<< I run this on two computer and I am 99.9% sure that version expired on 5/31/2008. If you know something I don't know make me aware, if not here is the update link to AVG 8 FREE
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Please download, install, update and run a system scan prior if posting the next HJT log if at all possible. If not, tell me why you could not do this.
Can you assure me this is a safe program and file?
O4 - Startup: mIRC.lnk = C:\Program Files\mIRC\mirc.exe
I am concerned by these files and lack information, use this free scan to find out what they are if you do not know:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Let me know what you find:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\shc3t2j0el9l
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphc5t2j0el9l.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\phc5t2j0el9l.bmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\blphc5t2j0el9l.scr
(read and follow these directions carefully and in the numbered order)
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbrqgsax.dll
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{590284C3-DF80-490E-81A6-823F550BBD3B}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{EA74CF5C-4BB1-43C7-B1C7-07215596019D}]
Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive
Save this as CFScript
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(items may be gone removed by CFScript, not to worry)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {590284C3-DF80-490E-81A6-823F550BBD3B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbXrPfDs.dll (file missing)

C:\Program Files\PS TO USB CONVERTOR\CnsMin5.ico
I really don't know what this is, but It's probably used in conjunction with my game controller I use. Seeing as it's an .ico file, I don't think I'll worry about it too much, so I cant stay there.
C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive\VistaDrive.exe
I really don't know anything about this program other than the system icons in the folder were that of my HDD's icons; even go so far as to have the drive status bar at the bottom of the icon. I went ahead and deleted the entire folder.
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7
I had forgotten about this. Uninstalled the old version and I'm now currently downloading the new version.
Can you assure me this is a safe program and file?
O4 - Startup: mIRC.lnk = C:\Program Files\mIRC\mirc.exe
I have mIRC set up to load automatically on start up. That's all that is. I know it's safe.
I am concerned by these files and lack information, use this free scan to find out what they are if you do not know:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Let me know what you find:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\shc3t2j0el9l
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphc5t2j0el9l.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\phc5t2j0el9l.bmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\blphc5t2j0el9l.scr
I checked the .exe with the link and 5 of the services detailed it as a malware, though they couldn't agree on its actual application. The .bmp registerd on NOD32 as Win32/TrojanDownloader.FAkeAlert.DJ. Here is the .exe's scan:
AntiVir Found TR/Vundo.Gen
BitDefender Found Trojan.FakeAlert.TA
Ikarus Found Trojan.Crypt.XPACK
Norman Virus Control Found W32/Smalltroj.EXVB
Sophos Antivirus Found Troj/FakeVir-BX
One of the components of this Virtumonde was that it hijacked my desktop and administrative settings by auto-loading a desktop backround that was completely stark blue with a virus infected warning on the backdrop. That's what I suspect the .scr file is.
I will post the results of what the programs find when I get them. Thanks for responding.

Thanks for the feedback, if you find those files malware as I suspected they were, delete them. If you have a problem with any, let me know and we will use CFScript on them.
Thanks

Just finished updating AVG8 and I'm now running a virus scan. The last few times I've booted up Windows I've gotten a RUNDLL error in which I get this message: "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbrqgsax.dll The specified module could not be found."
It's probably part of this Virtumonde, though it bothers me that something is still set to start up. I'll post again when I know more/get more info.

Thanks for the feedback, we removed that file with CFScript here:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbrqgsax.dll
Likely a dead registry entry and a restart should stop the message. Let me know if it should continue. I will also know more when I see the last reports I requested.
Thanks...Phil

Alright, I've done as you asked. Here is the new Combofix log. I believe it's the right one. I couldn't remember what file name it saved itself under, but this one has no hidden file whereas the first CF log had one.

Thanks for returning your information, that is the correct log:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\CFScript.txt
Could you bring me up to date with those files you were to scan, were they removed ok?
In the HJT log, the only think I see is this:
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< needs an update, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
It appears CFScript did the job also, I don't want to move on unless I know the computer is running as it should. Let me hear from you on this.
Thanks...Phil

The system folder, .exe, .scr, and .bmp? I deleted all 4 of those entries. I'm updating my JRE right now. The amusing thing is that AVG 8.0 found a lot of ActiveX entries in my HKLM\SOTFWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ htat it labeled as Adware - most notably NewDotNet, RogueSuspect, and TitanShield. I guess it's a good thing I almost exclusively use Firefox for everything.

Put it all in the Virus Vault, I suggest you wait a week since the program is going through growing pains. After a week, empty the vault.

It moved everything into the virus vault. I just had the AVG Resident Shield pop up with this notice of threat detected:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{88f1587C-C4C6-4B03-A0BC-48FCAT61D56C}\RP2\A0000036.dll
Threat Name: Trojan horse Generic10.AQVH
Process Name is listed under svchost.exe. I don't know what to make of it.

That's System Restore, programs can find it but can't do anything with it because they are protected Windows Files, see this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx
I usually wait until last in the cleanup so it only has to be done once, they can't get out of SR unless you do a SR, then the junk gets back on the computer. These are the instructions I use to clean the System Restore files:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Hope that helps
If you think you are ready to move on, this is the next step we need to complete:
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Looks good, Recovery Console was installed correctly, here is a little information from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Remove combofix from your computer like this:
lick START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
Let me know how the computer is running now.

Oh, I figured out what Vistadrive was. It was a folder containing the icons for my HDD so they could use it. Too bad I deleted it, though. D:

You may be able to retrive those if you are sure they are safe, but it has to be done before you uninstall combofix. Let me know if you want directions.
