Read some of the previous entries, but don't seem to have the o2 and 04 HJT lines that some others were told to remove. Spybot gives me a waring with 38fd864e, and rundll32.exe"C:\WINDOWS\system32\kksav...?" and rundll32.exe"C:\WINDOWS\system32\aarnwumh.dll",b. This sucker also seems to affect my ability to safely remove Cruzer zip drive. It's turned the "drive" in driving me crazy into a short putt on a level green. Please help before I start babbling to my laptop! :clown: Below is the HJT run results. After I get rid of Virtumonde should I add both a new firewall and a malware program, as well as update to XP SP3? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

I am not seeing the infections in this HJT log, please try this:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) If you are using a removable drive, it is likely infected or may be the reason for the infection? Keep it out of the computer for now.

3) I will try to repond to all questions before we finish.

4) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe, call it artymajor.exe that will work. Hackers hide their junk from HJT and after a restart we may see the infection.

5) Restart and post a new HijackThis log.

Thanks

I found the exe code line, using misc tools and process manager, but can't figure out how to rename it. Sorry, I'm technologically challenged.

pskelley
2008-06-21, 20:03
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Open MyComputer > then C:\ > locate Program Files open that folder > locate Trend Micro and open it > Locate
the HijackThis folder and open it > point your mouse at HJT.exe and right click then choose "rename" type the name
artymajor.exe in the box that comes up then OK it. Restart and post a new HJT log. It wil now look like this:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\artymajor.exe and hopefully we will see the hackers junk.

Thanks

When I open the HijackThis folder, I get a Main Menu that offers options. I open the misc tools option, then click on the process manager, which shows me 25 running process lines. When I right click on HijackThis.exe, the entire line is highlited in blue. I can't get a rename option. If I double click either right or left, I get an error report and Micresoft closes the box and retuens me to the folder. What am I doing wrong?

Removing this infection is difficult and if we can not get past the first step which is basic computing, we are in for trouble when me move to following steps which are far more complex. I believe you need to locate someone with more computer experience to gve you a hand.

Thanks

Changed the name of the folder, and that changed the exe line. Here's the new run.

Thanks for returning your information, read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order. As you can see, we are getting a look at the junk now. How would you like to get your hands on these hackers?

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Phil,

Here are the new logs. Re: what to do with hackers, after 30+ years in the military I bet I couls get some Seal/SF teams to use hackers as aggressors in live-fire exercises at the Jungle School in FL.

Thanks for your help. BTW, I resolved the exe problem on my own. May be technically challenged, but am also stubborn!

Thanks for the new HJT log, read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

(careful to follow the directions exactly)

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pnpvkide.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\arrnwumh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\neltabxw.exe

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some items may be gone, removed by the CFScript)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the combofix log for CFScript, a new HJT log and some feedback, how is the computer running?

Thanks...Phil

Computer seems to be running fine. Do you have time to advise re: new firewall and malware?

Thanks so much for your patience and help.

Morning Lee, thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I will post links to information from experts, after you review that information, if you still have questions, post them for me and I will do my very best to give you answers.

First I will say your HJT log looks clean of malware:bigthumb: I am wondering about all of these:
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LuCallbackProxy.exe
as you can see their are ten in the log, they are not malware, but I suggest you ask Symantec why this is happening, you can contact tech support here: http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp

We have more to do before we will be finished and this is the next bridge we must cross. I want to point out that almost everytime there is an issue here it is because the member did not take the time to read and understand the instructions.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Phil,

Per Symantec, the 10 lines are live update initiators - nothing to worry about. The RC log follows. Just realized you're in Clearwater. I visit the Sarasota area in the winter - also attended the St. Pete Grand Prix ths year wth some friends. Thanks again for all of your help so far. Lee

Thanks for the feedback, Recovery Console is correctly installed and may come in very handy one day in an emergency. Here is some information from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
I personally believe that tool should have been install by default with Windows!

Let's remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

and run a MBAM scan for a double check:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Add any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

Here's the scan. Found 1 item which I deleted. Two questions. Should I install another firewall? Is there an SP3 update from Microsoft I should download, or are we finished? You've been a great help - thanks so much!

Thanks for the feedback, here is what I suggest.

1) Since malware often messes up your security programs, update your resident antivirus program and do a system scan to make sure all is working as it should be. If you have issues, contact tech support for help.

2) I have not downloaded SP#3 yet and many experts suggest waiting but you will have to make that call. Here is some information at Google:
