Hello,
Since yesterday, my computer has been acting funny. The wall paper will not show up on the desktop, and no images show up online. They only show up as little boxes that say the picture title. Quite a few things showed up when I ran Spybot. I fixed all but one, but now they are all back. Here is what it said I had:
AdRevolver
DeepDive
MediaPlex
Microsoft.Windows.Explorer
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.RegistryTools
PWS.LDPinchIE
Right Media
Smitfraud-C.gp
Virtumonde
Virtumonde.dll
Win32.Agent.gvu
Win32.Agent.icb
Win32.Tiny.abk
Zedo
If I could get some help, that would be great! Thanks!
P.S. Is it okay for me to backup my files (Word docs, etc.) right now onto a flash drive or something like that, or might that be too dangerous? Thanks!
Hi bucksandy34
You can backup documents, yes.
Please see here (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288) and post back a HijackThis log :)

I kept running Spybot and fixing everything, but Smitfaud and/or Virtumonde kept showing up, and now the computer only works in safe mode (I'm in safemode with networking right now), so I thought I should just post the HJT log:

Hi
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)
We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post

The computer is just a computer at our house, and I'm almost positive there is no sensitive information stored on it (financial info, SSN, etc.). Since getting infected, no one typed in any sensitive info online, although before the infection I had done some online banking and shopping with a credit card. Is there much risk for identity theft even if I haven't done anything sensitive since getting infected? I wouldn't be opposed to a reformat and reinstall from what I know of it. Would that then make the computer 100% safe again? Lastly, I haven't finished putting my files on a flash drive, is it still safe to do so as long as I stay off the internet?
Thanks!
Hi
Then not.
It depends on files. Pictures and documents are pretty safe to transfer.
Let's start cleanup then:
1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Hi
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/KB310994.gif
Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/rc1.gif
Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC_whatnext.gif
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Save this as "CFScript"
Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Did you copy everything from codebox to CFScript?

Hello,
I just checked the CFScript file against what you have typed in the code box (using two different laptops). It looked like I had everything in there. Should I try CFScript again?

Hi
Now it looks better :bigthumb:
Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)
Copy/paste the file below into the white Upload a file box and click Submit/Send (depends on which one you are using Jotti or VirusTotal).
C:\userinit.exe
Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.
If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/
Please do also this:
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.
Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:
1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Hello,
I think I did have an antivirus program on here before the infection, but it's obviously not there anymore so I downloaded a new one. Anyway, here are the scan results:

Hi
Empty these folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy McDonald\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache
C:\QooBox\Quarantine
Empty Recycle Bin.
All other viruses are in system restore and inactive.
I give you later instructions how to empty it.
Other than that, any problems left?

Hello,
It's pretty much back to normal. I don't have to be in safe mode anymore to get on the internet. However, pictures still aren't showing up online and neither is my desktop wallpaper. Also, when I start the computer, a black screen comes up (like the one that comes up when I choose safe mode) and asks which operating system I'd like to start up, either Windows XP or Recovery console.
Thanks!
Hi
Have you tried to go Control Panel - Display - Themes?
bucksandy34
2008-06-27, 19:34
Hello,
I went there and it said my current theme was "Modified Theme." The desktop image shows up when I first start the computer, but then it goes away and a small white square appears in the top left corner, and inside the square is a square, a circle, and a triangle. That is the same thing that shows up in internet explorer where the pictures should be.
Hi
See here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283807) and post back if it helped :)

2008-06-27, 19:39
Hello,
Ahh yep, that did the trick. I now can see images and my wallpaper.
Hi
Great :)
Any other issues left?
bucksandy34
2008-06-27, 19:46
Hello,
None that I can tell, (just the inactive viruses in system restore you mentioned earlier?).
bucksandy34
2008-06-27, 19:49
Actually, for some reason all the icons on my desktop have blue borders around them. It looks kind of like they're highlighted when they're not.
Hi
See here (http://www.entity.cc/icon-label-transparent.php)

Hello,
I tried with the box both checked and unchecked, and the problem is still there. It's not just color around the words of the icon, but like a kind of border around the whole thing. It probably isn't much of a big deal, and it was there before the infection I think, but I thought I'd see if you had any ideas.
Hi
Can you please take a screenshot and post it here?
bucksandy34
2008-06-27, 20:18
Hello,
I've taken the screenshot, but what's the best way to post it?
Hi
You can attach it.
Attach files - Manage Attachments

2008-06-27, 20:36
Hello,
I had to put the picture file in a compressed folder so it wouldn't be too big to attatch.
Hi
Well they are not transparent for some reason.
I can re-direct you to some windows forum for that issue if it's OK?

Hello,
That sounds good, thanks! Should I do anything about the inactive viruses in system restore yet?
Hi
Yes, just see my instructions from below :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
I recommend this (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?) place for remaining issue.
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
4) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Next we remove all used tools.
Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
