ok,
I have windows xp sp2 (sp3 won't work if I update it.)
all was well until I updated IE7 with the latest autoupdate and i then could no longer access the internet even though netscape could connect as well as any other "internet program" I use. I was able to use IE7 in safe mode with internet access but not in "normal" administrator account. I only have one user on the computer...
I went through the windows support and after doing all that they recommended (mainly unistalling the ie7 update to be precise to get IE7 to work again) they recommended i come here to clean up a possible malware issue.
at present i have uninstalled the IE7 update to be able to use IE but now I can't acccess the tools-internet options menu since i "don't have admin rights" which i obviously do.
I have since used spy bot and got rid of any red issues and then ran hijack this
..attached is the log file below. i THINK that covers all that i did.
I hope you guys can point me in the right direction. Let me know if you need any other info.

ok,
good/bad news... the explore.exe file was NOT present in the sytem32 folder. I unhid everything and still couldn't see it. So i downloaded stopzilla and then ran scan. I had vundo and vundo.j it seems to remove it ok. Ran vundofix and it said no files found. So i ran stopzilla gain and i had anohter vundo infection.
(i had a slight problem running stopzilla this morning while islept..power went out so not sure if it did full scan)
i redid hijack and got the results below.
so to sum up..
good news.. no explore.exe in system32 folder
badnews.. no explore.exe in system32...so why iwould hijack show it has it...arghhhh
anythoughts?

Yes, my first thought is why did this member ask for help if they wanted to do it themselves?
I do not request tools (no matter how good they may be) that I am not familiar with so I can read the results. These are the directions I posted for you:

John, help me out here a little, in the first log I say Symantec as your antivirus and CounterSpy and an antivirus program and Zone Alarm as your Firewall (Windows FW should be turned off)

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).
3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Explore.exe <<< delete that file ( you can scan it first to make sure it is the trojam, but I have no such file on my Windows XP computer)
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
I understand you said it was not there, possible it was running from Prefetch or a Temp folder (hackers don't always play fair)

No folder for HJT, would you delete this copy and follow these instructions to put HJT in a safe location. You can cut/paste logs and any backups and place them in the new HJT folder.
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop

Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. <<< just close the program for now.
Let's have MBAM take a look for malware:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Ok it seems to be better but for one oddity
after a while internet explorer can't connect to the internet (as well as netscape) but can access internet using "firstclass" software.

I did not set the file like this. How shall we check the hosts.
AS well after opening up IE7 i go to tools menu and select internet options and it still says I don't have rights to modify it.

A window opens, choose Notepad from the list and hit OK.
A notepad document opens, copy the contents to here.
Since that may be a large file, you may zip it and attach it.
Zip the file first > http://www.cs.sfu.ca/CC/125/ggbaker/instr/xpzip
Post Reply > Manage Attachments > Browse to that file > Upload

I really don't care if you keep it or not, but I will not be using it and it might slow your computer?
AS well after opening up IE7 i go to tools menu and select internet options and it still says I don't have rights to modify it.
Could you post the error message and any error messages word for word so I can try to research it. Not sure about that, could be damaged by the malware and may require a repair or reinstallation. Once I know something in the hosts file is not the reason, I'll see what we can to.
Could you try your Netscape browser and see how it runs.

I'm going to uninstall all the java programs and reinstall the latest. For future reference should you always uninstall the old java before upgrading to the new?

the error when going to IE7>tools>internet options on IE7 is

I have been using netscape for this forum so netscape works fine..except the other day when i couldn't connect. happened twice yesterday. Needed to reboot to connect..even though i had access to internet via "firstclass".

For future reference should you always uninstall the old java before upgrading to the new?I do, I don't use the buggy Java Scheduler, I check Java before I install Windows Updates, that way I only have to restart once. This is usually once a month recently.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte
rnet Explorer\Control Panel
But i did find in the root of
HKEY_CURRENT_USER an entry that says "deathtime" with a value of "2"
should i just delete this ?

I have no idea what that might be and do not like to advise folks to remove stuff from their registry period let alone something I do not know. Here is some information:
