View Full Version : Strange ".t" Files By the Thousands

I have discovered thousands of gibberish named files with a .t files extension on two of my machines as well as remote storage devices:

Macbook Pro
Running Windows XP SP2 through Parallels 3.0

Dell Insperion P3
Running Windows XP SP2

I have tried to research this problem for months now and have found nothing besides a few posts... one thread here that was never closed so I'm going to try to get you all the info that I can. Lets figure this little booger out.

What I have done:
Purchased a copy of Norton 360... installed... updated... ran... found and fixed:
w32.hllp.sality
w32mixorinf
infostealer

...then spend the last 2 weeks reinstalling all the software that 360 wrecked through the some sort of registry slaughter. I'm not angry any more at Norton 360 although I should still be. :lip:

I just ran Hijack This on my Macbook based XP SP2 and found the following:

I'll add the log from my desktop when I can... as that machine seems to be more infected with the .t files than my newer Macbook Pro workstation... but this machine does have them by the hundreds.

I'm not having any problems with software or performance... but I seem to find these ".t" files in major program directories and sometimes get a windows error on program launch:

Let's say that I'm launching YIM or Illustrator... windows will give me a "this software as failed to... with the software being "insert giberish name here.t". The gibberish .t file names are just various numbers and letters with the ".t" extension. I'm not going to attach one for examination... newbie but not that dumb. ;)

I did notice that when 360 was running and I would open a directory full of hundreds of these little .t bastards... they would gray out as if they were invisible and Norton would make them disappear as I selected them... don't know what it did with them... as 360 was just flailing around like a dead fish at that point in time... not giving me any answers or control.

I'm afraid that the virus is turning my current files into these .t files... and with several remote drives full of years and years of design work... this virus could turn my working files into zombies. Yes I have found these on external hard drives stacked full of live working files. Simply terrifying.

Thank you in advance for giving this malware newbie some help in this potentially fatal infection. Email me or respond... I'll be watching and waiting to provide any additional information.

Thanks again!
Brian
