View Full Version : Yet ANOTHER Virtumonde infection

pchris15
2008-06-25, 23:36
The infection started with a popup that would appear after i opened any subfolder (or clicked the back button) on my computer. the message would read something like "Warning 'Username,' your computer may be infected with a virus and we recommend you download this antivirus software... etc, etc, etc. clicking yes or no on this alert would close it an open a web browser (firefox) that made it look like it was scanning my computer - popup page entitled IE AntiVirus.
Spybot finds DeepDive and Virtumonde.dll but regardless of what i try and do, all attempts to remove have filed. the dang things just keeps comming back and keeps downloading more and more addware and the computer is getting worse. now it's causing random crashes connected, OR disconnected from the internet. please help as soon as possible.

here is a hijackthis logfile from my computer.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

You have a Vundo infection and they are bad enough, but you also have this Backdoor Trojan: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupdte.exe <<< have a look at the Google on this one:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=msupdte.exe&btnG=Google+Search
I think it is this one:
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/118657442262309642-132687456/MSUPDTE.EXE.html
but to be safe you should be reviewing this information:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe, call it pchris15.exe. Hackers hide their junk from HJT and after a restart we should be able to see the junk.

3) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

thank you for the reply. i followed your directions and here are the results. i would like to note that i have still no ability to access any search engines or any of my email accounts, but instead see a loading screen for forever. You are surely welcome and I do appreciate it that the directions are being followed. That is a must! Please understand as I said here:

This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.
and these infections rarely come out as fast as they got in. I plan to spend no more time with this than is necessary, many folks are waiting for help.

1) You may remove SDFix from your computer, it has done it's job.

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

i'm afraid any download links no longer work from certain sites, and www.bleepingcomputers.com is not accessible from this computer's web browsers any longer. i hope this is ok, but i downloaded the file from this post on another computer and transferred it to my desktop via jump drive. i will list the results after they have completed.

sUBs, the creator of the tools for reasons of safety, has combofix expire every so often. The new tool is in place and available at the link I posted. I apologize for the minor delay.

Please use this link:
Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe <<< here

Thanks

ComboFix ran correctly i think. it seemed to stop and not return my desktop icons, so i ctl+alt=del and then restarted my computer from there.

here are the ComboFix logs and the new HJT log.

thanks for the quick response, but unfortunately the link is still unreachable from this infected computer. but it is reachable from another one so there's no fault on your end.
if you ask me, it seems like all outgoing requests on the infected machine are being blocked. this is why hyperlinks, search requests, and e-mail accounts are inaccessible. but i'll let you be the judge of that :)

Thanks for returning your information, looks like it ran twice. Did you review the tutorial I posted with it so you would know what to expect. At times it can take around 20 minutes before it completes. Please read and follow these directions carefully and in the numbered order.

if you ask me, it seems like all outgoing requests on the infected machine are being blocked. this is why hyperlinks, search requests, and e-mail accounts are inaccessible. but i'll let you be the judge of that Hard to judge, the hackers are constantly changing how their junk infects computers and we always seem to be a few steps behind. Might have to do with their unlimited resources. Here is just a little infomation.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

(follow the CFScript directions carefully)

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\waiexxwu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vivipfii.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gavxwasd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\byXrQgDv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmcgefqe.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tsirgcwq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qoMdBTki.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gmpmemjmxy.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\nkjozopa.dl

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\yayApqpO]

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the combofix log from CFScript, a new HJT log and some feedback, how is the computer running.

Thanks

the ComboFix script had an error at the beginning "could not load" and continued to run with an error at the end. not sure if the script took, but it gave me a log at the end and there was no reboot required.

there was no O20 - Winlogon Notify: yayApqpO - yayApqpO.dll (file missing) in the HJT menu, so i guess it had already been removed.

as for the web browsing, I CAN DO SEARCHES ONLINE AND CHECK MY E-MAIL NOW! i'm so happy i could cry. i do hope that everything is close to being in working order. we'll see what happens after a reboot of the machine.

here are the logs you requested.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you had a very infected computer but your HJT log looks much better, we still have work to so so stick with me.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\ <<< update your Java program, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Do you know what this item is?
O23 - Service: Raln60tipe - Parallel Technologies, Inc. - (no file)

This is the next important bridge we must cross.
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

i think the Parallel Technologies should have something to do with my motherboard drivers or something. i did a little research and came up with nothing.

i went ahead and installed the recovery console from my XP disk so just let me know the next step from here. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, remove combofix like this.

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Let's have MBAM take a look for anything we might have missed.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your logs, MBAM found a little junk, but mostly identified stuff in the HJT Backups. Here is information about that area.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#HTRestore
HJT places anything removed with the tool in this "Backups" area and you can restore or delete from there.

The HJT log still looks good, how is the computer running?

Some good information for you:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
