View Full Version : Zlob.DNSChanger infection.
Hi Guys,
I've been trying to get rid of a Zlob infection, but it's clearly beyond my competence, and I would be most grateful for some help with it.
Spybot has detected it this morning, although the past few days it didn't find it, even though I know it was there.
I run Norton, Spywareblaster, Spybot S&D, Winpatrol, Windows Defender, AdAware and Spywareblaster. I've also tried Kaspersky and Malwarebytes this week. The latter found nothing, but Kaspersky did find a backdoor trojan in a folder which I then shredded with Spybot.
I seem to be bogged down with anti-malware but still getting infected; your suggestions are welcome as to the best current defense.

The last one was tough to clear, let's how this one is easier. You should keep this computer offline until you are clean to deny them access.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
Add any comments youthink will help.

Thank you for your assistance.
It was slightly problematic in that I could not get a connection after performing the tasks. I replaced the S&D hosts file, and then ran dnsbak.reg, and eventually had to reboot to get a connection.
I also noted that Norton's auto-update had been switched off, this has now been restored.
Spysweeper is also unable to check for updates, as is Windows Defender.

It was slightly problematic in that I could not get a connection after performing the tasks. I replaced the S&D hosts file, and then ran dnsbak.reg, and eventually had to reboot to get a connection.Thaks for that feedback, please be aware that the only tool we used, Fixwareout has been used uncountable numbers of times to remove this infection, but stuff does happen. This is why I posted a link to the instructions and asked you to read them.
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.There is always risk involved in installing and removing any software. Even a fix that time has shown to be useful to thousands of users, can present problems to a few or be found to have a bug in development.
As hard as I try, I can not guarantee that problems can not occur. If you have any issues with this, we really should not proceed beyond this point.

I have no problem at all with accepting any and all associated risks.
It may have just been a coincidence, with extra saturday night usage on the servers meaning no bandwith for me to log on (I'm way out in the coutryside), but I thought I should mention everything of potential importance that happens during the process.
I fully appreciate that the offending files are deep within the system and delving there can be risky.
The alternative is considerably less attractive. :)

Thanks for that feedback Matt, here is another members topic and you can see the changes we went through to clean the junk from their computer. Notice that the stuff removed with the tool then came back. Often the help of technical folks at the ISP is need to repair settings changed by the malware that our tools can not always fix. If you read the links I posted, you know the kind of scum we are dealing with.

Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

The Malwarebytes scan was clean, but I know there's something still here, ironically because of a typo in the first link of your last post.
The missing dot between forums and spybot meant the link did not exist, but rather than the standard error page, I was redirected to a hijackers search page. I quickly disconnected and closed the window.
I've read the thread you linked to now, and can see the problems faced. Given the negative scan, where next?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. At least you know what we are up against, and these are not nice folks. I am not seeing anything that looks like this infection in the HJT log. I don't recognize some of your 016-DPF's, would you look at each one and be sure you do.
Understand these hackers have been showing a difference Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) than this one: 85.255.113.90 because we recognize it as coming from the Ukraine. The hackers are now showing the number again so they have done something to make it harder to remove them. The creator of the tool (Fixwareout) will respond to this but it takes time.
Let's run a couple of tools looking for information. Don't do anything with the information, just post it.
1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Post only the C:\rapport.txt
2) Please download F-Secure Blacklight:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save to your C:\ drive.
Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
3) I also strongly suggest you get with tech support at your ISP and explain exactly what has happened. They will be able to reset your computer to the correct information. I can post manual instructions for doing so, as you read in the member link, but hesitate because the possible setting vary from ISP to ISP.

I have followed your instructions. The 016's all seem ok, I'm a photographer, and the uploaders you see are for legitimate sites I recognise.
Both of the scans were clear, logs posted below.
I followed the manual DNS resetting instructions, and found the sites had been changed to the dodgy IP addresses, now set to obtain automatically. I will contact my ISP in the morning anyway.
My concerns are: When I shut down lastnight windows came up with a security message about closing a window to protect my system, I then had to instruct it to shut down again.
Also, then and again just now, a "Microsoft Error Reporting" message appeared that I have never seen before about reporting recent errors, and it doesn't feel right to me. I have posted a photograph of it for you http://www.nature-photos.biz/dodgy.htm - look at the spelling of the word signature - I'm not sure microsoft would spell it "signeture".
I'll try and leave it untouched until I hear from you.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks for the feedback Matt, that infected hosts files was causing issues, no doubt about it. What I am concerned about is the fact that Fixwareout was supposted to reset the hosts file:
from the Fixwareout report:
Hosts file was reset, If you use a custom hosts file please replace it...
You need to leave word wrap off in notepad, I can not scan last HijackThis log you posted, please post it again.
Let's run a Kapershy Online Scan:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.

I share your concern. I just ran a security check using Norton Internet Security, and the result returned was "The IP addresses in your hosts file have been redirected"
As my computer is used for my photography I have 4 large hard drives including back-ups, so the Kaspersky scan will take several hours, I will have to leave it to scan overnight and return tomorrow.
In the meantime here's the hjt log without word wrap.

If you want a look at your hosts file:
To view the Hosts file:
Start -> Run -> Copy the following to the box and hit enter:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
A window opens, choose Notepad from the list and hit OK.
The HJT log looks fine, how is the computer running?

The kaspersky scan looked quite horrifying at first glance, but I'm hoping it's not as bad as it seemed as they're mostly quarantined or in a backup file.
I presume I can just shred the 'Deleted Items211106.dbx' file with Spybot, and delete the Norton quarantined ones, but what about the others?
As for my computer, it's behaving very strangely: I click on internet pages and they load immediately:laugh:, I'm really not used to it being this fast, it's great!

Good morning, not quite sure why, but I can not work well with this Kaspersky Online Scan? (KOS) Note how the numbers are jambed to gether here: Example > Threat name17 <<< no space?
since the log is double spaced, you may have Word Wrap turned on under Format at the top of Notepad. If so, please turn it off for the duration. Let see if I can make sense out of these 43 items.
What you said is correct, get them off you computer, I post them again for you.

Good afternoon Phil,
I think the word wrap thing on the scan report is down to the window in which the report appears after the scan, it can't be enlarged and the line breaks seem to be due to that width restriction. Word wrap was and is off on notepad.
I have shredded all the files, and emptied the recycle bin.
Just for peace of mind I'll run another Kaspersky scan on the C: drive this afternoon and post the results and any observations tomorrow, as you suggest after the machine has had a day to run.

Good evening Phil,
Well the Kaspersky scan was clear yesterday.
However, yesterday evening Norton prevented an attempted port scan on port 5909, from 91.121.107.180 apparently registered in France. I have reported it to the ISP.
Today I noticed that Norton's auto-update was switched off, and reset it. This afternoon Norton detected and quarantined the virus iedefender, and a subsequent scan found and quarantined 3 sources in C:\Windows\sys32.
How should I proceed now?

I would like to look at a fresh HJT log just in case. I removed Antivirus 2009 (rouge malware) from my neighbors PC yesterday, it is related to the junk Norton quarantined. I also get hits on my firewall, but Zone Alarm blocks them without bothering me. If I looked at the log I would probably freak out. I know bots roam the net looking for folks lax in their security.
I believe you should discuss the issues with Norton with tech support. they may want you to reinstall their program?
