Please help me find my browser hijacker. Using google on IE is affected. Using a different search engine in IE, or google in Mozilla Firefox is not affected. S&D finds a few infected items but the problem comes back after reboot.

Here is my HJT logfile. Thanks in advance.

Hi tcarg and welcome :)

First, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files
How to Show Hidden Files
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Click Start.

Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Click Yes to confirm.

Click OK.
.............
Next, go to either of these online file scan sites:

Jotti Malware Scan
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

or here:

Virus Total
http://www.virustotal.com/

Browse to this file to submit for scan:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmlfj.exe

Wait while it finishes scanning. Then copy the report it give and paste the results back here please.

Then I can tell you what steps to take from there.

Hi CalamityJane and thanks for the help.

I went to the Jotti scanner you recommended but even when I showed hidden and system files I was unable to find the file dflmj.exe. I searched the PC and did find a file called DMLFJ.EXE-1AE2E9F2.pf in the C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH directory, so I submitted that to Jotti and attached the report. I think I know what your next question will be so I'm attaching another HJT logfile too. I'm going to reboot and look for DMLFJ.EXE again after that. I'll let you know on that shortly. Thanks.

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

Ok, the file has "morphed" and now has a different random name.
(and the file you did find was a prefetch file, so it's not relevant really)

Do a scan only with Hijackthis and checkmark these items in the list, then press the *fix checked* button:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmrno.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmrno.exe

Scan at Jotti's this file please:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmrno.exe

Copy the report and paste it back here. If found infected, delete that file (but I want to see the report to see what it is id'd as)

Reboot your PC and scan again with Hijackthis and post a fresh log please :)

I think it has morphed again because I again am unable to find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmrno.exe. I did "fix" the other five files you mentioned in HJT and I submitted to Jotti the only other two files in my HJT log that look like randomly named *.exe files (TP4EX.exe and DMPTE.exe). The file TP4EX.exe came back clean (log below). The file DMPTE.exe could not be scanned and Jotti said "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file." I'm holding for further instructions.... in other words I haven't rebooted and rescanned with HJT yet until I get clarification from you. The current HJT log is below. Thank you for your patience.

Alrighty! It just hit me what infection this is - and very difficult to spot. Luckily LonnyRJones has written a tool for removing it. Let's follow these steps next.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

OK, that seems to go as described. I noticed that my homepage is reset to msn.com..... I assume that is OK, and I can change to google if I want now?

Here is the fixwareout log and HJT log. Thanks so much for your help and I'm interested if you have any advice for the future regarding spyware. I have adaware and Spybot S&D, update them regularly, and I tried MS Windows Defender although it always closes with an error at the end of a scan. I also have the latest Norton AV with autoprotect on, but I still got infected.

I have Mozilla Firefox but I don't really use it. Somebody told me it is less susceptible to infection because malware guys don't target it as much as IE. Any advice?

Also if I want to read more about what I had, is there somewhere you suggest that I can do that..... what is it called anyway?

Thanks again.
TCarg

Ok, I believe that got it. You HJT log looks good anyway.

Yes, you can reset your homepage. The tool just sets it to something "safe" for now, so you can choose whatever you want for your home page.

What you had is a rogue unsolicited software program of which there are many different variants. It began last year with a product called "Wareout" stealth installing on unsuspecting users. There have since been numerous others, also UnspyPC, Smitfraud. I can give you this reference (since taken down but still in Google's cache) of a writeup done on this in general by Spyware Researcher Andrew Clover:
http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:bhA3MsncY90J:doxdesk.com/parasite/WareOut.html+wareout&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=16

It's hard to tell exactly which one you had but Lonny's tool is geared to address numerous variants he has found.

Ok, here's your wrap up and additional prevention advice as requested :)

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

"So, how did I get infected in the first place?" (by Tony Klein)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/iesecxp.mspx

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
