First, Thank you Tashi for your help so far.
I initially got the problem with Alfacleaner a few days ago. I ran Norton Anti virus which found three items but was only able to remove one of them. I've done so much since I don't remember what they were. On advice of a more techi-minded friend I downloaded Spybot and Ad-Adware Personal SE. I ran these programs which seeemed to clear up lots of stuff including Alfacleaner, but I was still left with my desk top hijacked. I think I messed up next, I downloaded and ran Hijack This, and think I may have deleted something (sorry!). I now have a White desktop and still can't get any of the settings in the Display function to appear. Today I followed forum advice and ran a Panda scan which found 14 Spyware, 4 Hacking Tools and 1 Dailer. I also ran Spybot again which found and fixed a fault on Active.Desktop. I've run another Hijack This. Both Hijack log files are bellow:

Hi

I've no idea what you deleted from your hijackthis log, and there is no way to find out, because hijackthis is not in a permanent folder and will not have made any backups...

Your doesn't look bad now, but looks to show at least 1 trojan..

I'm not going to ask you to remove it untill you have hijackthis in a permanent folder though (for your own safety)

First put hijackthis into a permanent folder... here's how :-

PLease do this first - go to C: and create a new permanent folder (call it hijackthis) ...Then put (or download - choose "save" not "run") the hijackthis.exe file in it (You must unzip it if it's zipped)...... so you have C:\hijackthis\hijackthis.exe.....then run hijackthis by clicking this .exe file -that way you will have backups if you accidentally remove the wrong item ( running from a temporary folder it will not be able to create backups ) click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Then post the new log...

For your desktop try this :-

Go to Control Panel > Display > Desktop Tab > Customize Desktop > Web Tab

If you see an entry called "security" ... uncheck it

Any other problems, please post any logs showing the entries in question...

Dear Steam,

Thanks for you response. I have checked in the Display>Desktop>Customize>Web... but do not have an entry called "security" only "Desktop uninstall" with the box checked. I haven't unchecked it.

I've unzipped Hijackthis and run the scan again, as follows:

Hi

Go back and untick "Desktop uninstall"

If it restores your desktop, (it should) then go back again and delete "Desktop uninstall" ...

Disconnect from the internet Close ALL browser windows (including this one) - run hijackthis and tick to fix (check the box next to) the list below.........when all are ticked (checked) click the Fix Checked button at the bottom. :-

Dear Steam,

You're a star and currently my favorite person on the planet!

Have done everything you said. I didn't have the C:\WINDOWS\qfojin.exe...file.

When I first rebooted and tried to run stuff it went a bit goofy, making beeps and bongs, but have rebooted again and all is running well.

Thank you and Thank you again. It's very reassuring to know there are people happy to help us muppets out!
